Three cash-saving ideas to slash the cost of commuting to the office

MORE companies are calling employees back to work at the office.

If you’ve got used to commuting from the bedroom to your desk downstairs, heading out of the house for your nine to five may come as a shock to your bank balance.

Here’s how to save . . .

CARPOOLING: If you drive to work, try finding a colleague who lives near you to buddy up with and take it in turns in each other’s cars.

Or you can find people going to and from similar destinations through carpool site Liftshare.

You can join for free and the site will match you with other members, plus recommend a contribution towards fuel from passengers to drivers.

CHEAP EATS: Takeaway lunches can easily add up to £10 a day or £50 a week.

Taking in your own food keeps costs low. However, you’ll need to be organised. Make a sandwich the night before to take with you in the morning.

Even better, batch cook your favourite recipe on Sunday night and split it into five portions for each weekday.

You can freeze some of the servings for later in the week.

For example, a chicken pasta salad works out at £1.36 a meal based on an online recipe from Tesco Realfood.

TRACK SAVINGS: If you take the train to work every day, getting a season ticket will cut journey costs. Check with your employer if you can get an interest-free loan through salary sacrifice to pay for the ticket. This means you can spread the cost.

A season ticket may not make financial sense if you are only going in a couple of days a week. However, you can get a little back if you earn cashback on spending.

Chase Bank offers customers one per cent back on travel spending through its debit card for the first 12 months, up to £15 a month — that’s up to £180 a year.
