“I loved that they leaned into it”: Henry Cavill’s Call of Duty Film May Never Come but a 2020 Movie Has Already Featured Modern Warfare in Secret

Fans of the Call of Duty franchise have been stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the long-anticipated movie adaptation. For years, rumors have swirled, with even hinting at Henry Cavill as Captain Price. Despite the excitement, these rumors have only led to further delays.

It now seems that the film may never come to fruition. While fans think they might never get to see the franchise turned into a movie, they might be surprised to learn that the franchise has already made a subtle appearance on the big screen, albeit in a secret, unexpected way.

Call of Duty has already snuck onto the big screen

It turns out that the beloved Call of Duty has already made its way to the big screen in a way that many fans may have missed. The film in question is Sniper: Assassin’s End (2020), an American action film, starring Chad Michael Collins.

Yes, you read that right, the actor who has been part of the franchise for years as Alex Keller. In an interview with Looper, Collins discussed the film and revealed that the script actually contained a secret reference to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, making it an Easter egg for fans of the game series.

He described the moment as a fun, unspoken nod for fans, who would recognize the connection to the popular video game. Even Collin was surprised and excited at how the script fully leaned into his connection to the game, especially about his character.

It was a really nice fun Easter egg […] and I loved that they leaned into it. I love that the script had that in there and I love that.

For those who might not know, Collins voiced Alex Keller in all three Modern Warfare games (playable character in multiplayer mode and also part of the story), which only adds an extra layer of depth to the reference.

So, while it may not be the movie adaptation of the series that fans were hoping for, Sniper: Assassin’s End offers a small but welcome Easter egg for those who have followed Collins’ Modern Warfare journey.

A dream that may never come true

The idea of a Call of Duty movie has become a distant dream for many fans, and as time goes on, it seems less and less likely to come to life. The excitement over the project has given way to skepticism.

Given the current state of Hollywood’s movie adaptations, it might be better for the studio that the project has stalled. It’s no secret that many high-profile movie adaptations of video games have failed to live up to expectations.

Sure, there are a few successes (like The Last of Us, Sonic the Hedgehog, and more) along the way, but they are far and few between. Activision is unlikely to take the risk of an adaptation (which usually doesn’t follow the source material) unless it is confident it will succeed.

If the movie eventually gets made and Henry Cavill (known for forcing adaptation to stick to the source material) is involved, fans then will have some hope that the project will stay true to the source material. Cavill’s passion for gaming shows he would bring a level of authenticity to the role that fans would appreciate.

Until then, fans can wait and hope. And while waiting, they can enjoy the surprise Modern Warfare reference in Sniper: Assassin’s End, a small but delightful Easter egg for anyone who has ever picked up a controller and played the game.
