I talk to my dead mother before every match – I truly believe it helps us, admits Champions  League manager

NICKY HAYEN has revealed he speaks to his deceased mother before every game – and it’s a pre-match ritual which appears to be paying off.

The Club Brugge boss, 44, is preparing to face Atalanta in Tuesday’s vital Champions League playoff.

The former Haverfordwest coach has said he talks to his deceased mother before each game[/caption]

Hayen was thrust into the Brugge job last March, initially on an interim basis.

The 44-year-old guided the team to a Belgian championship and penned a permanent deal in the summer.

Club Brugge beat Atalanta 2-1 in the first leg of the playoff tie last week.

Hayen is confident his fearless side can come away from Bergamo with a famous win.

But prior to kick-off, he revealed an emotional ritual which he holds before every game.

He explained: “Before the match I always talk to my mother, who passed away four years ago.

“It was much too early.

“Last year before the [Belgian league] playoffs I told her we wanted to do something crazy, and in the end winning the title was the result.

“Am I deeply religious? No, but I do feel that it is something for me. I must believe there is something.”

Hayen spent the majority of his playing career in Belgium’s top divisions, first at Sint-Truiden and then RBC Roosendaal.

He hung up his boots in 2014, embarking on several coaching roles to learn the ropes.

Just three years ago, Hayen coached at Haverfordwest County in the Welsh semi-pro Cymru Premier.

He is now a Champions League manager – and catching the eye of scouts around Europe.

Brugge are playing in their fifth consecutive Champions League season.

And Hayen admits it could be a “difficult evening” ahead in Italy, despite his side arriving with an aggregate lead.

He continued: “Atalanta will definitely play more attacking. At home they also want to be more dominant.

“They also have the team for that, so we expect a difficult evening.

“We have to play our own game and especially show the tactical discipline of last week.

“My plan for the match hasn’t changed because it was 2-1 last week.

“We did very well, because Atalanta is a very strong team. I believe in my squad.

“We play with a lot of guts in this Champions League, but that mustn’t turn into naivety.”

Love Island final week couple ‘heading for a split’ as fans spot girls’ ‘sour face’ in final

LOVE Island fans are convinced one of the final week couples are “heading for a split” after spotting a key sign in the final.

Last night saw Casey O’Gorman and Gabby Allen be crowned All Stars champs – but one couple could already be heading for splitsville.

Last night’s All Stars final, was one of the most chaotic Love Island finale’s in history.

Tension was rising throughout the show, after multiple villa feuds.

One of these fall outs included Harriett Blackmore and Ronnie Vint being dumped just one day before the final by their ex Islanders.

Last night, Harriett looked visibly upset throughout the show, and this didn’t go unnoticed by fans.

In fact, some viewers have now come up with a theory this could be a sign that her and Ronnie could be the first couple to split.

Taking to Reddit this fan wrote: “Harriett looks so upset and I think it’s because she’d made a deal with herself to get back with Ronnie just to win because she was SO adamant she wasn’t coming in for that and I think now she’s thinking ‘it was all for nothing.’

“I expect a split soon because she wouldn’t close herself off for ages, was still saying she’d entertain new people AFTER he said he loved her, and it was always Ronnie saying ‘oh well we got each other, I come in and got what I wanted’.

“But Harriett never said the same…..”

MISSING OUT ON THE FINAL

The couple were brutally dumped, just ahead of last night’s big final.

A group of ex-All Stars Islanders returned to vote on who shouldn’t make it to grand finale.

Ronnie told the boys it was a “sore” way to go after he and his villa partner were left raging at many of the reasoning’s given by their fellow Islanders.

Most of the dumped contestants cited the fact Harriett and Ronnie split weeks after leaving the villa last summer as the main reason for giving them the boot – something that the couple rejected as a valid reason.

WINNER TAKES IT ALL

Meanwhile, Casey and Gabby were crowned victorious in a nail-biting finale.

They came out on top as they went head-to-head with the bookies’ favourites Grace Jackson and Luca Bish.

They also beat fellow finalists Curtis Pritchard and Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu who came in third place and Catherine Agbaje and Omar Nyame who were revealed in fourth place.

Also in the running were Elma Pazar and Sammy Root who came in fifth.

Host Maya Jama pulled out all the stops in a daring cut-out dress as she announced the winning pair.

FINDING LOVE

Gabby‘s All Stars journey saw her going from being paired up with her Love Island ex Marcel, who cheated on her, to winning the show.

The beauty first shot to fame in the ITV2 reality series back in 2017.

She was then swept off her feet by surprise bombshell Casey – who was back for his third stint in the series.

The couple went from strength to strength but looked completely stunned as their names were called, sharing a celebratory hug as fireworks erupted behind them.

Speaking to Maya before they were crowned, Casey gushed over Gabby and insisted he had already won.

He told Maya after finding out they were in the final two: “I absolutely adore her (Gabby).

“She has just blown me off my socks since I got here.

“As soon as that first conversation I had with her, it was game over for me.”

Nestle discontinues popular Rowntree’s sweets after just two years on shelves

NESTLE have pulled a new type of Rowntree’s sweets just two years after launch.

The confectionery giant launched Randoms Squidgy Swirls in 2022.

Nestle make some of the UK’s best loved sweets including Kit Kat, Smarties, Polos and Quality Street.[/caption]

Only to confirm in 2024 that the popular sweets were no longer being made.

The shock announcement came after a fan tweeted the food and drink company asking after the whereabouts of her partner’s favourite sweets.

