“He was isolating me”: Johnny Depp Was Scared After Tim Burton Treated Him Differently Than His Co-stars in Edward Scissorhands

Johnny Depp might have been one of the most incredible actors to come out of the past few decades in Hollywood, but the actor had his own struggles dealing with fame, as the case with most actors that rise to prominence. However, Depp revealed exactly how paranoid he got on the set of Edward Scissorhands, his brilliant fantasy film directed by Tim Burton.

In an interview, Johnny Depp revealed what he felt like on the set of Edward Scissorhands, one of his many star-making roles that put the actor on the map. The actor revealed that he actually doubted his own abilities and felt very paranoid by how Tim Burton was treating him.

Johnny Depp revealed that he actually felt that he was not delivering a good performance, which was further compounded by how Tim Burton was treating the actor on set. He said (via geo.tv):

I was absolutely convinced that I was blowing it. Tim had rehearsed everyone else in the cast. Everyone. Not me. He didn’t rehearse me. He was excluding me from the cast and crew, isolating me.

Edward Scissorhands remains one of the more weird films that he has done, and a lot of his anxiety came from the fact that he was not being rehearsed with, which is something that the director did with all the other actors. He elaborated:

It was scary. I was uber paranoid. Why is [Tim] not rehearsing me? Maybe he trusts me. No he doesn’t. He doesn’t trust you, what are you nuts? He’s going to cast someone else, man.

Of course, no one else took up Johnny Depp’s position, and the film went on to be one of his best received master pieces with Tim Burton. The other collaboration with Tim Burton was a little less fruitful, given that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (where Depp played Willy Wonka) failed to impress fans and critics alike.

Is Johnny Depp returning for Pirates of the Caribbean 6?

According to Variety, as of December of 2024, there is a Pirates of the Caribbean currently in development over at Disney, which has not engaged with Depp since his exile (and return) from Hollywood in the wake of Amber Heard’s accusations of domestic violence which was leveled at the actor.

However it has been revealed that there are in fact two separate scripts that are being developed, one which could actually bring back Johnny Depp to the franchise. Whether the script is being developed to specifically cater to Depp or simply just include the character of Jack Sparrow remains a subject of pure speculation. All that fans can be actually sure about is the fact Disney doesn’t really consider the franchise to be dead, just yet.
