It’s understood four police cars were at the scene, though the force has not confirmed if any arrests have been made.

One parent told the BBC his son’s Year 13 class hid under tables for half an hour as offices attended.

Bilborough College said in a statement: “Police arrived rapidly on the scene and, after a thorough search of the building, gave us the all-clear.

“We must commend students on the way that they went into lockdown processes which are familiar to them thanks to regular and recent drills.”

Nottingham University Samworth Academy added: “As a precautionary measure, the college and academy initiated a brief lockdown procedure to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” its statement said.

“We are pleased to report that no students or staff were in any danger during this incident.”

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson told The Sun “no knife seen or reported” and the incident is now closed.
