Ne Zha made headlines back in 2019 for its box office success. It stands as one of the highest-grossing Chinese animated films where adventure and fantasy are blended seamlessly. The visuals and the music make it splendid, but its sequel took it to a whole new level.

It surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the fifth highest grossing film, which is a big feat. From critics to fans, people have praised its animation and conception, which only means one thing. The Chinese animation industry is setting itself apart, and these three films are a proof of that.
1. The Legend of Hei
Isn’t it refreshing to see a shift and change in perspective, especially with black cats? From Flow to Kiki’s delivery Service, films have black cats as mascots. The Legend of Hei is no different, especially with how it brings in folk legends and myths.

For newbies, this film would remind them of Ghibli because of similar undertones. Yet, this film renders an impact in its unique way. Hei is a cat spirit who ventures in the human world after his home is destroyed. He meets other spirits who share a common disdain for humankind.
As he meets other spirits, he realizes the truth about humans and their nature. On the whole, the film is a commentary on destruction, greed, and corrupted humanity. But what makes it so good is its interplay of lightheartedness and profundity that balances out the heavy elements.
2. Deep Sea
Deep Sea is a masterpiece that shouldn’t be slept on in any case. It is almost equivalent to living your dream through stellar visuals. It follows the story of Shenxiu who is grappling with her parents’ divorce. It might not be as record-breaking as Ne Zha but it has gravitas and there’s more to it.
As she sets out on a journey into the sea, little does Shenxiu know the secrets it holds. But most of all, the sea encompasses depth and complexities which mirror her emotions well. The animation is superb but the addition of fantastical elements is a cherry on the cake.

The use of iridescent hues within the sea brings out its magnificence in the best way. It is a surreal experience in every aspect, especially with how the sea life is portrayed brilliantly. In all seriousness, this is an aesthetic yet brilliantly done film.
Deep Sea is available for streaming on Peacock.
3. Big Fish and Begonia
Big Fish and Begonia might not be as glorious as Ne Zha but the film is mesmerizing. It would have most viewers glued to their seats in the best way possible. Chun and Kun’s love story is brought to life by Studio Mir’s excellent animation, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

It is a compelling tale of Chun, a dolphin spirit, and Kun, a human boy. The dolphin girl is saved by the boy who eventually drowns during the storm. As a result, Chun must fight all odds to save him. It isn’t the highest grossing film like Ne Zha but it stands out nonetheless.
There’s loyalty, compassion, persistence and resolve, which makes it more gripping. And we all know by now that it isn’t merely animation that makes a story great. The voice cast, music, as well as the setting, is top-tier, which makes it a prime cut.
Big Fish and Begonia is available for streaming on Netflix.
