Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Deal With the Devil: Bloodborne Had to Be a PlayStation Exclusive to “Make it look good”

Every gamer out there hates Sony for forever locking in Bloodborne behind the PlayStation exclusivity cell and never letting it out. But have Soulsborne fans ever considered what other options the makers of the game might have even had at the time?

Bloodborne is one of the Souls games that helped Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of the game and now president of FromSoftware, cement his legacy in the gaming world. However, that required sacrifice, and it included locking in the masterpiece of a game behind a wall that it would enjoy staying behind for a while, but then regret it forever.

What were FromSoftware’s needs with Bloodborne that only Sony could fulfill?

Bloodborne is without a doubt one of the most beautiful PlayStation exclusives ever, and it remains a shame it never became something more than that after it came out. While it has collected a cult fanbase that consistently nags Sony to bring an update to the franchise once again, we all know how far that is going to get us.

Revealing why the studio chose to work with the giant when Bloodborne was getting conceptualized, its producer, Masaaki Yamagiwa, revealed the following in a conversation with PlayStation Lifestyle.

I always wanted to make a game set in the Victorian era, but to make it look good — with all the clothing and the architecture and things — required a console more powerful than the ones that were around. the arrival of the PS4 finally gave us that. Bloodborne isn’t a game that could have been cross-generation, it was only possible on PS4.

Mr. Yamagiwa revealed how the ultimate factor in deciding why Bloodborne would be perfect on PlayStation’s platform lay in its powerful hardware and its ability to run better than any other console of the time, including the Xbox One. The producer also states how it was not at all possible to release the 2015 title on multiple platforms because, in the end, it could have only run on the PS4.

Why Bloodborne shouldn’t be locked behind exclusivity anymore

We get it; FromSoftware wanted to deliver the best experience possible, and only Sony’s gaming platform enabled that dream at the time. However, a decade after when the game was first released, the industry has way more to offer than it did back then.

The tables have even turned around, with the Xbox Series X, Microsoft’s latest generation console, practically beating out the PS5 in terms of raw performance, at least on paper. With major advancements in both hardware and graphics, all that’s left now is the studios’ willingness to bring back the cult classic.

Gamers would know this is a cry for help in the void, which is why some of them have even taken matters into their own hands. Using emulators, Bloodborne on PC with updated graphics, mods, and most importantly, 60 FPS is possible now more than ever, with many even predicting that the emulation will be perfect by the year’s end, getting rid of all present bugs and issues.
