“I’m certain some companies are going to tank”: Rockstar Delaying GTA 6 Could Force Multiple Studios to Shut Down

You’re a game developer, sitting at your desk, staring at a giant whiteboard filled with potential release dates for your upcoming game. You’re trying to be strategic, avoiding the colossal tidal waves of major releases that could drown your sales. Suddenly, a dark cloud looms over your plans, Rockstar Games.

The studio that has a history of causing earthquakes in the industry without even lifting a finger. Their mere presence on a launch calendar can make game studios tremble. And now, with GTA 6 on the horizon, everyone is playing an industry-wide version of musical chairs, hoping they don’t get left standing when the music stops.

But what happens if Rockstar suddenly decides, “Eh, let’s delay GTA 6 by six months“? What does that do to all the developers who carefully plotted their release dates to steer clear of the GTA juggernaut? Well, folks, it’s chaos. Absolute, industry-wide chaos.

Game developers are holding their breath because of GTA 6

Think of GTA 6 as a giant, unmovable monolith in the gaming release schedule. Other studios have two options, release before it and hope for the best, or get out of the way and pray their financials survive the wait.

And when Rockstar inevitably pulls a “Surprise! We need more time!” and pushes GTA 6 into the next year, the industry collectively facepalms. Ben Porter, director of consulting at Newzoo, puts it best in an interview with PC Gamer. He said,

If you’re a game company who’s holding its breath waiting for GTA 6 to get out, and then it gets delayed by three, four, five, six months, what do you do? You either have to be able to launch into that big black hole that’s been left open now, or you have to extend your run rate by an additional six months—I’m certain some companies are going to tank as a result of that, right?

The problem is that many developers have already lined up their releases perfectly to avoid the GTA 6 storm. If Rockstar delays, suddenly, they’re left in a wasteland where they either have to risk launching in an empty, eerie void or somehow find the budget to extend their timeline until the new GTA release window is clear. Spoiler alert, most studios don’t have an extra six months of financial runway lying around.

Some studios might take the gamble, thinking, “Well, maybe our game will be a nice alternative to GTA 6.” But let’s be real, very few titles can thrive when the gaming world is collectively obsessed with Rockstar’s next crime-filled blockbuster. It’s like launching a new soda the same week Coca-Cola decides to introduce a mystery flavor that turns out to be liquid gold.

A gigantic opportunity or disaster waiting to happen?

Here’s the crazy part, if GTA 6 does get delayed, the vacuum it leaves behind could be a golden opportunity for someone. Picture it, millions of gamers primed and ready for an epic open-world experience, suddenly find themselves with nothing to do. If a developer is smart, they could sneak in a game that scratches a similar itch.

But let’s not kid ourselves. For every game that capitalizes on an unexpected window, there are five others that completely misfire. Timing is everything in this industry, and right now, everyone is watching Rockstar with bated breath, hoping they don’t yank the rug out from under them.

And then there’s Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, adding fuel to the speculation fire. They’ve got Borderlands 4 scheduled for September 23, 2025. Why would they release it in the same window as GTA 6? Could it be a hint that GTA 6 isn’t actually coming this fall? Are they secretly winking at us, letting us know that the delay is inevitable?

So now, game developers everywhere are anxiously awaiting Rockstar’s next move like it’s a high-stakes poker game. And if GTA 6 gets pushed into 2026, expect a lot of studios to start scrambling.

Some might even collapse under the weight of the delay, proving once again that when Rockstar sneezes, the entire industry catches a cold. For now, though, all we can do is wait. And maybe keep an eye on Take-Two’s financial statements for any more cryptic hints.
