Eddie Howe braced for enormous pay rise if he guides Newcastle into Champions League after winning Carabao Cup

EDDIE HOWE is set for a whopping 50 per cent pay rise if he can follow up Newcastle’s Carabao Cup success with Champions League qualification.

The 47-year-old ended the club’s 56-year wait for a trophy by leading the Magpies to a 2-1 win over Liverpool.

He became the first Englishman since Harry Redknapp in 2008 to win major domestic silverware and has already cemented his status as a legend on Tyneside.

Howe instantly set his sights on winning more top honours in a clear indication he sees his future at Newcastle.

The first target is ensuring a top four Premier League finish and a return to Europe’s top club competition.

And if he can achieve that then his salary will rocket up to around £9million-a-year as part of a bonus in his current contract, which runs until 2028.

That could help stave off potential interest from England next year.

Howe was top of most people’s lists for the Three Lions job after Gareth Southgate quit last summer.

But after weeks of speculation, German Thomas Tuchel got it while the Toon boss claimed he had received no approach from the Football Association.

Howe does have plenty of admirers within the FA, who only handed Tuchel a deal until the end of the 2026 World Cup.

And he would be near the top in their list of potential targets if the role becomes available following next year’s tournament.

But Howe and his family are happily settled in the North East and he is set to be backed massively by the club’s Saudi owners.

Despite his frustrations at a lack of incoming transfers over the past 18 months due to PSR rules and tensions with sporting director Paul Mitchell, everyone at the club is pulling in the same direction after coming through a tough period financially.

Star striker Alexander Isak will begin his talks over a new contract at the end of the season.

And hot property Howe could even hold his own over a potential extension as well.

The gaffer is not the only Wembley hero in line for a reward after Sunday’s historic win.

Dan Burn is set to be awarded the Freedom of Northumberland.

The 32-year-old defender was born in Blyth, 14 miles outside the city, and is set to receive another honour to go with the Carabao Cup winners’ medal and his England call-up.

Announcing the nomination for the life-long Magpies fan, Northumberland County Council leader Glen Sanderson said: “It’s a great victory for the region and the fact a local lad played such a crucial part in this journey is wonderful.

“As a season ticket holder for over 30 years, I’m extremely proud, not only of this achievement, but that someone from our county has been a part of it.

“I’m sure it’s a dream come true for Dan, who’s also had his first England call-up, and I believe this will inspire our young people to achieve their dreams. I intend to nominate Dan for the highest honour we can bestow; the Freedom of Northumberland.”

Burn played for both hometown teams Blyth Town and Blyth Spartans as a youngster before climbing up the football ladder.

Conservative councillor for South Blyth, DAn Carr, added: “Dan Burn is a true inspiration for young footballers in Northumberland. He’s proof that local talent can reach the very top, and his passion for his hometown shines through both on and off the pitch.

“Awarding him the Freedom of Northumberland would be a fitting tribute to his achievements and his connection to our community playing for Blyth Town FC, Blyth Spartans and New Hartley.”

Carabao Cup final ratings

NEWCASTLE ended their 70-year trophy drought in style by beating Premier League champions-elect Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The 2-1 scoreline flattered the Reds in truth, with Eddie Howe’s Toon having produced a sensational performance to flatten runaway league leaders.

Local lad Dan Burn, fresh off his first England call-up, rose highest to head his boyhood club into the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Alexander Isak then deservedly doubled Newcastle’s lead shortly after the break.

The Toon could have further increased their advantage, only for forgotten man Federico Chiesa to hand Liverpool a late lifeline on 94 minutes.

But that goal was unable to spur a further comeback as Newcastle saw out the remaining added time.

Here’s how SunSport’s Lloyd Canfield rated the Liverpool players and Gary Stonehouse rated the Newcastle players.
