As part of its recent expansion towards incorporating AI in just about everything, Microsoft has announced a ‘Copilot for Gaming’, which aims to assist players across multiple genres of video games across a wide variety of tasks.
Ethical and accuracy related concerns aside, this is quite the strange move, and has not been taken kindly by content creators and netizens alike. Users have lashed out at Xbox, accusing them of undoing years of hard work put together by content creators in the form of AI-generated content.
Xbox’s Copilot For Gaming Initiative Kicks Off with A Mostly Negative Response

Xbox has revealed an AI ‘gaming coach’ of sorts, which is set to improve player skills as well as guide them across a proper course while playing through multiple popular video game tiles – such as Minecraft, as depicted within the brief but informative official blog post.
Do we really need AI for this? there are countless great content creators on YouTube and articles that offer much more precise instructions that don’t require 10,000 rainforests to be wiped out

However, this has not sat well with the community in general, with many calling out Xbox’s push toward AI an unnecessary gimmick that erodes upon the human aspect of hardworking creators by replacing them with AI-generated slop.
That sounds interesting assuming it’s actually useful

After all, there exist multiple, well renowned content creators on YouTube and other social media sites/platforms who can do a far better job when compared to AI summaries. Additionally, they do not require a ton of computational horsepower either – which could result in a disuse of energy.
This could actually be an interesting idea – if it was even remotely useful.
I liked the idea of the recap one. Sometimes when I put down a long RPG and come back, it’s like what was I doing again and how do I play this. pic.twitter.com/oV5WJ1RYrR

Most AI generated summaries are wildly incorrect and refuse to take into consideration nuances and general niche situations, for which the human touch is very much still needed.

That’s not to say that it doesn’t make some sense though – after all, this could be legitimately useful, at least in certain cases. For example, asking the AI chatbot on how to progress through simpler stuff in an already well-established game (such as Minecraft).
We haven’t needed this for 35 years of gaming and we don’t need it now 💀

This does, however, beg the question if we even need the tool in the first place, given how gamers have played just fine without these tools for quite some time now. After all, exploring a game on your own is a joy of its own.
Wonder what PlayStation might make to compete with it

If anything, it should be interesting to see how PlayStation responds towards Xbox’s move, which is likely by releasing an AI tool of their very own.
The Implications Of This Particular Tool Are Damning

Assuming this idea is a success, and Microsoft actually pushes for the tool to be incorporated into video games as a permanent, non-negotiable feature, this could have some serious implications on the whole video game industry.
For starters, players will be less inclined to look up original content or guides on the internet, only opting to use AI to ‘solve’ the issue. This is but a minor inconvenience, when we take into consideration that developers may have to force AI related queries into their games as a result – which results in problems so obtuse that only the AI can solve it.
Players are very likely to use AI to summarize a solution, since it is a much easier method. Regardless, this move by Xbox is in poor taste, and undermines actual content creators, since the data used for the AI helper is very likely to be trained using real-world videos and text, which brings into question the ethical and legal implications of the same.
All of this is assuming the AI can actually provide accurate information, that is.
