John Cena is Absolutely Right- 5 WWE Matches That Explain Why John Cena Turned Heel

John Cena sent shockwaves across the wrestling business when he turned heel at the 2025 WWE Elimination Chamber PLE. He launched a beatdown on Cody Rhodes and aligned himself with The Final Boss, The Rock, selling out in the process. After weeks of waiting for answers, Cena finally arrived on RAW to deliver it.

The 16-time WWE Champion came to RAW on March 17th, 2025, taking place in Brussels, Belgium. He launched a verbal barrage on the fans for treating him badly and like a puppet for the last 25 years. Every time Cena tried to give them his best, they showered hate on him. At the end of his promo, Cena claimed that he had ended his relationship with them and no longer cared about any Cenation fan.

John Cena venting out his anger is justifiable to a huge extent. There had been many years that Cena, being the babyface was met with nothing but hate from fans. This originated when Cena began his rise to the top. In fact, the hate was evident in many of those marquee matches with these five being prime examples of fans’ abusive treatment of The Cenation Leader.

5. Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio tasted his first WWE Championship success in 2011. He won the vacated title, defeating The Miz in a tournament to crown a new champion after John Cena lost the title to CM Punk, who walked out of WWE with it.

John Cena decided to challenge Mysterio on the same night for the WWE title. Rey was exhausted from already competing once that night, but put up a valiant fight Cena. Despite that, he lost the title to him which garnered loud boos for Cena, possibly for inserting himself in a championship bout when Mysterio was not a 100%.

4. Triple H

The same man who decided to turn John Cena heel, Triple H, became a reason for fans berating Cena during their high-stakes WrestleMania 22 bout. Despite being the heel, Triple H was widely cheered and Cena was loudly booed. Even Cena defeating The Game after a great match did not do him any favors and fans showered much hate towards him that night.

3. Rob Van Dam

One of the prime examples of the fans showering hate on John Cena was when he entered enemy territory for a match. This came when Mr. Money in the Bank winner decided to cash in his opportunity at the 2006 ECW One Night Stand event, where the environment and rules worked in his favor.

As soon as John Cena entered the Hammerstein Ballroom, he was met with one of the loudest jeers ever in his young career. Fans even threw back Cena’s t-shirt when he tossed it towards them. They continuously heckled Cena throughout the match and it turned out to be one of the worst nights of his entire career.

2. CM Punk

CM Punk is considered one of the biggest WWE rivals of John Cena. They battled on multiple occasions, but at the 2011 Money in the Bank PLE, fans were firmly in the corner of Punk as it took place in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, another enemy territory for Cena.

John Cena, much like at ECW One Night Stand, was showered with massive heat, even when he tried to stop Vince McMahon from screwing Punk. This led to Punk, who called him and The Rock bald frauds a few weeks ago on RAW, defeating Cena and walking out of the company with the WWE title.

1. The Rock

The dream feud between two of the generational faces of WWE, The Rock, and John Cena, was upon the WWE Universe in 2012. However, it was clear that the fans had sided with The Rock and booed John Cena on every occasion. It was the same time that Cena debuted the ‘Rise Above Hate’ t-shirt to not give in to the hate of the audience.

Moreover, even in their match at WrestleMania 28 which took place in The Rock’s hometown of Miami, Florida, Cena was showered with loud jeers as fans chanted for The Rock who emerged victorious.
