‘How could you find a fault?’ cry RTE Home of the Year viewers as ‘fantastic’ Donegal home falls short of final

RTE Home Of The Year viewers have all been left making the same remark about a “fantastic” house in Donegal.

The RTE series that showcases Ireland’s most jaw-dropping houses made its return to the small screen last month.

Looking for individuality, functionality and clever design, the three judges will each score the homes out of 10 and the home with the highest combined score in each programme will go through to the final, where the winner will be crowned.

Tonight’s episode saw the judges head to Donegal, where Michaela and Stephen live with their three children.

The couple found their perfect site and worked with architect Des Ewing to plan and create their dream house.

The new build, split level, upside down home took three years to complete.

The couple were able to manage this incredible build and went for the upside-down layout to make the most of the location.

Michaela and Stephen furnished their interiors with a classic style with modern touches which are perfect for their young family.

They love their coastal views and bright large open spaces for watching the sunset and entertaining.

Upon entering the home, Hugh gasped: “Oh my goodness, the sheer scale of this hall with a dramatic view and wonderful sweeping staircase.

Not immediately impressed, Amanda remarked: “I’m confused and I’m trying to understand the home.

“You’ve got timber panelling on the wall, so to me it’s like, from a different era.”

Unfortunately with just a score of 25, the fabulous and spacious Donegal home didn’t manage to snag a place in the final.

Despite not making it to the final, RTE viewers were blown away by the impressive home and took to social media to express their views.

Carole said: “Massive house and fantastic views, but not a lot of personality in this house.”

Grace tweeted: “I’m expecting Jason from the Oppenheim Group on Selling Sunset to be showing us this house, not Hugh Wallace.”

SECURED A SPOT

Mags joked: “That’s it – I need a lotto win and fast.”

One viewer said, in regards to Amanda’s remark: “She’s only jealous – how on earth could you find fault with that first home.”

Tonight, Roisin and Matteo’s Dublin home blew the judges away by snagging a final score of 26, securing it a spot in the final.

The couple bought their 1930’s home in 2020 and began refurbishments, tackling it in stages over the next few years and turning it into their dream family home.

CHARMING HOME

They were a great team as Roisin, an architect, designed the renovations while Matteo is handy at DIY.

They worked hard to redesign the layout and maximise space and got interior influence from their mid-century furniture and the Scandinavian design style.

Their focus was on clean lines and the use of natural materials and textures to add warmth.

The family love the fact that their home makes them happy every time they come in the front door and that it has allowed them to be creative.
