February half term gets so expensive but my easy Aldi dinners all cost less than a QUID – your kids will love them too

A SAVVY mum shared her go-to recipes for stretching your grocery shop.

Her low-effort meals are created with fussy children in mind and will only set you back a quid per portion.

In her viral video, Instagram user Grace Mortimer (@_myfirstmeals) talked her 638,000 followers through five recipes.

“I have got five delicious new recipes that come in under a pound per portion from Aldi to help you through this February half-term,” she told her audience.

“I don’t know about you but I find that school holidays can just be a lot, there’s a lot going on, there’s a lot more thinking, planning, cooking, and it can be quite expensive.”

Grace decided to lay out a meal plan that was aimed at keeping costs low so parents have more money to spend on activities during the break.

First, she showed her viewers a creaming broccoli soup, which she topped with parmesan croutons.

The Instagrammer broke down the cost of the simple dish, which amounted to just 87p per serving.

Next, she constructed a fish finger sandwich on a bap, with tartar sauce, lettuce, and a side of oven chips.

This handy dinner only take minutes to make and costs just 97p per serving.

She also recommended a roasted cauliflower curry, which she created using all Aldi ingredients.

Served over a bed of white rice, this dish breaks down to just 96p per serving.

For a wholesome comfort dish, Grace made pizza-inspired loaded jacket potatoes.

Heaped with red peppers, red onions, and mozzarella cheese, each potato will only cost you £1.01 to create.

And for her personal favourite, the busy mum demonstrated how to make her “incredibly easy no-cook pasta sauce”.

She explained how the handy recipe is “just a case of popping things in a blender and pouring it over cooked pasta”.

For this recipe, she used one tin of chopped tomatoes, one tin of sliced carrots, and one jar of grilled peppers.

How to cut the cost of your grocery shop

SAVING on your shop can make a big difference to your wallet. Here are some tips from comparison site Money.co.uk about how you can cut the cost of your shopping bills:

  • Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
  • Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
  • Never shop hungry – you are far more likely to buy more food if your tummy is rumbling
  • Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
  • Use social media – follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
  • Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
  • Check the small print –  It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
  • Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards

She boiled 500 grams of pasta before draining it and setting it aside.

Next, Grace used a hand held blender to combine her three vegetables into a puree.

She then poured the pasta into an over dish and covered it in the homemade sauce.

After topping with mozzarella, she placed the pasta bake into the oven for 20 minutes or until the cheese began to bubble.

Grace revealed that she highly recommends trying out her pasta recipe.

Her personal favourite dish breaks down to just 89p per serving.

She explained that the portions are huge so they ensure “you’re getting quite a lot of bang for your buck”.

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

‘He’s an animal’ – Phil Jones names Man Utd wonderkid, 17, Ruben Amorim must turn to NOW to ease woes

PHIL JONES has singled out one academy gem at Manchester United to lead the team into a new era alongside the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo.

Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim was forced to turn to the kids for the Red Devils’ 1-0 defeat to Tottenham last weekend, naming EIGHT teenagers on the bench for the clash.

Jones reckons Ruben Amorim has plenty of talent in his youth ranks[/caption]

And although the academy kids’ day out was due to an injury crisis, former star Jones reckons that the bench is a sign of a promising future coming through the ranks at Carrington.

Jones, who has been working with the academy at United, singled out 17-year-old striker Chido Obi as one of the youngsters with enough talent to pull the club out of the slump.

Comparing the striker to some of the established players at Old Trafford, Jones labelled Obi as “an animal”.

Speaking to the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, he said: “Working in and around the academy and helping those young players develop, United have some really good and talented young players coming through.

“The squad had a lot of injuries against Tottenham and the bench was full of kids, but there were some talented players on that bench.

“People might not know a lot about them now, but they certainly will in the next few years.

“I think you look at Kobbie Mainoo, top player, you look at Chido who we’ve just signed from Arsenal, who’s an animal.

“You look at Amad who had a couple of really good loans, and I remember watching him winning it against Liverpool in extra time last season, and I had said at that time he’d play a huge part in the next season.

“I played with Amad for a year or two and you could see then that the quality he had was really good and really strong.

“As I said there’s a great crop of young players ready to be given the chance and integrated into the team.”

Chido Obi was the only player to get off the bench for Ruben Amorim‘s side during the defeat to Spurs.

The Danish teenager didn’t actually manage to get a touch of the ball during his three minute cameo, but is tipped for big things inside the game.

Obi arrived in Manchester this summer after signing from rivals Arsenal where he had smashed youth records with his goalscoring exploits.

He managed an astonishing 32 goals in just 18 U18 Premier League appearances for the Gunners last season, and has scored nine in 11 for United’s youth ranks this term.

Amorim will be hoping that Obi can replicate that goalscoring prowess at senior level too, with both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund misfiring up top at the moment.

Zirkzee has scored just once in his last 13 appearances, while Hojlund has now gone 15 consecutive games without finding the back of the net.

United face Everton in the early kick-off at Goodison Park on Saturday and boss Amorim could call upon Obi to try and turn things around given the club’s dire situation at the moment.

Dan Sheehan makes unexpected revelation about iconic pic with All Blacks legend after ‘getting good giggle out of lads’

DAN SHEEHAN has revealed he has lost his Jonah Lomu photograph – as he aims to make new memories against Wales tomorrow.

Leinster hooker Sheehan will captain Ireland for the first time as they aim to secure a Triple Crown and stay on course for a third Championship, and second Grand Slam in three years.

But he revealed he has lost the photo

But his elevation to captain in place of the injured Caelan Doris meant an old photograph of Sheehan as a four-year resurfaced – of the time he met All Blacks legend Lomu.

But the 26-year-old admitted he does not know when the originals are now.

He said: “There was a photo but I can’t remember where it is anymore. We moved house a few times so it’s probably been lost.

“I think my auntie was in a marketing agency at the time (for a Ballygowan ad with Lomu). They needed a kid willing to shave his head and my parents willingly put me forward!

“I have a vague memory of it. I was very young but I remember it being pretty cool. I remember rocking back into school the next day with the hair cut and getting a good giggle out of the lads.”

But Sheehan admitted that playing for Ireland, let alone captaining the team, were the furthest thing from his mind until more recently.

He added: “We were just a big rugby fan family. Dad would have got us in at a very young age, down in Bective.

“As the years went on I got a bit more serious but it wasn’t until I left school that I really took it seriously and saw that I might have a shot at going in pro.

“We were always a massive rugby family, it’s all we talked about and we’d be excited going to these games and watching these games on Saturdays, especially Six Nations

“It’s kind of weird to look back through eyes of a child and it’s nice to be here now and I’m absolutely loving everything that has to go with the team.”
