5 days agoworld NewsComments Off on Unique job opportunity on Scotland’s ‘Sunshine Island’ with £30k salary up for grabs
A RARE opportunity to live and work on Scotland’s “Sunshine Island” is now up for grabs.
Tiree, located within the Inner Hebrides, is renowned for being one of the sunniest places in the UK, thanks to the warmer temperatures brought by the Atlantic gulf stream and its long summer days.

Home to around 650 residents, the island now offers a unique chance to live and work there ahead of this year’s tourism season.
Two hotels on the island are seeking an “energetic and hands-on” manager to oversee operations across both properties – with “free accommodation” included.
The Tiree Lodge Hotel and the Scarinish Beach Hotel are just five minutes apart by car.
This full-time role involves working a minimum of 45 hours per week.
The advertised salary ranges between £30,000 and £34,000, depending on the applicant’s experience.
Key responsibilities include overseeing the overall management of both hotels, supervising and training hotel and restaurant staff, and ensuring consistently high standards of service.
The successful candidate will also be tasked with providing guests with a “clean and comfortable experience” by delivering “outstanding customer service.”
Prior hospitality management experience in a similar role is essential.
Applicants must also be “practical and hands-on” and capable of training and directing staff to maintain “consistently high standards.”
Tiree is famously flat and almost entirely treeless, a unique feature that contributes to its distinctive climate.
The open landscape allows for uninterrupted views of the horizon, while the lack of trees means it is often exposed to strong winds sweeping in from the Atlantic.
The island of Tiree, with its blindingly white sands and crashing surf, has earned the nickname “Hawaii of the North.”
It’s a destination that could make visitors feel as though they’ve been transported abroad, with its white-shell beaches and turquoise waters.
Balephuil Bay is a perfect spot for swimming and a firm favourite among surfers.
The island’s iconic beaches regularly host world-famous surfingcompetitions, including the Tiree Wave Classic – the longest-running professional windsurfing event in the world.

More than 65 million Americans have been issued cold weather alerts in 13 states from Texas to Minnesota.
The extreme weather has brought freezing rain to states including Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The flash floods in Kentucky have killed at least 11 people, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed on Monday.
“All of Kentucky still has standing water in different areas,” Beshear said in a storm briefing.
“Over 300 roads still impacted and closed, so everyone, be careful.”
The flooding was so extreme in Detroit, Michigan, that people had to be rescued from their homes, according to ABC affiliate WXYZ.
Frozen cars in Detroit were stuck in icy flood water standing at least two feet high, a terrifying video posted on X showed.
The chilly rain will be followed by snow flurries before record-low temperatures are expected to hit the US in the coming polar vortex.
A polar vortex is swirling cold air that moves from the North and South Poles.
The icy weather event, which is the tenth and coldest so far this winter, will move temperatures well below zero for states across the Midwest and East Coast.
Temperatures are expected to plunge to -45 degrees Fahrenheit with wind chill in areas including northeastern Montana and North Dakota.
The wind chill is expected to make the temperatures even lower,
Areas in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota face an “extreme cold warning,” according to the National Weather Service.
“Your face will fall off at these temperatures,” Meteorologist Ryan Maue warned on X.

KYLIE Jenner and Timothee Chalamet were spotted wearing matching luxury Cartier rings at the BAFTAs after recently sparking engagement rumors.
The lavish rings caught the eyes of fans as Kylie, 27, supported Best Actor nominee Timothee, 29, at the film awards in London on Sunday.

