Baldur’s Gate 3 debuted all the way back in August 2023 and continues to collect new fans and win awards, establishing itself as one of the best RPGs of the decade. Developer Larian Studios has continued to update the game with major additions, and the future looks bright.

Since the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, it has often drawn comparisons to another legendary RPG title, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. While these games are entirely different in every aspect, Baldur’s Gate 3 is well on its way to becoming Skyrim‘s true successor in a way that no one could’ve anticipated.
Why Baldur’s Gate 3 is a true successor to Skyrim
Let’s be honest, the RPG genre brings us the most unforgettable adventures. These games allow players to take up the role of a number of different characters. They come in all shapes and sizes and bring all kinds of experiences.
Two of the most influential titles in the RPG landscape are undoubtedly Skyrim and Baldur’s Gate 3. Skyrim was developed by Bethesda and brought an open-world RPG action that pushed player freedom, exploration, and storytelling. Baldur’s Gate 3, on the other hand, was supposed to be deeply embedded in the Dungeons & Dragons mechanics.
Even though Baldur’s Gate 3 tried to position itself as a unique RPG, it’s really just a Skyrim sequel. Just like the Bethesda title, Baldur’s Gate 3 provides support for different playstyles. Gamers can experiment with all different kinds of spells and party synergies to engage with the tactical combat offered by the RPG.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has an extensive modding community that allows the fans to modify existing mechanics, add new content, and even overhaul visuals. It’s this modding aspect that has allowed Skyrim to thrive even after a decade of it’s release as players can bring everything they can imagine into the Bethesda game.
Even beyond modding, a number of players enjoy the vanilla experience these RPGs bring to the table. There are tons of secrets to unravel in both of these games that keep players right on the edge of their seats.
Skyrim and Baldur’s Gate 3 might appeal to completely different audiences. However, it’s the core element of discovery and incredible storytelling that makes the Larian game feel like a successor to one of the best RPGs ever made.
Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel is happening soon

Even though Baldur’s Gate 3 was a smash hit for Larian Studios, the developer has decided that it won’t be making a sequel in the future and plans to focus on new projects. This has left many wondering about the future of the franchise going forward.
However, Wizards of the Coast owner Hasbro has finally opened up about a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel. While chatting with PC Gamer, Hasbro stated that there will be a name even without Larian Studios. Currently, it’s looking into the issue, but it’s still in the early stages.
Hasbro is looking to find potential partners to develop a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel, but it’s going to take a long time before the game materializes. The company has stated that it doesn’t want to wait another decade or two to release the next game in the franchise and wants to take care of it.
While a number of gamers would like to see an immediate return to the Baldur’s Gate universe, Hasbro is making the right choice. Any kind of rushed game will turn out to be a massive disappointment to the fans, and ruin the reputation of the franchise which something Hasbro can’t afford.
