“The show really kind of helped that grow”: Fallout 76 Would’ve Never Included Its Latest Feature if Not for the Walton Goggins Series

Fallout is a franchise that’s known for its incredible single-player experience. So, when Bethesda revealed Fallout 76, the first multiplayer entry in the series, gamers were unhappy. All of their worst fears came true with the release of the game, as it was a half-baked product that lacked what made Fallout games special.

However, Bethesda didn’t give up. Over the years, Todd Howard and his team have brought a number of updates and fixes to Fallout 76. This has allowed the game to reach new heights and find itself a loyal player base. However, one of the brand-new additions in the game wouldn’t have made it out of development hell if it wasn’t for Amazon Prime’s Fallout TV show.

After months of anticipation, Fallout 76 players can now choose to transform into an irradiated Ghoul with the brand-new “Way of the Ghoul” update that launched on March 18th, 2025. Bethesda gave us our first look into the feature all the way back in June 2024, and gamers have been excited.

While chatting with WCCFTech, Fallout 76‘s Creative Director Jon Rush and Senior Producer Bill Lacoste opened up about the latest update and what Bethesda is planning for the future of the game. When asked if the idea of adding Ghouls into the game came before or after the release of Amazon Prime’s Fallout TV show, here’s what Lacoste had to say.

It just so happened that the show really kind of helped that grow. The popularity of The Ghoul made it a much more impressive and also recognizable feature that players wanted to engage in.

Bethesda had always been interested in making Ghouls one of the playable races in Fallout 76. However, it was only last year that they started actively working on the idea. It was all due to the popularity of Walton Goggin’s Ghoul in the Prime Show. Seriously, many consider his character to be the heart and soul of the show.

With the latest update, Bethesda hasn’t given the Fallout 76 player a simple cosmetic reskin. The studio has created a unique gameplay experience with Ghouls. There are 30 unique perks exclusive to top Ghouls, and these directly influence the gameplay and load-outs. It’s great to see that Howard and his team are still committed to the game and continue elevating it.

Fallout 76 desperately needs this one feature

One of the best things about Ghouls as playable characters in Fallout 76 is the unique world and story interactions that are exclusive to them. While we won’t see many of these interactions in existing quests, all the ones that will be added in the future will feature more unique Ghoul interactions.

It’s been seven years since the release of Fallout 76, and the majority of the players have already completed the existing story questlines. There are also several branching questlines in the game that all come down to player choices, so bringing Ghoul interactions alongside these increases the need for a new game-plus feature.

Since we don’t have a new game-plus feature in Fallout 76, the only way for existing players who have already completed the game to get some Ghoul interactions in the quests will be to begin with a new character. However, this will lead to years of loot being left behind.

As the game doesn’t allow players to trade a few items between characters and players, starting a brand-new character just to experience Ghouls will mean leaving behind camp furniture, any learned crafting plans, and legendary loot.

The Ghoul update is likely to appeal to newer players who haven’t started their journey in the game, as they’ll be starting off with a fresh character. However, without a new game plus feature, longtime players might completely avoid this new experience.

With that said, are you enjoying playing as a Ghoul in Fallout 76? Let us know in the comments below.
