Scarlett Johansson has often been the target of Michael Che’s Weekend Update jokes, which he makes Colin Jost read aloud. During the most recent Christmas episode, Johansson was present when Jost read one of Che’s jokes about her. And she was genuinely shocked at the vulgarity of the joke—though she took it in stride.

Jokes about Johansson have become a recurring highlight bit of the Weekend Update joke swaps, never failing to entertain the audience. Jost and Johansson have been together since 2017 when the two met on the sets of SNL. They got married in October 2020 and had their son Cosmo in August 2021.
Scarlett Johansson opens up about Colin Jost’s dirty joke on SNL

Scarlett Johansson‘s shock at the vulgar joke made at her expense during the Christmas episode of SNL was completely genuine. She had no idea that Colin Jost was about to read a joke about her private parts, something that Michael Che had come up with.
It was the end-of-the-year joke swap and Che had Jost deliver the explicit line: “Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu. But I ain’t trippin’. I’ve been eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.” It didn’t take much to realize the joke was a crude reference to Johansson’s private parts.
However, the most hilarious moment came when the camera cut to the Black Widow actress, who stood there, jaw dropped in shock. She opened up about the viral moment during a chat with InStyle Magazine. She didn’t hold back her words when she shared about the “insane” experience. Johansson shared:
It was so vulgar. I just can’t believe that they went there. I was like—it was so gross. It was really gross. And, like, old-school gross.
Johansson shared that she was given a sort of heads-up about the joke before the segment. She was told that Che had written a “vagina joke” about her. She didn’t think much of it until she saw the Costco photo of a roast beef. She shared, “I was like, ‘I mean, it’s a vagina joke, how bad could it be?’ And then as soon as the Costco photo came up, I was like, ‘No! No, Michael!’”
She went on to describe the moment the camera panned to her, calling it “a full To Catch a Predator-style reveal”. She shared that it was so intense, with the sudden burst of lights and a cameraman closing in with a video camera to catch her reaction. She spent the entire day at the 30 Rock studios and admitted that she felt like she might faint at that moment.
Johansson and Jost had a laugh about it later that night. She shared, “I was like, ‘My nerves are shot.’ And Colin said, ‘Me too.’” Jost also addressed the joke when he appeared on The Tonight Show.
Colin Jost was completely blindsided by the joke unlike Scarlett Johansson

When Colin Jost appeared on The Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon asked him whether he got in trouble with Scarlett Johansson for the SNL Weekend Update joke. He replied, “I’m in trouble, I think, with a lot of people.” He further shared that Johansson was so shocked at the joke.
Jost further shared that he was completely surprised, unlike Johansson, who was given a heads-up from the producers. He shared, “Because I was obviously surprised by everything, but they gave her a heads-up.” He shared that he didn’t know where the joke was going and only when the graphic came up for Arby’s that he realized it.
Fallon called it a “honestly legitimate live moment” while Jost shared that his reactions weren’t acting at all.
