There are a lot of protocols that dictate the British royal kids’ lives in order to keep up appearances and keep up the line of succession. And so, we were in total shock to hear about Prince George and Prince Louis’ mutual hobby.
Ahead of the Six Nations rugby match between England and Wales over the weekend, Prince William and Kate Middleton met with injured players and their families. During their chats, the Prince and Princess of Wales — who also share 9-year-old daughter Princess Charlotte — spoke about what weekends usually look like with their sons.

“We go from one competition to the next,” Prince William explained, per Hello! Middleton then added, “Louis is 6 and he’s just started touch rugby and George is 11 and he plays a bit more. They do really enjoy it.”
Prince George and Prince Louis are allowed to play rugby?! Of all sports? The highly physical sport can lead to many injuries, including concussions. We would think there would be a royal protocol preventing the second and fourth in line to the throne from playing such a dangerous sport that has minimal pads and can lead to head injuries.
We know Prince Louis plays soccer (and that Middleton shows up to games!), but we would think the royal kids would be restricted to games like badminton and shuffleboard where all they are risking is a pulled muscle or a bruised ego. Or maybe the boys could take up dance like their sister and their late grandma, Princess Diana.
There are plenty of other rules that are set to protect the line of succession. It is believed that this year —when Prince George turns 12 — he will no longer be allowed to travel with his sister. The morbid rule is set so that if something were to happen to the heir while flying, the first spare would hopefully be … spared. Prince George and Prince William might not be able to fly together either. This means a whole host of planes would have to take the Wales family on any vacations.
The family also can’t eat shellfish for risk of shellfish poisoning. So crabcakes are off the table, but rugby is A-OK? Believe us when we say, we are so happy to hear that Prince George and Prince Louis are allowed to play their beloved game. We’re sure any sense of normalcy and “freedom” from their royal duties is cherished. We just can’t believe that rugby made the cut.