The unique rings were spotted on both Kylie and TimotheeGetty
Timothée was nominated for his role in A Complete Unknown.
The star, who played Bob Dylan in the biopic, could be seen holding Kylie’s hand as they sat together front row at The Royal Festival Hall.
He wore a stunning Cartier Panthère ring on his little finger from the luxury French jewler, which is crafted in white gold and encrusted with brilliant-cut diamonds.
Kylie could be seen wearing an identical ring on her right hand. The unmistakable band, with a price tag of $76,000, includes black onyx spots placed to mimic the panther’s fur, while the eyes are set with emeralds.
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star looked sensational on the night, in a sheer backless dress paired with silver heels.
Yet it was her ring that caught the attention of her army of fans.
They brought the conversation to social media site Reddit, with one sharing photos of the smitten couple at the event.
The fan captioned the pics: “Timothée and kylie’s matching panthère cartier rings…”
One more agreed: “Oh to have a matching cartier ring with your significant other!”
Kylie, who is already mom to two children, has been dating the Dune star for almost two years.
But she has never been engaged before.
She has been in several high-profile relationships though, including with Tyga, Travis Scott, with whom she shares daughter Stormi and son Aire, and now Timothée.
BIG NIGHT OUT
Kylie put on a loved-up display with the Wonka actor, who was seen affectionately holding her hand, before he leaned to whisper in her ear.
It comes after she was seen supporting her man at the Berlin Film Festival last week.
Kylie and Timothee were first linked romantically in April 2023 and they tried to keep their relationship quiet for month.
Yet her attendance by his side throughout awards season has shown just how strong they are.
The superstar couple have also set tongues wagging that they’re ready to take the next big step in their relationship.
Kylie sparked engagement rumors when she rocked a massive diamond ring at Santa Barbara Film Festival last week.
It wasn’t the first time she has sent fans into a frenzy over a potential engagement.
It comes after Kylie responded to pregnancy rumors with a romantic dinner with Timothée just a couple of weeks ago, while drinking wine at dinner.
Speculation has been rife that the pair could be expecting a child together after a video she made with her kids.
Appearing at the start of the video, she sat with a huge shopping bag covering her stomach, which fans said could have been her way of hiding the pregnancy.
The clip went viral online, with one fan speculating: “COVERING HER BELLY AND THE PREGNANCY NOSE NAURRRRRR.”
Kylie has been guilty of hiding her pregnancy in the past, only revealing daughter Stormi once she’d given birth in February 2018.
She did the same again with son Aire, where she hid in baggy clothes, avoiding public appearances and didn’t confirm the pregnancy until after he arrived in February 2022.

CHILLING new telescope photos of the “city killer” asteroid hurtling towards earth at 30,000mph have been released.
The chance of the space rock smashing into Earth when it loops around in 7 years’ time is estimated at a 1-in-48 chance – or just over two per cent.
Catalina Sky Survey/ LPL/Dr. Wierzchos/ Bryce BolinAsteroid 2024 YR4 was faint but can be made out as the bright white smudge in the telescope photo[/caption]
Catalina Sky Survey/ LPL/Dr. Wierzchos/ Bryce BolinThese new photos were taken by the Gemini South Telescope in Chile[/caption]
APA more zoomed out photo showing the asteroid surrounded by stars[/caption]
The striking new images of asteroid YR4 2024 were captured by a space telescope in Chile on February 7, and show it in the most detail yet.
They were taken through the lens of the Gemini South Telescope – a powerful, 26-foot device in the Andes that specialises in staring deep into space.
Bryce Bolin, a NASA astronomer involved in the photo operation, told Space.com: “Only a few asteroids have been studied like this.”
The grainy images show 2024 YR4 as a bright white smudge against the night sky.
The rock was around 37 million miles from Earth when it was snapped.
Photographing a fast-moving object from such a distance is incredibly difficult, and required the team’s full expertise.
Bryce explained that they “took 12 200-second long exposures in the Red Band [the wavelength of red light] and tracked the motion of the asteroid”.
He said the task was difficult because the asteroid was relatively faint – meaning it could only be picked up using a very large telescope.
Another challenge was presented by the moon, which was 70 per cent full.
The moon’s illumination caused background lighting that made it even harder to see the asteroid.
Physicists will be keeping a close eye on YR4 over the next seven years as it cycles through its orbit around the sun, and are eager to learn as much about it as they can.
They currently believe it is between 40m and 100m across, and if it hits earth could produce an impact equivalent to 8 megatons of TNT.
The “city-killer” name comes from scientists’ prediction that the blast would blow a crater the size of a city into the Earth’s crust.
David Rankin, an operations engineer for the University of Arizona, said that if the moon was hit we would be able to see the strike with our own eyes.
He said: “There is the possibility this would eject some material back out that could hit the Earth, but I highly doubt it would cause any major threat.
“It would be very visible from Earth.”
Bryce said that, despite the chance of danger, he finds YR4 “to be extremely exciting” due to “the scientific potential of studying such a small asteroid in high detail”.
He added that this could be the final “chance we have to observe the asteroid from Gemini” before it approaches again in 2028.
The rock is expected to fade around mid-March, making it more difficult to detect from the ground, but passes nearby Earth around once every four years.
The approach after next is when it could collide with Earth.
Soon after being discovered in late December, the asteroid rocketed to the top of NASA risk list – and further study has only increased the calculated chance of impact.

