Instead, a Viltrumite named Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has arrived to claim the planet for the Empire. “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up” deals with the fallout of this fight, and its affects on Mark. Immediately, Mark and Conquest fly into battle. The shock wave contributes even more damage to the city around them. Conquest tells Mark his greatest pleasure is killing, so he volunteers to battle. As they throw each other through buildings, Mark realizes the toll the battle could take on the planet. He throws Conquest into outer space, where Conquest mocks Mark by turning his blood into the shape of a heart. He then lays a massive hit on Mark’s face.

At home, Oliver, Debbie, and Paul watch the fight unfold. Oliver gets ready to help Mark, and while Debbie wants him to stay, she lets him go with some advice. After he leaves, she collapses from grief. Oliver arrives at the city as Mark and Conquest continue their destructive fight.

Conquest comes to deliver a massive blow, but Mark asks him to stop. The Viltrumite tells Mark he does not let anyone surrender. He needs Mark to find the proper motivation to escalate the fight. As he’s about to lay another blow on Mark, Oliver lands a punch and tries to follow up with another. Conquest grabs Oliver and throws him into the asphalt, preparing to dismember him. Mark arrives to break up the fight again, and Conquest mocks Mark for not using Oliver to gain an advantage in the fight.

Cecil has Sinclair working on new and improved Reanimen, based on the corpses of the other Invincibles. However, they’re not ready for the fight yet. In the hospital, Eve’s parents watch over her as the news covers Mark’s fight. Eve wakes up and finds out she’s been out for weeks. When she sees Mark in trouble, she reveals his identity as she prepares to fly out and help him.

Mark finally lands a handful of blows, but Conquest continues to dominate him. Conquest stands over Mark and talks about Nolan. Oliver gets another punch in, causing Conquest to actively go after Oliver. After he slaps Mark into another building, he punches Oliver, knocking out all of his teeth. He then lifts Oliver over his head, pulling his head and legs in opposite directions to rip him in half. Just before he does, Mark launches at him. While he’s distracted, Cecil transports in and saves Oliver.

Back at the GDA, Eve pleads her case to go out to save Mark. She tells Cecil that he has no choice. Conquest goes faster and faster, using Mark as a battering ram to go through people like Nolan had previously. Mark reverses their momentum and lands a punch. When Conquest flies through the air, Eve creates matter. Conquest smashes through the pink shields to attack Eve, and when Mark tries to stop it, Conquest breaks his leg (with his bones coming out of his body).

Eve uses her matter-creating ability to craft a suit of armor. She then stops Conquest by changing the density of the air and swings matter at his face with a hammer. She continues to utilize every trick she has to smash him around, but he eventually reaches her and shatters her armor. He then crushes her face and disembowels Eve. As she falls to Earth, Mark catches her, and she dies in his arms. He screams out for Cecil, but no one comes.

Conquest licks Eve’s blood off his hands and tells Mark he was given Carte Blanche to do whatever he needed to take control of the planet. Mark and Conquest charge at each other again. They punch each other at the same time, breaking Mark’s arm and causing Conquest’s mechanical arm to shatter. As they continue fighting, Eve suddenly rises into the air, turning pink as she slowly floats into the sky.

Conquest takes Mark down and reveals how lonely he is, even as a Viltrumite. He laughs and tells Mark he will have to take it to his grave. However, Eve has revived and shoots an energy blast through Conquest, causing him to roast. When he tries to stand up and kill Eve again, Mark unleashes every punch he can, eventually headbutting Conquest to death by crushing his skull.

Covered in Conquest’s blood, Mark crawls to a naked Eve. She awakens, and they say, “I love you,” before passing out. Cecil and the remaining heroes arrive, surprised the fight is over. Mark wakes up in the GDA three days later with Eve standing over him. Eve reveals the truth: she never died but was close to it. When she was a child, the GDA put inhibitors in her body to stop her from having the ability to change living matter. The trauma of the fight allowed her to override the inhibitors and rebuild her body. Mark and Eve tell each other what they mean to one another and sleep.

