Mahama’s use of brother’s private jet for Sierra Leone visit sparks renewed criticism

President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Sierra Leone on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, for a one-day working visit as part of his ‘Good Neighbourliness Tour.’

However, his decision to travel aboard a private jet owned by his brother, businessman Ibrahim Mahama, has sparked renewed criticism from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NPP argues that Mahama’s reliance on his brother’s aircraft raises concerns about accountability and transparency, questioning whether it aligns with his commitment to prudent public resource management.

The opposition has long accused Mahama of blurring the lines between personal and state affairs, and his latest travel choice has only fueled the debate.

In response, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the president’s spokesperson, defended the move, clarifying that no taxpayer funds were used.

He explained that the arrangement was temporary, pending an official review of the presidential jet’s condition.

Kwakye Ofosu also pointed out that Mahama had previously used his brother’s Dzata jet while in opposition without controversy.

Security analyst Anthony Acquaye has also weighed in, asserting that the president’s decision was based on security considerations rather than luxury, emphasizing the need to ensure Mahama’s safety during international engagements.

Despite these explanations, the NPP insists that the move reflects a disregard for public perception and responsible governance.
