Two charged over pyrotechnics offences as powderkeg derby clash sees ultras throw flare onto artificial surface

BOTH clubs in the lead-up to last night’s Fife derby called upon their ultras groups NOT to take pyrotechnics into the match.

But their appeals fell on deaf ears last night after cops confirmed that two teenage fans were arrested in connection with possession of fireworks as Dunfermline visited Raith Rovers in a crunch Championship clash.

BBC Scotland viewers noticed that a black flare was thrown onto the artificial surface at Stark’s Park as the teams came out before kick off.

A red smoke bomb was also visible in pictures in the away end, as was a blue flare in the home end.

Police were out in force on the night stopping and searching fans in an attempt to prevent fireworks being taken into the venue.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Two males, aged 14 and 15, were charged in connection with possession of pyrotechnics.

“A report will be submitted to the relevant authorities.”

BBC commentator Alasdair Lamont said at kick off: “There’s pyro going on at either ends.

“I notice both clubs had issued pleas for their supporters not to bring them in and that’s fallen on deaf ears to some extent.

“But I’m pleased to say it hasn’t stopped us getting the game under way.”

Goals from on-loan Hearts man Finlay Pollock and veteran ex Hibs star Paul Hanlon took the game away from Dunfermline.

Raith sit fifth in the table with Dunfermline still languishing in ninth and at risk of a relegation play-off spot.