Writing to them directly on X (formerly Twitter), they wrote: “@NestleUKI my boyfriend is obsessed with Rowntree’s Randoms Squidgy Swirls.. are they discontinued?!

“Can’t find them anywhere!”

A spokesperson for Nestle replied directly with the bad news.

“The Randoms Squidgy Swirls have already been discontinued,” they confirmed.

According to Nestle, Squidgy Swirls were a new take on the standard clear fruity gummy Randoms.

The 140g Squidgy Swirls were yoghurt fruity chews in apple, strawberry and blackcurrant flavours.

The sweets came in a variety pack of shapes including squirrels, moons, cute little pugs and dinosaurs.

Writing when the Squidgy Swirls were first launched in 2022, one reviewer wrote: “Overall, pretty tasty, I’m not sure I’d get them again but they’re a nice variation.”

Another said: “We were thinking the taste would be something along the lines of those Campino sweets you used to get as they tasted both fruity and creamy.”

Adding: “These were a tad disappointing.”

It’s not the first time Nestle has axed products from its Rowntrees Randoms product line.

Confectionery lovers had to say goodbye to the Randoms Foamies sweets after they quickly disappeared from shop shelves in December 2023.

The 140g pink-coloured bags were a fan favourite for many but they are no longer available to buy from UK shops and supermarkets.

No official reason was given at the time for their sudden disappearance and understandably many people were left heartbroken.

But after one person on social media questioned the decision to stop selling the Foamies, Rowntrees said that they weren’t “as popular as others in the range”.

Another sweet discontinued by Nestle were Tooty Frooties, shelved in 2019.

Nestlé confirmed that after 50 years in production, they were pulling the sweets from their range.

A Nestlé spokesman said: “Sweet tastes and trends change over the years and Tooty Frooties have become much less popular in the decades since their launch.

“In 2019, people prefer the jelly and foamy sweets you find in Rowntree’s Randoms and that’s why we’ve decided to concentrate on new products under the Randoms brand.”

Axing within the Randoms brand comes as other fan favourites were discontinued by the sweets giant in the last 12 months.

In February 2024, Nestlé announced it was cutting Breakaway and Yorkie biscuit bars from its range of products.

In June, the company said its popular 2021 limited-edition Yorkie Orange chocolate bars were being pulled from shelves.

Then in November last year they revealed both Caramac and Animal bars were being axed.

And in January 2025, the company confirmed it had discontinued its vegan KitKat due to dwindling demand from customers.

Nestle launches new chocolate bar flavour

But it’s not all bad news for those with a sweet tooth.

Eagle-eyed Nestle fans have recently spotted a new Kit Kat flavour, never before seen on UK shelves.

The Mocha flavoured Kit Kat is a collaboration with Nescafe, the instant coffee maker also owned by Nestle, and is inspired by its mocha chocolate sachets.

Mocha is a coffee drink that combines espresso, chocolate, and milk.

Shoppers spotted the snack on the aisle of their local Sainsbury’s, and were quick to share their excitement.

One person said they “needed” to try the new treat, while another said they would “pick some up next time I see them”.

The product is new to UK supermarkets and retails for around £2.25.

Sainsbury’s is currently selling the chocolate for £2.20, with other supermarkets not yet appearing to stock the product.

How to save money on chocolate

We all love a bit of chocolate from now and then, but you don't have to break the bank buying your favourite bar.

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how to cut costs…

Go own brand – if you’re not too fussed about flavour and just want to supplant your chocolate cravings, you’ll save by going for the supermarket’s own brand bars.

Shop around – if you’ve spotted your favourite variety at the supermarket, make sure you check if it’s cheaper elsewhere.

Websites like Trolley.co.uk let you compare prices on products across all the major chains to see if you’re getting the best deal.

Look out for yellow stickers – supermarket staff put yellow, and sometimes orange and red, stickers on to products to show they’ve been reduced.

They usually do this if the product is coming to the end of its best-before date or the packaging is slightly damaged.

Buy bigger bars – most of the time, but not always, chocolate is cheaper per 100g the larger the bar.

So if you’ve got the appetite, and you were going to buy a hefty amount of chocolate anyway, you might as well go bigger.

Moment Mastermind contestant left in disbelief after Celtic v Rangers title question blunder

A MASTERMIND quizzer was left shaking her head in disbelief after being tested on Celtic and Rangers’ title history.

The black chair contestant made the error – which would’ve had Hoops fans screaming at the telly – during last night’s episode of the hit BBC quiz show.

Quiz buff Aine McMenamin, a classics teacher in schools, had selected Taylor Swift as her specialist subject.

She stormed her way to 19 points as host Clive Myrie quizzed her over two rounds on Swift and general knowledge.

But one sport question in particular gave her some bother.

In her second round on the hotseat, she was posed a Scottish football question about Celtic and Rangers’ title rivalry.

Clive asked: “Which football club secured their 12th men‘s title in 13 seasons when they won the Scottish Premiership in May 2024?”

After a brief pause, Aine answered “Rangers” while shaking her head.

After being given the correct answer, Celtic, she raised her eyebrows in disbelief.

But she went on to have the last laugh at the end of the show.

Despite her mistake, Aine claimed victory on the night as the other contestants couldn’t match her 19-point tally.

It means she will return to the show to take part in a semi-final.

Speaking on the show, she said: “In the school that I work at, I run a general knowledge club.

“So I came on the show to try and inspire them.

“I think they’ll find it sort of amusing to see their teacher on TV.

“When I was a child I used to call Mastermind the scary chair show.

“Having sat in the chair I can say it’s more comfortable than I thought it would be.”
