Government’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the previous government nearly collapsed the District Assemblies in Ghana.
According to him, the government created agencies that were doing the same work as the various district assemblies and allocated funding to them while the district assemblies were struggling.
This decision, he said, almost collapsed the district assemblies in the country because they did not have a dime in their coffers.
Additionally, he said it put a serious toll on members of Parliament who had to sponsor virtually everything that their assemblies had to do.
However, the current government has scrapped these agencies and will revert the money to the district assemblies through the common fund.

“The District Assembly Common Fund and I am an MP and this will be music to the ears of all MPs. What has happened is that at least in the last eight years, the district assemblies have been dismembered. They have been left on their own. Hardly any funds went to them and in their stead all manner of amorphous duplications have been put in place. Like the Coastal Development Authority to do the same things District Assemblies do,” he stated on Accra-based Gh One TV.
He continued “For political reasons, money is rather allocated to these agencies, which are packed with political cronies to the detriment of the District Assemblies, so President Mahama says the Castal Development Authority and the Middlebelt Development Authority are all scrapped. So monies will now revert to the district assemblies and it Ghc 7.51 billion. The reason that is important for the assemblies through the common fund, it relieves people like myself who is an MP of the pressure because the Assembly doesn’t have any money. In the last few months I’ve had to finance virtually every activity of the district assembly and its various units because there is not a dime in their coffers. The NPP government nearly collapsed the district assembly”.