A FIRE that destroyed the Chiltern Firehouse and forced 100 people to evacuate erupted from a pizza oven.
The celebrity hotspot in Marylebone, central London, was engulfed in flames on Friday evening, with more than 100 firefighters being brought in to tackle the towering inferno.

London Fire Brigade100 people were evacuated from the building as firefighters tackled the inferno[/caption]
Now, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) has confirmed the fire was caused by burning wood that fell from a pizza oven and then ignited the void between the basement and the ground floor.
Firefighters were seen tackling the blaze, which struck just hours before Valentine’s Day dinner service, at the luxury hotel and restaurant as darkness fell on the capital.
LFB said in a statement today: “Twenty fire engines and around 125 firefighters spent Valentine’s Day tackling a fire at a hotel on Chiltern Street in Marylebone.
“The fire is believed to have been accidental and was caused by burning wood falling from a pizza oven and igniting the void between the basement and ground floor.”
The fire and rescue service confirmed that the blaze began in the ground floor restaurant before spreading to the roof of the four-storey building.
Both the roof and third floor were destroyed by the inferno, while parts of the second and ground floors were also damaged by the fire, LFB confirmed.
The emergency service added that two 32-metre tall turntable ladders from Paddington and Soho Fire Stations were used as water towers at the scene to help fight the blaze from above.
LFB said its Drone Team was also deployed to assist with an aerial view of the fire.
Assistant Commissioner Paul McCourt, Incident Commander at the scene, said: “Crews worked incredibly hard for over eight hours in arduous conditions.
“Presented with a complex fire in a historically significant building, formerly Manchester Square Fire Station, firefighters successfully contained the fire to one property, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring properties.
“Around 100 people evacuated the building before the Brigade arrived and thankfully there have been no reports of any injuries.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank our crews, Control Officers, fire safety officers and support staff who worked to resolve the incident.”
Emergency services were first called at 2.52pm on Friday, with crews from across the city racing to the rapidly worsening blaze.
Firefighters from Euston, Soho, Paddington, West Hampstead, Kensington, Chelsea, and surrounding fire stations were deployed, and the blaze was finally under control by 8.07pm.

The inferno has shocked the local community as well as many that worked at the hotel.
A worker said: “Every floor has been destroyed.
“There’s no roof left – it has basically collapsed in on itself.
“Only the ground floor is still somewhat intact.
“We’ve heard it will be at least a year before we can even think about opening again.”
At the time of the horrific fire, a shaken guest had told The Sun: “I stepped outside and saw thick black smoke pouring out of the windows.
“It was like a disaster movie.”
Andre Balazs, owner of the Chiltern Firehouse, said on Friday: “We are grateful to confirm that no one was hurt, and our guests and staff safely evacuated.
“It is with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation that we watched a remarkable 120 fire fighters from over 14 stations rapidly descend on what they told me was a hugely sentimental building for so many of them.”
He added: “We know in fact one of those who rushed to the Chiltern Firehouse this evening had been stationed in the building when it was a fire station 30 years ago.
“I am truly grateful to all of them as I am sure that this is not the Valentine’s Day evening they had in mind.
“In the meantime, the Chiltern Firehouse will remain closed until further notice.”
Chiltern Firehouse, both a hotel and restaurant, is incredibly popular with both A-list celebrities and royals.
The enterprise occupies a Grade II listed building that was formerly a fire station.
The luxury hotel, which has 26 suites, opened in 2013 and was once dubbed as “London’s hottest celebrity hangout”.
Balazs also owns two hotels in the US: Sunset Beach Hotel on Shelter Island, New York, and Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, California.
Celebrities and royals ranging from Lewis Capaldi to Princess Beatrice have been spotted on the premises of the luxury hotel and restaurant in recent months.

THE first patients will not be treated in Ireland’s new €2 billion National Children’s Hospital until 2026, the Health Minister has been told.
Last year, former Health Minister Stephen Donnelly met with the parent company of BAM to express the Government’s frustrations at the repeated delays and cost overruns.
The former Fianna Fail minister said that BAM’s owners would stand over the latest timeline that would see the completed hospital handed over to the health service this summer.
However, a briefing document provided to the new Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill claims that the first patients won’t be treated in the hospital until 2026.
This is due to advice that staff and patient services should not be transferred to the new hospital during winter due to health risks.
The briefing said: “In line with international best practice, Children’s Health Ireland has advised that migration cannot be undertaken in winter due to clinical risks.”
The hospital is currently in the “snagging” phase, however this is expected to carry on for a number of months.
A commissioning of the hospital is then expected to take six months with more than 4,000 staff being moved across.
The new Health Minister Jennifer Carroll McNeill has been urged to “grasp control” of the project and ensure children can be treated there safely as soon as possible.
Sinn Fein’s David Cullinane said: “Previous ministers have tried to pass the buck to the development board, and the board has a serious role, but there is also responsibility on the Minister to get the hospital finished.
“This will be a major priority of the new health committee. The committee and the Dail will need to be assured that substantial progress has been made and continues to be made to open the hospital next year.”

