George R.R. Martin shares positive update on new Game of Thrones spin-off

George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series was adapted into the hit fantasy series Game of Thrones. The series received critical acclaim, and its popularity led to the spin-off shows House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with the latter premiering later this year.

During a recent interview with Collider, Martin discussed the upcoming spin-off series, giving a glowing review of the footage he had seen from the episodes. The author revealed that he had watched the entire first season and was pleased with the adaptation of his novellas.

It’s a little softer. It’s a little more humorous. I hope the audience will be open to that kind of change.

Martin made the above comment, teasing a lighter tone for the new spin-off compared to his dark and gory mainline novels set in the world of Westeros.

Given that the author is known for his typically dark writing, it will be interesting to see how a lighter tone of his work translates on the small screen. Furthermore, the author also shared that the creative team, which includes showrunner Ira Parker, was already hard at work on the second season.

George R.R. Martin remains committed to finishing his Game of Thrones books

While Martin was optimistic about fans embracing the lighter tone of the upcoming spin-off series, the author also expressed that he was aware of the challenges of the adaptation.

Martin stated that adaptations were always prone to criticism, and some tended to turn out rather frustrating. However, the author explained that fans would always have the books to turn to, which he remained committed to finishing.

I have to finish the books. That’s the one thing I’m completely in control of.

Martin made the above statement, reiterating that he would finish the novel series, which hasn’t had a new installment since 2011.

The author has been working on the next planned installment in the series, The Winds of Winter, followed by a final installment. However, Martin did not provide an estimated timeline for finishing the novels. Meanwhile, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut its six-episode first season in late 2025.

Game of Thrones is streaming on Max.