Sinclair updates Cecil on the new Reanimen project, but they have not yet finished. Cecil reminds Sinclair about Conquest, and if that was what a single Viltrumite could do, imagine what an army might accomplish. Debbie and Paul wake up Mark and Eve. His mother comes to Mark’s side and apologizes for the life that Mark has to lead because of his powers. When Mark asks about Oliver, Cecil joins the group and tells them he can barely keep Oliver in bed. Mark then demands to see Conquest’s body, and when he confirms the Viltrumite is dead, he tells Cecil to burn the body.

Later, Robot leads the funeral for Rex. The heroes stand over his casket. Rae sobs from a distance, unable to join the funeral. Robot/Rudy announces he will change his name to Rex so that he can honor his sacrifice. Eve struggles to say goodbye during her eulogy and walks away sobbing. As Black Sampson begins his eulogy, Mark joins Eve. Eve admits she will always love Rex, and even through her tears, Mark smiles. Mark tells her that he would never have gotten over losing her, and instead, they get to be together.

The superheroes return home and sleep together, though after Eve removes Mark’s clothes with her powers, the costume melts into the ground. A montage of other stories flash across the screen. A Sequid army develops in the sewers. A bright light from a ship finds Battle Beast floating through space with the remains of a Viltrumite around him. When the ship opens, Battle Beast asks for more. Angstrom Levy agrees to help the Technicians build a new world. Cecil and Donald speak about Conquest. The Viltrumite is not dead, and Cecil intends to hold him until he recovers enough to be interrogated.

Oliver tells Mark how excited he is to rejoin the work to rebuild the city. Mark tells Oliver they need to discuss what happened. If anyone ever touches Mark’s family or friends again, he will kill them. He admits that Oliver was right.

In a post-credit scene, a clawed finger runs through dirt to complete a pentagram. Darkblood (Clancy Brown) continues to exist in literal Hell. After his pentagram is completed, a dark being (Bruce Campbell) emerges from the shadows. Darkblood believes there is a creature on Earth with a heart dark enough to allow his lord to possess his physical form. The Demon Detective also believes he can summon this being to Hell itself.

Was the Invincible Season 3 finale – “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up” – worth watching?

Invincible - "I Thought you'd never shut up" - Season 3 Finale

“I Thought You’d Never Shut Up” ends Season 3 on another blood-soaked finale, and the images the Invincible team continues to craft are absurd. They’re not only some of the most upsetting gore you will ever see on TV but they’re emotionally charged. The death and resurrection of Atom Eve will be a seminal moment in the series, and the impact Conquest leaves on Mark becomes shocking in its own right. The emotional stakes are threaded throughout “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up,” culminating in a breathtaking battle featuring Conquest, Mark, and Eve.

The real focus of “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up” comes from the relationship between Mark and Eve. We know that the two heroes have been in love for some time, and Season 3 often revolves around that relationship. However, how they express that bond only becomes stronger as the season progresses, and “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up” forces Mark to imagine a life without Eve. That proves too unbearable for him, and the violence he inflicts on Conquest is shocking.

We also got a quick explainer for why Rudy was referred to as Rex in the alternate timeline Mark found himself at the end of Season 2. That should still concern us as an audience, because that means their version of the timeline is still in play, and that group of heroes looked ragged from their lives. Is it possible that Eve from the future/alternate timeline was our Eve and that the nudge is needed to kick off the future events where they need Mark? It seems likely after the name change, but we will see.

The other big takeaways stem from this relationship as well. The goo around Mark’s clothes is somewhat concerning. It certainly has something to do with the reveal that Eve is far more powerful than we imagined. The ability to warp matter to your needs is quite the power, but if Eve does not learn how to harness the new wells of power, it could spell trouble in the long run.

Mark’s admission to Oliver is chilling. He has changed because of the fight with Conquest and the near death of Eve. But if Mark endorses this new way forward, will Oliver learn to kill first and ask questions later? Perhaps more importantly, what will Mark do when he finds out about Cecil’s latest faux pas? For all of the good that Cecil might have done to mend the fence, hiding Conquest and using dead Marks to create new Reanimen sounds like a breach of trust. If we know anything about Mark, he’s sure to take it in stride. Or, potentially kill Cecil, given the latest ultimatum.
