Dune Express Revolutionizes Sand Transport in the Southwest US with 42-Mile Conveyor Belt

The Dune Express, a 42-mile conveyor belt recently installed by Atlas Energy Solutions, is revolutionizing the transportation of sand for hydraulic fracturing across the southwest U.S. Stretching from Kermit, Texas, into Lea County, New Mexico, this massive structure is designed to streamline the delivery of sand by bypassing traditional trucking methods. The conveyor belt, capable of carrying 13 tons of sand at speeds of 10 mph, provides a safer and more efficient alternative to the heavy truck traffic typically seen in the oil-rich Permian Basin.

The conveyor belt’s design and operation highlight innovative approaches within the oil and gas industry. While not the longest in the world, with the record held by a 61-mile belt in Western Sahara, The Dune Express is a significant infrastructure investment, costing $400 million. It is equipped with technology to monitor and maintain its rollers, ensuring consistent operation and reducing the risk of failures.

While the conveyor belt offers logistical advantages, it has raised environmental concerns. It traverses regions home to species like the sagebrush lizard, recently listed as endangered, prompting worries about habitat disruption and increased drilling activity leading to further environmental impact.

Despite these concerns, local officials like Lea County Commissioner Brad Weber anticipate the belt will have a positive impact by reducing traffic and the associated risks on nearby highways. Atlas Energy plans to increase the belt’s operational capacity later this year, which could further enhance its efficiency and utility in the region.