Ant often showed off the rural retreat on social media as he posted snaps of his five children, who he shares with wife Emilie.
It is described as an ‘exceptional residence’ and an ‘exquisite home’ – the floor plans detailing the property layout with Ant’s standalone gym.
The particulars also report that the couple had secured planning permission for a rear extension.
It is now on the marked for £1.5m and the forced sale of his ‘matrimonial’ home has been reported in a liquidation update for his company Sway and Starting.
Filed at Companies House, a Progress Report, states: “During the period a settlement was entered into with the director whereby he would pay £300,000 in full and final settlement of his overdrawn Directors Loan Account.
“The director failed to adhere to the payment plan and only one instalment was received.
“A statutory demand was served on the Director with a view to petitioning for his bankruptcy. He subsequently agreed to sell his matrimonial home and provide the remainer of the amount owed under the settlement agreement.”
Sway and Starting went into liquidation in December 2022, the progress report filed by liquidators Begbies Traynor the third insolvency document to be drawn up.

Lingard, 32, had his most successful years at United playing for the Special One, who now works as the boss of Fenerbahce.

EPAHe revealed an incredible gesture which boosted his confidence[/caption]
RexLingard, who now plays for Seoul FC, revealed how emotional he was after his last training session at Man Utd[/caption]
The attacking midfielder contributed to 20 goals (13 goals and seven assists) in all competitions in the 2017/18 season which saw him book a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2018 World Cup.
Lingard, who now plays for Seoul FC in South Korea, revealed how “chill” Mourinho used to be with him.
In an interview with The Independent, Lingard said: “Mourinho was so chilled sometimes.
“He used to FaceTime me from his room in the Lowry [hotel], ask me what I’m doing. I thought that was a real confidence boost.
“During that season, leading up to the 2018 World Cup, Jose played me most games… it was a big season.”
Lingard – who had just 12 caps for the Three Lions before the tournament – thanked Southgate for the faith he showed in him by giving him a starting berth in Russia.
He started all but two games there – dead-rubbers against Belgium at the end of the group stage and in the third-place play-off respectively – while scoring once and setting up two goals.
Lingard continued: “And you know, going to the World Cup, you’re not expecting to start.

“But Gareth Southgate had a lot of faith in me from a young age, and I played every game.”
The 2018 World Cup was England‘s best performance in a World Cup finals since 1966 and restored pride in the national team.
However, Lingard still believes it was a case of “what might have been” saying he thinks he and his team-mates should have beaten Croatia in the semi-final.
Lingard’s career arguably peaked that summer and that season, with his attacking returns the following season dipping to only eight goals and assists.
A loan spell to West Ham where he scored nine goals in 16 games looked set to be the career revival he was after stuttering at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But he would return to Old Trafford at the end of the spell only to spend his time as a highly-paid benchwarmer.
Lingard explained: “Being in the same environment for a long time… it kind of stifles you.In football, you’ve always got ups and downs. You’ve got to be mentally strong.
“And, you know, sometimes at United, I wasn’t. Things happen off the pitch that you can’t really control… it affects you on the pitch.
“I spoke to Ole and a couple of staff members and they understood, because they’re human as well.
“It comes to a certain point where, when you’re not playing regularly, you’re not just going to sit there for the money.”
Lingard added: “I was really dialled in and locked in at that time. The way I played, when you come back to your home club, you’re expecting to play. Obviously, that didn’t happen.
“You get frustrated. My application in training each day was always 100 per cent, you know… But, you come to a certain time where you need to leave.
“Playing for that badge week in, week out is one of the best feelings I’ve had.”
He eventually left his boyhood club in 2022 to join Nottingham Forest on a one-year deal, though a lack of playing time there, which Lingard puts down to injury, saw him leave the City Ground after one season.
Lingard then spent half a year without a club as he was hit by an 18-month driving ban after being found guilty of drink-driving before tragically losing his grandmother in November.
On the tough period, he said: “I was home with my family and my nan wasn’t well.
“I felt at the time it was just God saying, ‘Be with your family, enjoy the family time’.
“Then, going to Dubai for a training camp in December and getting ready for January. Just being strict with that. I feel like it all just played a part.”
Lingard eventually signed for Seoul FC in February 2024.
He had a tough start to life in Asia before undergoing knee surgery but found form following his return, scoring six goals and adding three assists to end the campaign.

