“My speaking voice is kind of my fake voice”: Kratos is Christopher Judge’s Real Voice, He Changed it Because His Agent Said it’s Too Terrifying

Christopher Judge’s performance as Kratos in all recent God of War games has undoubtedly earned him widespread critical acclaim, with Judge grabbing the Game Award for Best Performance back in 2022.

We’ve seen Judge in a number of movies, TV, and video games for decades now. His natural voice is so unique that it’s a major part of everything he’s appeared in. However, at some point, Judge’s voice became a major hurdle in his career, as his agent said it scared everyone!

Christopher Judge’s Kratos Voice Scared Everyone

While chatting with Michael Rosenbaum on the Inside of You Podcast, Kratos’ voice, Christopher Judge, opened up about his struggles in the past and how he’s managed to overcome them and establish himself as the real deal in the industry.

Judge also revealed the efforts that go into making the God of War games, as the actors have to do all the cinematics and then voice the characters for the entire game. The actor later states that his speaking voice is the same as his fake voice of Kratos.

One of Judge’s old agents told him that his Kratos voice is so deep that people are outright afraid of him on sets because they don’t know that he isn’t faking his voice. Due to this, Judge raised his normal speaking voice and made it sound less scary by mumbling.

The fact that Judge’s real voice is the same as Kratos’ in-game voice means he doesn’t have to act out or go out of his way to portray the character in the games. That’s exactly what makes him an incredible voice-actor and a fan-favorite. Let’s hope we continue to see him in future franchise entries.

Kratos Almost Became British in God of War (2018)

As we’ve said before, Judge’s take on Kratos in the franchise is one of the best performances in the modern gaming generation. However, originally, Kratos was going to sound very different.

In an interview, Judge revealed that he went through vocal training for months before he could start working with Sony Santa Monica with a British accent.

Our first day on set we’re doing our first take and you see people whispering and talking then Corey walks over to me and he says ‘was that a British accent?’

Judge himself admitted that his accent wasn’t that great and later switched to his natural American accent. He also opened up about the motion capture process, which brought the world of God of War to our screens, and how it was different from his previous adventures in the industry.

Considering that TC Carson voiced the Kratos with an American accent in the first God of War series, it wouldn’t have made sense for Judge to go with a British one for a game that’s based around a Norse setting.

Still, the idea of the warrior talking in an English tone would’ve been quite interesting if the development team had allowed Judge to do it.

With that said, would you like to see Judge return for future God of War games? Let us know in the comments below.
