Howard Stern was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2012. He is one of the most influential radio show hosts worldwide, even though at times people do not have exactly nice things to say about him. But one fan may have crossed a line when they attacked Stern.

Steve Grillo recalls how he saved Howard Stern’s life

In 1996, The New York Daily News reported that famous media personality and radio show host Howard Stern could have lost his life after a fan decided to attack him. The publication at the time reported that the fan was waiting for the host behind his studio at the time.

It was noted that when that fan actually saw Stern, they yelled and ran towards Stern saying,

Hey Howard, I’m going to kick your a**!

Howard Stern’s driver at the time witnessed the entire thing and shared that the fan, who was identified as Samuel Callea, had expressed his desire to kill him. Reports at the time suggested that the fan had a weapon nearby, rather than carrying it with them. The shotgun was what they would have used to end the host’s life which the fan later unloaded.

Deputy Sheriffs Steven Calzati and Nick Dousmanis at the time shared with the publication that the fan seemed like he was under the influence. Samuel Callea’s brother later revealed that Samuel had been going through a lot at the time and was on disability leave, adding that he’d lost his mind. Talking about the weapon, Joe Callea says,

He just carries it with him. He’s paranoid.

Samuel Callea was arrested, and there have been no reports of him interacting with Howard Stern again. Steve Grillo, who worked for Howard Stern and had witnessed everything and practically saved his life, shared on Opie Radio,

He [fan] starts running full speed toward Howard and me and Ronnie. Howard was like a deer in the headlights. Just standing there like he didn’t know what to do… So, I grabbed Howard, and I said, ‘Run.’ And I push him towards the door.

He added that someone who was also with them [Ronnie] grabbed the fan at the gate and yelled at Howard Stern to get in the elevator. Grillo noted that he was yelling at the security guards at the same time to shut the gates.

Steve Grillo shared on Opie Radio that he saw a car parked outside the building and told his partner to bring Howard Stern from the back but later went on to reveal that the fan had figured out that there were two entrances. He concluded by saying that Stern and he were shaking when they went back upstairs.

He said that he’s the father of three daughters, and when he was going through his first divorce, he was really scared. Stern noted that his daughters are the most important thing to him in the world, and he was scared as he did not know how to build a relationship with his daughters without his wife. Thus, he went to therapy.

I didn’t have any lessons. I didn’t really have that level of communication with my own father.

Howard Stern further shared that his therapist asked him to get real with him, which surprised him because he’d never had a real conversation with anyone before that. Stern has noted his experience with therapy in his book, Howard Stern Comes Again. He wrote (via CBS News),

The more I went, the more that translated into how I interviewed my guests. I found myself changing my approach because I had experienced what it was like to have someone genuinely interested in my life. Therapy opened me up and enabled me to appreciate how fulfilling it was to be truly heard.

In his interview with The New York Times, he was asked how much being famous helps him during interviews, to which he said it does help to some extent.

He added that celebrities who come on his show are aware that he’s open and honest about topics, and that eventually it leads to an honest discussion.
