One Surprising Similarity Between Daredevil: Born Again Star Charlie Cox and Hugh Jackman’s Marvel Journeys

Created by Dario Scardapane, Matt Corman, and Chris Ord, Daredevil: Born Again starring Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, and others is a revival and continuation of Daredevil that premiered on Netflix from 2015 to 2018. The story of the Marvel television show picks up several years after the events of Daredevil and a year later after Matt Murdock stopped his work as the titular character.

Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again is currently airing on Disney+ with four episodes that received positive responses from the audience and critics. Fans waited a long time to see Murdock back as the masked vigilante, and they have not been disappointed.

Season 2 is set to premiere in 2026 with eight episodes. Charlie Cox is not only a fan-favorite actor, but he also shares one common thing with another actor who has been a fan-favorite for a very long time.

Marvel actors Charlie Cox and Hugh Jackman didn’t grow up around comic books

Charlie Cox started playing Matt Murdock/Daredevil in 2015 for Marvel’s Daredevil TV series, which premiered on Netflix. Not only was the actor highly praised for playing a blind lawyer, but he was also given a Helen Keller Achievement Award for his role by the American Foundation for the Blind.

In his interview with A Place To Hang Your Cape in 2015, the actor was asked if he was aware of the comic book character or if it was all new to him, to which he said,

No, this is all very new to me. I now feel like I’ve had a crash course in the last year since I got the job. But I didn’t grow up on comic books at all.

Cox echoed a similar sentiment in speaking at Fan Expo San Francisco 2024 when he was asked if he was interested in playing the comic book character before he was finalized to play in the series. At the time, he said that he ‘didn’t even know about him,’ adding that he had not heard about Daredevil, pointing out that when people spoke to him about it, he said he thought they were talking about a noun.

He explained that he assumed the character was like a rock climber or someone who jumps through fire hoops on a motorcycle. Cox didn’t even like the gore theme of the series, as he mentioned to The Guardian in 2016 that he didn’t feel comfortable with the glorification of violence, but as an actor who has had long periods of unemployment, he had to be lenient with his convictions.

But Charlie Cox is not the only Marvel actor who didn’t know the character he was going to play and establish himself as one of the significant members of the Marvel community. Hugh Jackman, who started playing Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men in 2000, became one of the most successful actors in the industry.

Jackman has been appreciated for his work as Wolverine, and fans couldn’t help but be thrilled when it was announced that he’d be reprising his role as Wolverine for Deadpool & Wolverine. His comeback was welcomed with open arms and heart, and fans loved the movie and his work. But Hugh Jackman, just like Cox, did not grow up on comic books. He said in an interview with JCR Comic Arts,

I don’t think I understood what it meant to the wider world. I wasn’t a big comic book fan, in particular, growing up. I had never heard of X-Men. In some ways, I am really glad I didn’t know. Because I really approached Logan as I would any other character. Yes, he had claws coming out of him, and yes, he could heal himself; yeah, he had crazy hair. But for me, it’s just another character to embody with all the human-ness of him.

Talking about reprising his role for Deadpool & Wolverine, Jackman said that the experience of working on the movie exceeded anything he had done before as Wolverine, and he had been playing the character for 25 years. He added that he loved playing the character, and it showed on-screen.

Daredevil: Born Again Episode 4 reunites Daredevil & The Punisher

Season one of Daredevil: Born Again is in full swing, and episode 4 seemed like the one fans had been waiting for as it reunites Matt Murdock with Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher. Fans were thrilled to have Jon Bernthal back on-screen and even though he was back for a few minutes, the actor made sure that his character left a lasting impression on people.

The actor, in speaking to EW, shared,

What I really appreciate about these guys [Marvel] is that they have their vision. They have an idea of where they want him to go and the world in which they want him to exist. But they’re really giving me agency on how we get him there and making sure that it’s honest, authentic, and truthful.

The Walking Dead actor noted during the interview that Daredevil: Born Again has given his character a chance to open up, which is getting closer to the Frank Castle he really wants to portray. Charlie Cox, in his British GQ interview, credited the role and the character for saving his career, as he said,

My career had been chugging along OK. I had this quite big moment early on where I’d been the lead of a film, Stardust, and then the years after that had been barren. Then there had been a rebuilding, and that had been a very humbling experience.

The actor shared that he was called in for Foggy Nelson’s part, but he was adamant that he’d only read for the lead, and things worked out for him, and he landed the role.
