Yuki Tabata: Black Clover’s Yami Is Inspired By My Mentor Who Was “Nice to me”

Black Clover has a number of impressive characters and amongst them, Yami definitely stands out. Yuki Tabata created him with love and care. As a result, the Black Bull’s captain is one of the kindest yet most powerful characters in the entire series.

Fans love Yami due to the hilarious situations that he often has to face. He loves the Black Bulls and considers all of them family. He is a great character in general, and his earnestness is bewitching. But did Black Clover fans know that the character was actually inspired by a real person?

In June 2018, Yuki Tabata was interviewed by Kaze, the French publisher of Black Clover. In the interview, Tabata commented that the creation of Yami was actually inspired by an author that he had worked with as an assistant. He also commented that the mentor was actually nice to him.

In this particular interview, Tabata referred to Toshiaki Iwashiro, the author of Psyren, Mieru Hito, and many other one-shot manga. Yuki Tabata had been an assistant to Iwashiro during the serialization of Psyren. In fact, Naoya Matsumoto (author of Kaiju No. 8) and Ryuhei Tamura (author of Beelzebub) were also mentored by Iwashiro.

While Psyren itself wasn’t the biggest success, all of Iwashiro’s students went on to become huge hits in the manga industry. In fact, Yuki Tabata is the youngest of the bunch. Yuto Tsukada, the mangaka of Food Wars, was also an assistant in Psyren.

Once Yami’s character is properly observed, it’s easy to see that he is one of the best mentors. His team entirely consists of oddballs who have been handpicked by him. Yami is the bona fide leader of the Black Bulls, and his squadmates respect and adore him. Afterall, he has changed the lives and purposes of most of them.

In a way, it is similar to Toshiaki Iwashiro, who was kind to Yuki Tabata as well as all of his other students/assistants. His students went on to become big names in the manga industry, just like how Yami created some of the most powerful magic knights out of a bunch of weirdos.

Additionally, fans love Yami because of his quirkiness. He is hot-tempered but quick to forgive. He supports his teammates and never leaves anyone out. In the end, Yami deserves some much-needed time to poop alone in peace, but none of the Black Bull members are ready to stop pranking him.

Black Clover manga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
