Celtic 2 Rangers 3 – How the players rated as Nico Raskin helps Barry Ferguson outsmart Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops in derby

RANGERS soared to a 3-2 win over Celtic at Parkhead.

Meaning Barry Ferguson became the first Rangers manager to win his first derby since Walter Smith in 1991.

A stellar first half performance gave the Light Blues a strong foothold in the game.

And although Brendan Rodgers‘ men completed a comeback in the second 45 to draw the game level, it was Hamza Igamane that netted the winner late on to win the three points.

So how did the players rate in the fiery derby clash?

Celtic

Kasper Schmeichel:

No chance with any of the Rangers goals but got lucky with a slack pass to Vaclav Cerny. Veteran Dane never looked at ease and that didn’t help his team. 4

Alistair Johnston: Nightmare day for the Canadian. Struggled throughout, slipped for Hamza Igamane’s winner and then missed a last-gasp sitter to level it when he stole in at the back post. 4

Cameron Carter-Vickers:

Missed a header in the first half and then misjudged a long clearance seconds before the Rangers winner. Normally reliable US defender was below par. 4

Maik Nawrocki:

First start since May and was the best of the rejigged Celtic backline. Big clearance from Cerny but should have scored from a header in the first half.

Jeffrey Schlupp:

Lost Raskin as Rangers took an early lead and chose the safe option on the ball far too many times. Improved after the break and was unlucky with a 25-yard shot. 5

Arne Engels:

Didn’t get into the game in the first half but was better after the break as he upped his levels. Set-piece delivery was decent but needs to do more in general. 5

Reo Hatate:

Japanese midfielder was denied by a brilliant Jack Butland save early on but made no mistake after bursting through to equalise with a low shot. Celtic’s best player. 6

Luke McCowan:

First Old Firm start with Callum McGregor crocked and came so close to scoring with a low shot. Improved in the second half but still not at his best. 5

Nicolas Kuhn:

German winger was hooked at the break after showing nothing in the first half. Seemed to lack belief that he could get at Ridvan Yilmaz in a poor display. 3

Daizen Maeda:

Header cleared off the line but buried his next one early in the second half. Now on 28 for the season but team-mates didn’t match his energy. 6

Jota:

Quiet start but burst to life in the closing stages of the first half. Switched right for start of the second period and crossed for Maeda to net. Replaced on 70. 5

Subs: Adam Idah (5) on for the ineffective Kuhn at the break and his presence helped but he didn’t get a sniff of goal as Rangers dealt with him.

Yang Hyun-Jun (5) took over from Jota on the right wing and made an impact with his pace and direct running.

Rangers

Jack Butland:

Superb save from Reo Hatate in the first half and was at it again to deny Jeffrey Schlupp with the game poised at 2-2. Back to his best form. 8

Dujon Sterling:
Unbelievable clearance to deny Daizen Maeda a goal but couldn’t get a leap to keep out the second. Defended well in the main. Booked and subbed on 82. 7

James Tavernier:
Perfect corner for Nico Raskin’s opener. Caught out at the back post for Maeda’s header but calmed his team at 2-2 and lapped up a rare Parkhead win. 8

John Souttar:
Dispelled any question marks over his ability to play two games in 72 hours and put in a top shift to help limit Celtic to very few clear-cut chances. 8

Leon Balogun:
Lucky with a slack passback in the first half but the veteran defended well before he ran out of steam and had to be replaced before the hour-mark. 6

Ridvan Yilmaz:
Got the nod at left-back with Jefte unavailable and had Nicolas Kuhn in his back pocket. Had a tougher test against Jota but stuck to it before being replaced. 7

Nico Raskin:
Brilliant run and terrific leap to flick header into the bottom corner. Belgian then set up the second with more of the same. Exhausted at end but made a huge contribution. 9

Connor Barron:
Snapped into tackles and kept the game moving when he got on the ball, but he lost Reo Hatate at crucial point for the Celtic equaliser. Dragged a shot wide. 8

Mohamed Diomande:

Calm touch and finish for Rangers’ second. Came close to a booking with a few tackles but put in an energetic shift for his side before being subbed. 8

Vaclav Cerny:

Should have taken a shot after intercepting Kasper Schmeichel’s pass and instead wasted a glaring chance. Lovely ball for Cyriel Dessers deserved a finish. 7

Cyriel Dessers:

Tough shift for the bulk of the game and then wasted a great chance after being played in by Cerny at 2-2. Never stopped working for the team. 7

Subs: Robin Propper (6) won a crucial 50-50 with Jota. IANIS HAGI (5) replaced the tiring Diomande to give Rangers fresh legs. Booked.

Tom Lawrence (4) clattered Maeda minutes after coming on.

Clinton Nsiala (4) on for closing stages at left-back.

Hamza Igamane (8) thunderous finish to win the game.
