“He’d have wanted the show to go on”: Rey Mysterio Changed His Mind About Tribute to Eddie Guerrero in One of the Best Matches of His Life

Rey Mysterio recently revealed a heartbreaking incident about the time he fought against Shawn Michaels to honor the passing away of his guide and mentor, Eddie Guerrero.

Mysterio admitted that he was not in the right state of mind to perform inside the squared circle just days after Guerrero’s death, but the only thing that motivated him to fight was Guerrero himself.

WWE planned to honor Eddie Guerrero by dedicating an episode of Raw to his legacy. In that special episode, fellow wrestlers talked about Guerrero, shared some stories about him, and several matches were booked in his honor.

But among them was a boy whose grief was larger than everyone else in the WWE, because Mysterio lost the man who built him from scratch, and he was in no state to perform in front of a packed arena. But he did, as he went out and fought the best fight of his life.

Rey Mysterio later revealed in an episode of the “WWE vault” that he was not ready to take on Shawn, but when he thought that, if Eddie Guerrero was still alive he would have definitely wanted Rey Mysterio to fight.

“I think Eddie enjoyed that night, you know, from heaven; it was very special,”

“But it worked out and I go back and watch this and I see that I’m off, you know, a slight bit on certain things. It’s hard to replace Eddie’s memory with what’s going on at that time.”

Mysterio further claimed that if the roles were reversed, Guerrero would have gone out and performed as he would never have wanted the show to stop.

Mysterio’s loss was big and so was his performance that night. It’s for sure that if Guerrero was alive, he would be immensely proud of the wrestler he made.

The following year, Rey Mysterio’s WWE career took a massive turn for the good, as he paired up with Batista and got involved in a massive feud with WWE superstar Randy Orton, which finally allowed Mysterio to get his hands on the World Heavyweight Championship.

Did Eddie Guerrero reach his true potential in the WWE?

Many WWE fans claim that Eddie Guerrero never got the chance to fulfill his true potential. Guerrero was born into a wrestling family with loads of expectations on his shoulders.

He travelled to different countries to perfect his art. From his initial wrestling days, he showed massive potential and was quickly labelled as one of the most promising talents in world wrestling.

But things quickly went downhill as after an accident, Guerrero became addicted to Alcohol and Painkillers which led him into a dark abyss. His wife and child left him and WWE turned their back on him.

With time he managed to recover from the addiction and win back his family and job but good days didn’t last too long for Guerrero as he passed away in 2005 due to heart failure.

Though it has been years since he passed away WWE fans still talk about Eddie Guerrero and wonder what he could have achieved if his life didn’t end so early.
