Fans were excited to get reintroduced to Kelsey Grammer as Frasier in the show’s reboot in 2023, but the new-age series didn’t take off as expected. Months after season 2 debuted in September 2024, viewers were expecting updates about season 3 – but didn’t hold their breath in case Frasier was canceled.
Closer shares the fate of the revival and more exclusive details after two seasons.
Is the ‘Frasier’ Reboot Canceled?
The Frasier revival was canceled from Paramount+ after two seasons, multiple outlets reported in January 2025, but it may not be the end for good as CBS Studios is claimed to be scouting for a new home for the series.
Two months after that announcement, a source exclusively gave Closer insight into the troubles keeping the reboot alive.
“Kelsey made a very rich deal for this Frasier reboot and was picky and selective about the behind-the-camera talent as well,” the insider explained in a story published on March 17, 2025. “The show turned out nicely and did fine with critics, but nobody was doing this for cheap and the individual episodes cost a lot — too much in my opinion.”
The insider explained that sitcoms are structured to be “cost-effective” by “using the same sets and the same actors week in and week out.” However, the series wasn’t geared that way as “Kelsey’s fee was up there, in the $2 million per episode range, and a lot of people need to get paid on a Frasier project because of its longstanding roots as a Cheers spinoff.”
That said, the source urged fans not to lose hope because CBS Studios and Frasier producers “are shopping the show around, and maybe a deep pocketed buyer will step up, but Kelsey has nobody to blame for the big price tag of this show but himself. And that was the reason the show has been canceled: it cost way too much!”
Kelsey Grammer Reacts to ‘Frasier’ Reboot Cancellation
The Cheers alum opened up about the Frasier reboot bowing out after two seasons, he believed that Paramount+ wasn’t the right fit as the show’s home base.
“There’s a better home for it. I mean, obviously, they didn’t really promote or spend much time on it,” Kelsey told The New York Post on March 6, 2025. “The fellow that worked at Paramount+ when we first sold the show there left, and so it sort of fell into their laps, the next administration, without having any real conscience and what to do with it. So I think they gave it sort of a good try, but they weren’t particularly passionate about the project. We’ll end up somewhere where people are passionate about it. Listen, it’s got a huge audience, a big following, and if people know where to find it, I think they will.”
Which ‘Frasier’ Cast Members Returned for the Reboot?
The Frasier reboot was about Frasier’s journey to reconnecting with his son, Freddy, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott.
Bebe Neuwirth returned as Frasier’s ex-wife Lilith, while Peri Gilpin reprised her role as Roz Doyle. Dan Butler appeared on the Frasier reboot as Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe and Edward Hibbert came back as Gil Chesterton. Harriet Sansom Harris also returned as Frasier’s agent.
