Secret menu items, free food and 72p sausage rolls… the insider’s guide to Greggs that could save you £549

WHO doesn’t love a Greggs sausage roll, bacon bap or a hot coffee?

But grabbing your daily drink or sweet treat from the popular bakery soon adds extra pain to your finances.

Did you know there are ways to get food, birthday treats and pastries for free?

Here, we explain how you can cut the cost of your favourite treats and save up to £549 a year at Greggs.

Save with the app

Greggs fans can get their hands on free coffees, pastries and slices of pizza if they download its app.

New users get a reward when they sign up.

Grabbing one of these items for free could save you around £1.70.

The bakery chain will also give you a free sweet treat such as a glazed doughnut, chocolate muffin or Yum Yum on your birthday, which could save you £1.50.

Meanwhile, Greggs often launches offers through its app, so make sure to keep an eye out.

If you regularly visit the bakery then you could also earn freebies through its rewards scheme.

You earn a stamp every time you buy items such as sandwiches, hot bakes, breakfast or sweet treats.

Once you collect nine stamps then your tenth item will be free.

If you bought ten coffees a month then you would save £20.40 over the course of a year.

Keep an eye out for double stamp offers.

The bakery previously offered double stamps to customers who bought an item at Greggs and scanned the app after 5pm on August 10.

Get sausage rolls for 72p

You can grab hot sausage rolls that are fresh from the oven for just 72p with one simple trick.

My tips save me hundreds of pounds a year

GREGGS superfan Tony Collins rarely pays full price for his order.

The meter technician, 64, visits his local Greggs five or six times a week to grab breakfast or lunch.

Tony, from Newcastle, has been picking up steak bakes, baguettes and pasties for decades from his local bakeries.

“All the lasses know me there,” he said. “As soon as I come in, they know what my order is.

“I usually get a breakfast deal, where I get a bacon baguette with brown sauce and a latte.

“Or at dinner time I’ll get the meal deal, which is usually a toasted ham and cheese baguette, a sandwich, a sweet treat and a drink.”

Tony bags treats at a big discount using the Too Good To Go app.

The app lets shoppers pick up a “mystery” bag of goodies for less than their usual sale price.

He previously got three steak bakes, three baguettes, three sausage rolls, two cookies and a couple of doughnuts for £2.95 – saving him around £22.05.

He also saves around £15 a week by visiting his local Greggs outlet.

These shops sell unsold food that is near its sell-by date at a lower price.

Tony also grabs free sweet treats on his birthday and throughout the year using the Greggs app.

He gets rewards for every purchase he makes, which can also turn into free coffees and cakes.

Tony said he saves at least £200 a year using these tips.

Iceland sells packs of eight sausage rolls for just £5.75 – which works out at just 72p per item.

In comparison, buying the same sausage roll from a Greggs cafe would set you back around £1.30 – 58p more than the frozen version.

If you ate one sausage roll a day then you would have bought 46 packs of them over the course of a year, which would set you back £264.50.

But if you bought your sausage roll from a Greggs bakery every day then you would have spent £474.50, or an extra £210.

The tasty treats are exactly the same as the pastries you get in store – for a fraction of the price.

They taste best when baked from frozen, so simply pop them in the oven for just 25 minutes.

Visit an outlet

Another way to save on your pastry fix is to visit an outlet store.

The fast food chain has more than 30 outlets in cities across the UK including Tyne and Wear, Staffordshire and Greater Manchester.

The food is sent to these stores if the chain’s nearby factories have made too many batches, regular shops are unable to sell the stock or the items are misshapen.

The outlet shops offer the same Greggs items you would get in its regular bakeries for up to 75% off.

You can pick up your favourites including sausage rolls and steak bakes for a quarter of the price you would pay at a normal Greggs.

For example, a hot ham and cheese baguette would set you back £4.55 at a regular Greggs.

But you could snap it up for just £1.14 at an outlet – a £3.41 saving.

If you bought one of these baguettes a week from an outlet instead of a regular Greggs then you would save £177.32 over a year.

Check for perks

One of the lesser-known ways to bag free items at Greggs is through its rewards partner schemes.

Mobile and energy companies sometimes give away free baked goods, sausage rolls and coffees to customers who are signed up.

For example, Octopus Energy customers who are signed up to its Octoplus scheme can get a free drink every week.

Meanwhile, Monzo Perks or Max customers can claim a sausage roll, regular sized hot drink, doughnut or muffin from the chain each week.

Greggs secret menu

ALTHOUGH Greggs does not have an official secret menu, the food on offer does vary depending on where you live.

In November the chain announced that it would start trialling two new hot pasta boxes.

The Macaroni Cheese and Meatball Pasta were launched in selected shops across the Northwest.

The initial stores were:

  • Bolton Gate Retail Park
  • Manchester Ashton New Road
  • Rochdale Riverside Walk
  • Manchester Victoria Concourse Kiosk
  • Salford Media City
  • Manchester Piccadilly
  • Blackpool Squires Gate Retail Park
  • Manchester St Mary’s Gate
  • Fulwood Eastway Retail Park
  • Preston Tulketh Mill Retail Park

Prices started from £5.75 and included a hot pasta box and any drink.

The boxes are now available in Bristol, Tyne and Wear, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.

Meanwhile, customers in Glasgow can get their hands on its exclusive Pineapple Cake.

It is made from a sweet pastry shell and is filled with pineapple flavoured jam and a sweetened filling, covered in a vibrant yellow fondant.

Londoners can try its Tottenham Cake, a delicious sponge cake topped with pink fondant icing.

Or Scotts can grab the Haggis Pie, a tasty little snack inspired by Scotland’s most famous dish.

The lightly baked pie shell is filled with haggis, swede and mashed potato.

But it’s only available north of the border.

The North East is also home to two Greggs secret menu items.

The Peach Melba cake dates back to the 1880s and is made from a sweet pastry shell.

It’s filled with pieces of peach in a light syrup and sweetened cream and is finished with a colourful fondant.

There’s also the Stottie, a delicious flat-shaped white loaf covered in a dusting of flour for extra flavour.

If you were to claim your free coffee every week, you would save £104 over the course of a year.

The offer is subject to change at any time, so keep an eye on it to avoid being caught out.

You cannot roll over any unclaimed treats to the next week so make sure you claim them to avoid missing out.

Buy in bulk

You could save money on your favourite slice of pizza by buying in bulk.

Greggs often launches deals such as six slices of pizza for £7.99 – saving you 66p.

You can always keep the extra slices in your fridge to eat the next day.

Another option is to buy your favourite treats as part of a deal.

The bakery chain has an offer where you can get a slice of pizza and a hot or cold drink for £2.85 – saving you 65p.

If you bought just one of these deals a week instead of buying the items separately then you would save around £34.32 a year.

Prices may vary depending on where you live.

Make sure you know the terms of the deal before you reach the counter.

Regular speciality hot drinks cost 50p extra and there may be additional charges for branded soft drinks.

Meanwhile, you may be charged extra if you want to eat in the restaurant.