Where is it?
Sat within The Mailbox, the hotel is very close to the city centre.
For shoppers, it is so well placed that you couldn’t get any closer to the retail action, without setting up camp inside Harvey Nichols.
What is it like?
It has a fascinating history.
The site used to be the location of the Royal Mail’s main sorting office for Birmingham.
What is there to do at the hotel?
This hotel is foodie central.
Stay for breakfast (one of the best I’ve ever had) with dishes such as Earl Grey poached fruits, fresh pastries and homemade granola.
Or opt for the cooked-to-order hot choices – I had tasty eggs Benedict.
And when you tire of the chic shops in The Mailbox, trendy Digbeth, with its arts venues, independent shops and funky open-air bars, is only 20 minutes away.
For years to come I will be telling people about the truffle and Parmesan fries and chocolate molten pudding with peanut butter centre.
Do not leave without getting stuck into the extensive cocktail list – the smoked pineapple margarita took centre stage for me.
What are the rooms like?
There are 193 rooms, spread over seven floors. We enjoyed a plush standard room with a super king-size bed.
Every detail in the room was well thought out, from the industrial-looking fittings to the neon Pop Art on the walls – and it had a Nespresso coffee machine.
Is the hotel family friendly and accessible?
If you’re visiting with kids you could book an interconnecting room.
And there are accessible rooms, ramps at the entrance and a lift.

A SCOTS mental health nurse who sparked a mass brawl in a nightclub was fined £640 today.
Rebecca Frew, 29, repeatedly lashed out at Craig Munn in Glasgow city centre’s Kong on October 14 2023.
john kirkby News group newspapersShe appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court[/caption]
Frew, of Uddingston, Lanarkshire, initially slapped Mr Munn who had been out with friends earlier that night at a Rangers fan event.
The attack sparked a large fight in the nightclub which landed Frew’s friend Andrew Chalmers in hospital.
Bystander Steven Boulton, 33, had struck Mr Chalmers repeatedly on the head with a plastic cup during the melee, leaving him with a wound which was closed with glue.
Frew briefly left with her injured pal but returned to the scene to retrieve her belongings when she struck Mr Munn with her boot causing a scratch to his head.
The brawl took place four years after the mum-of-one reportedly saw the face of her son’s granddad on his baby scan picture.
Frew claimed her ex-partner Craig Graham’s dad Stephen Graham was their son’s “guardian angel” after she was told the chances of conceiving a child was low.
Stephen was rushed to hospital on the same day that Frew found out that she was pregnant and he passed away 11 days later.
Frew claimed that she saw Stephen’s face on a baby scan picture after his death.
Boulton, of Bellshill, Lanarkshire, meantime pled guilty before trial to assaulting Mr Chalmers to his injury and he was ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work at today’s sentencing.
The court heard that Frew and friend Mr Chalmers arrived at Kong around midnight but became separated.
Frew spoke to Mr Munn, his friends and cousin who had arrived at the nightclub after attending a Rangers event.
Mr Munn’s group and Frew spoke about people they were familiar with in her local area.
CCTV played to the court showed Frew smack Mr Munn to the head before a wider fight occurred among those in attendance including Mr Chalmers.
Footage showed Mr Chalmers being led into a different room and was initially followed by Frew who returned to the bar area to collect her jacket and bag.
Moments later, Frew was seen striking Mr Munn again who was nearby – this time with her boot which she had earlier removed.
Prosecutor Emma Sangray put it to Frew in her evidence that it was the heel of her boot which was used to hit Mr Munn.
She replied: “I don’t think it was the heel as I was holding the heel – it was the front part of the boot.”
Mr Munn was given first aid at the scene for a wound to his head but did not require hospital treatment.
Frew claimed that Mr Munn had made a negative remark before she attacked him on both occasions.
Miss Sangray stated: “I suggest that he did not say a word to you – you went to the side of him and caught him off guard at the side of the head with your shoe.”
Frew: “I would say that’s not what happened.”
The fiscal also suggested to Frew that she went “looking for a fight” which she refuted.
Philip Cohen, defending Frew, told the sentencing that his client lost her job as a result of media attention brought about by the case.
Haroun Malik, defending Boulton, stated “My client understands the serious nature of the charge.”
