In a parliamentary session on Thursday, March 1, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin made a bold revelation regarding the fate of Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare.
“Yesterday, we heard of the sacking of IGP Dampare. We heard that the President has sacked him, and in his place, COP Yonu is taking over,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He further criticized the government’s official communication on the matter, highlighting the lack of appreciation for Dampare’s service.
“In the statement from the government spokesperson and the minister in charge of government communication, there was no gratitude expressed.
“The statement issued was to the effect that the President has made a new appointment. So, the IGP Dampare was sacked yesterday, and there’s going to be a swearing-in tomorrow,” he added.
Shifting attention to security concerns around the presidency, Afenyo-Markin lamented the poor lighting situation on the roads leading to the Jubilee House.
“On the road leading to the Jubilee House, we know that the Minister for Greater Accra promised us that the streetlights would be on.
“Mr. Speaker, it’s not good for the security of the presidency if the entire route leading to the Office of the President is so dark. This is in the heart of the city, and it is worrying,” he stated.
He then called on the government to address the situation urgently, urging the Leader of Government Business to involve the Greater Accra Minister in providing a solution.
“I would plead that the Leader of Government Business programs the Minister for Greater Accra to come and assure us of the steps she is taking to address the situation.
“We need sufficient streetlights in the city, particularly in the area where the seat of government is located,” he concluded.
