Dakota Johnson’s ‘Materialists’ Breaks Pedro Pascal’s Decades Long Career Trend and Its Got Me Weak in the Knees

All I’ve ever wanted is for silly little rom-coms to make a comeback, is that really too much to ask? Thankfully, this time it looks like the movie gods have finally delivered. And if anything can usher back that golden era, it’s this movie, no doubt about it! With a cast featuring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal in a love triangle, fans, including me, are beyond excited!

A24 just dropped the official trailer for Celine Song’s Materialists, her much-anticipated follow-up to Past Lives. And honestly? Disappointment doesn’t stand a chance, not even a sliver of it.

Stop everything! Pedro Pascal is finally a rom-com leading man!

Materialists tells the story of Lucy played by Dakota Johnson, a matchmaker in New York City who finds herself stuck in a romantic tug-of-war. On one side is a wealthy and charming dreamboat played by Pedro Pascal, and on the other is her messy but oh-so-irresistible ex, portrayed by Chris Evans.

This is a rom-com crisis of national importance, to say the least! The film is directed by Celine Song, who also penned the script, with David Hinojosa, Christine Vachon, and Pamela Koffler producing.

First and foremost, let’s just take a moment to appreciate all the good things this movie is giving us. A rom-com? Yes, please. Chris Evans? Absolutely. Dakota Johnson? Love her. The trailer itself? Exactly the feel-good energy we’ve been craving for years!

But you know what’s got me the most excited? Pedro Pascal. Not just any Pedro Pascal, not Pedro in a medieval tunic, not Pedro fighting off infected in a post-apocalyptic wasteland (seriously, I am not emotionally prepared for Joel’s fate), and not Pedro in a superhero suit either. Nope. This time, we’re getting Pedro Pascal as a regular, hot, rich guy in a rom-com. Plain and simple. And honestly? That’s what the world needed.

Considering how long the internet has been collectively thirsting over this man, the fact that it’s taken Hollywood THIS long to put him in this kind of role feels borderline criminal. But hey, better late than never! And now that it’s finally happening, I couldn’t be happier, and honestly, I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that.

How Materialists is giving fans exactly what they’ve been craving for years!

For years, Pedro Pascal was the guy popping up in single-episode roles on TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Law & Order, The Good Wife, and many more. There should honestly be a drinking game for spotting Pedro Pascal in major franchises and hit shows, because let’s be real, 9 times out of 10, he’s there. But Hollywood hadn’t quite figured out what to do with him yet.

Of course, Game of Thrones was the moment the world took notice. Oberyn Martell may have been gone too soon, but that role cemented Pedro as someone you just had to watch.

Then came Narcos, which proved just how great Pedro Pascal’s screen presence is. But it was The Mandalorian that truly launched him into the spotlight. And then came The Last of Us, which officially solidified Pedro Pascal as Hollywood’s ultimate “zaddy”.

Thus, I cannot begin to express how grateful I am that this movie is finally breaking the trend. Pedro Pascal has been serving us tragic backstories, emotional damage, and life-or-death stakes for years, and don’t get me wrong, he’s phenomenal at it. But I, along with millions of other fans have been begging Hollywood to just let him be a hot, charming, well-dressed man in a rom-com. And finally, Materialists is making it happen! and I will be seated for every inch of it!
