When your parents are Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney, it’s no wonder you’d be obsessed with their show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and that’s exactly what it’s like for their teen and tween sons. Along with that, their sons are garnering their raunchy sense of humor!
Earlier this week, on the episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Olson talked about their sons watching It’s Always Sunny. “My son, my 14-year-old, is…we’ve tried to keep both of them away from Sunny,” she said. “I had both of them while we were shooting the show. That’s how long it’s been. And we can’t keep it from him anymore.”
She then joked that she and McElhenney accidentally gave them “horrifically inappropriate” senses of humor.
“Listen, they’re both very funny. But at this age, the sense of humor they’ve adapted from us is just so horrifically inappropriate,” she joked. “We’re like, ‘Ooo! You’re so close! Like in a few years, you’re going to fine-tune that and be so funny, but you can’t say that at school.’”
She added, “It’s really, it’s such a fine line. I mean, they make us laugh, but it’s a fine line. I talked to my therapist about it, and she was like, ‘Okay, you can laugh, but what you need to say is, ‘Now, I think that’s funny, but let’s imagine you’re out in the real world. People don’t understand who you are. They might think you’re a rapist or a murderer.’”
We’ve always wondered what having two comedian parents would be like, and now we have the answer: they adopt their sense of humor!

For those who don’t know, the High Potential star and McElhenney secretly started dating during the second season of It’s Always Sunny, later marrying in Sept 2008. They’ve welcomed two children named Axel Lee, born in Sept 2010, and Leo Grey, born in April 2012.
In a previous interview with Fatherly, Olson also talked about how respectful their two sons really are. “He’s got two parents that model it constantly and we’re not doing it on purpose. I just have two great kids. We talk a lot about consent and respect and leaving a place better than you found it,” she said. “They’re at the point now where they’re like, ‘We get it, mom.’ I don’t know that it’s much more than making sure that you live your life in a way that you’re proud of, because your kids are always watching. They’re polite and respectful.”
