“They call me King, baby!”: Giancarlo Esposito Was Madly in Love With His Original Captain America 4 Role That Was Way Different Than Sidewinder

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe was standing at a precipice, Captain America: Brave New World pulled out a stellar performance at the Box Office to level things up.

Anthony Mackie’s first MCU movie as the protagonist had managed to deliver the goods. It couldn’t have come at a better time for the franchise, which was facing questions regarding its very relevance. And Giancarlo Esposito had a huge role in the movie’s success.

While Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford will walk away with the honors for making Captain America: Brave New World the success it turned out to be, Giancarlo Esposito‘s contribution can not be sidelined.

Essaying the role of Seth Volker AKA Sidewinder, a comic book villain who, as the leader of the Serpent Society, has always been a menacing presence for Earth’s mightiest heroes, the Breaking Bad star left no stone unturned.

With Sidewinder playing a big hand in the events that unfolded in the movie, it doesn’t come as a shock that Giancarlo Esposito is upbeat about his chances of donning the hat going forward. The Megalopolis star has already told fans,

You’re going to see a complicated, very interesting character who gets a chance to have legs over a period of time. (Binged)

That isn’t the only thing on his mind though. Turns out, the 66-year-old was originally roped in to do something else entirely – a role he actually loved.

Giancarlo Esposito revealed that producer Nate Moore had originally told him to essay the role of Klaus Voorhees’ alter ego, King Cobra, a move he was more than excited about. He said,

If I’m walking around the neighborhood, African-Americans go, ‘What’s up, King?’ I love it. They call me King, baby! I mean, that’s the highest honor. (Collider)

As it turned out, fate had other plans in store for him. While Esposito couldn’t be more excited about portraying King Cobra, the creative heads behind Captain America: Brave New World had other plans. They thought he would be better suited to play the role of another ‘King’. He said,

But as it turned out, there [are other Kings] in the Marvel world, and this was connected to the Serpent Society — they were going back to the comics and trying to figure it out, and Nate said, ‘We can give you all the characteristics of King, but we think he should be Sidewinder.’

He continued,

And they spoke about creating a character that was really grounded, in a mercenary fashion. They wanted to ground the movie when they went back in to do some additional shooting, and their focus now was on this additional character. So it was a bit of a whirlwind for me. I focused myself and I went in there and knocked it out. (…) And I’m hoping to be in this universe a little longer.

Giancarlo Esposito wouldn’t have any problem with how things turned out to be, as Captain America: Brave New World has made its way to $389 million globally.
