The future of the Dragon Ball series doesn’t look very promising as of now. With Akira Toriyama’s unexpected passing in March 2024, fans are left wondering what’s next for this still-loved franchise. The recent conclusion of Dragon Ball DAIMA and the announcement of Dragon Ball Super have only added to this uncertainty.

But the thing is, Dragon Ball has been a part of our lives for over 40 years, and those who have been on this journey alongside me will continue to feel its impact. And personally, I don’t want this series to ever die out in nothingness.
But, there’s already some exciting news on the horizon I just found out. A long-time Dragon Ball animator has hinted that there’s a possibility of a remake! Now while it does excite me more than anything else, there’s one thing I believe the remake should carefully handle – the absurd amount of unnecessary fanservice.
Dragon Ball needs to lower its fanservice scenes if it gets a remake!

If a Dragon Ball remake is really in the works, I think it’s got to dial down the unnecessary fanservice to get accepted in today’s generation and avoid any controversy. Don’t get me wrong, a little nod to the fans is always cool, but the original Dragon Ball series had some really questionable scenes, especially with Goku and Master Roshi, that just don’t hold up in this day and age.
Speaking from a technical standpoint, excessive fanservice is just unnecessary baggage. Sure, some fans love it (even I do), but, unlike those old times, the best of the best anime series these days are all about masterful storytelling that resonates with a larger audience. It’s not restricted to Japan only, everyone’s watching anime now.
That’s why, if a Dragon Ball remake relies too heavily on fanservice, it’ll risk being written off as a kids’ show. To be taken seriously, it needs to strike a balance between action, drama, and heart; without relying on cheap thrills. It was acceptable back in the day, but not anymore now!
The potential this possible Dragon Ball remake holds is insane!

Honestly, it looks like a Dragon Ball remake might actually happen one day. Recently, renowned animator, Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, shared his thoughts on the possibility of this, and it came out pretty unexpected. When asked if he’d be down to participate in a remake, Nakatsuru said he’d love to contribute if he could be useful.

Nakatsuru also acknowledged that if a remake were to happen, it might be better suited to a new, younger team. He pointed out that the original manga is still the foundation, but there are many ways to reinterpret it and create something new. It’s a pretty humble and open-minded take if you ask me, and it also hints he’s seriously considering this remake.
What stood out even more in this interview, was Nakatsuru’s focus on the bigger picture. For him, it’s not about whether he’s involved or not, it’s about keeping the Dragon Ball spirit alive and inspiring new generations, which I personally agree with him the most. He even hopes that a remake could lead to something entirely new and innovative, something that goes beyond even Toriyama’s original vision. That’s some pretty cool thinking, isn’t it?
The Dragon Ball series is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
