Large crowds expected at funeral of lollipop man, 60s, who was mowed down by runaway car with brother in Letterkenny

A DONEGAL man who was killed by a runaway car is to be buried on Thursday as his brother continues to fight for his life in hospital.

Anthony and Martin Gallagher, who were both in their 60s, were mowed down as they walked home from a night out in Letterkenny in the early hours of St Patrick’s Day.

Anthony, who worked as a ‘lollipop man’ just 50-yards from the scene of the tragedy, died in hospital from his injuries a few hours later.

Martin continues to fight for his life in Galway University Hospital having suffered life-changing injuries.

The incident occurred at the town’s Lower Main Street just before 3am, less than 100 metres from the home the men shared together at Charlie Daly Terrace.

A teenager suspected of driving a taxi which hit the two men just before 3am was arrested a short time afterwards.

He has since been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP and the Garda Youth Diversion Programme.

A Garda spokesperson said their investigations into the incident continue.

Mr Gallagher’s remains will repose in the Eternal Light Chapel of Rest, Mountain Top in Letterkenny tomorrow evening from 6pm until 9pm.

His funeral mass will take place in St Eunan’s Cathedral on Thursday morning at 11am followed by interment in Conwal Cemetery.

Mr Gallagher is predeceased by his mother Brigid and aunt Rosaleen.

He is survived by his brother Martin, cousin Kevin and his wife Dolores and also leaves behind his extended family, neighbours and many friends.

A vigil held in Letterkenny last night to pray for the two much-loved brothers was attended by up to 200 people.

The vigil heard how both men kept themselves to themselves but were respected and honoured by the people of the town.

A large crowd is expected at Mr Gallagher’s funeral.
