“There was not a desire to go back and touch existing content”: Real Reason Fallout 76 Ghoul Update Wouldn’t Dare Change the Original Storyline

Fallout 76 has clearly seen bad days during the time of its launch. The game, made by Bethesda Game Studios, was considered the worst-released video game back in the ye old days of 2018. But after the Wastelanders expansion pack, the game received a fairly good reception, and according to critics, it actually felt like a Fallout game after the expansion.

Now Bethesda is releasing a new game mechanic in their twentieth season where players can play as the radiated and ugly-looking mutated humans known as the Ghouls. Let’s delve deeper into this and see how it affects the whole game.

Fallout 76’s new update is going to be a game changer

The Fallout franchise has been forever Bethesda’s strongest suit in the gaming industry and Fallout 76 is the magnum opus of the series. The initial release of the game was an absolute disaster, the game was buggy, empty and was missing the key Fallout element in the game. Although the title was met with a rocky start, the game started to gain popularity after various updates and a very successful TV series.

In the upcoming season of Fallout, which is appropriately named ‘Glow of the Ghoul’, Bethesda is introducing a new feature where players can turn their own characters into Ghouls from the game. Ghouls are humans in the game who have been exposed to radiation for too long and instead of dying they just muted into this semi-immortal beings who have much more survivability.

This idea of turning humans into Ghouls is not new, and has been in the minds of developers for a long time. In a recent interview between Wccftech, Creative Director, Jon Rush and Senior Producer, Bill Lacoste, they emphasized the fact that players always had the desire to play as Ghouls in the series. Rush also added how the developers don’t want to change aspects of the original story and instead want to build upon what’s already out there.

For existing content, no, there was not a desire to go back and touch existing content. For future content, absolutely. Ghouls will be taken into consideration for current content. What’s going to be taken into consideration is also how the different factions react to Ghouls. If you’re a Ghoul and you go to Fort Atlas and visit the Brotherhood of Steel, it’s not going to be a very warm welcome.

Lacoste also added how the popularity of the Ghoul in Fallout 76 was what inspired the developers to make this update where players can turn into one.

Bethesda is content to look into the future rather than the past

The Glow of the Ghoul season will begin on March 18th and will introduce a lot of new perks and rewards. To actually play as a Ghoul though, players need to first reach level 50 after which they need to complete a sequence of quests. After completing the quests, they will be able to turn their character into a ghoul. This also grants Ghoul specific perks with two new legendary perk and twenty-eight normal ones.

With this new update, Bethesda is not only adding a much requested feature into the game, but also deepening the lore of the Ghouls in the game and doing all this while maintaining the original Fallout identity. According to Rush they are certain about making more content based on Ghouls, instead of changing the original story.

While it remains to be seen how this unfolds and whether it will be detrimental to the overall franchise or not, one thing we are absolutely sure of is that Fallout 76 has come a long way since its initial troubled launch and the future of the game is looking brighter than ever.
