Mercedes, 33, told the New York Times her dad had died in Los Angeles surrounded by family and friends.
But Val had suffered other health battles in the past, as he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, for which he underwent major surgery.
The actor had a tracheotomy, which impacted his ability to speak, but he managed to recover from the cancer.
He first rose to prominence in the 1980s, before landing the role of fighter pilot Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun opposite Tom Cruise.
He went on to portray Batman in the 1995 cult classic film Batman Forever.
Pneumonia is a type of chest infection, typically caused by bacteria or viruses entering the lungs.
Antibiotics are given when the cause is bacterial, while viral pneumonia usually goes away itself with rest and plenty of fluids.
It can affect people of all ages but people who are older, ill or have a weakened immune system can be more vulnerable.
Most people will succumb to the chest infection during winter months and will be completely cured with prompt treatment.
But in some cases, pneumonia can be life threatening.
More than 25,000 people die from pneumonia in the UK each year, according to Asthma + Lung UK.
Early symptoms of pneumonia may be confused with cold or flu, as they include a cough, tiredness and a high temperature.
But other telltale symptoms, such as chest pain or wheezing, will indicate that the infection is more serious than a common cold.
You should take pneumonia seriously even if you’re young and fit, Asthma + Lung stresses.

RexHe’s also known for portraying Batman[/caption]
Here are six common symptoms of pneumonia:
Having a cough – your cough might be dry, or you might cough up yellow, green, brown or blood-stained mucus
Feeling weak and tired and generally ill
Feeling like you cannot catch your breath
Lack of appetite
Fast heartbeat
Sweating and shivering
Symptoms may come on suddenly over one or two days, or more slowly over a few days.
Not everyone will experience the above symptoms.
Others may include:
Wheezing
Confusion – this is particularly common in older people
A key change from a normal respiratory illness, such as a cold or the flu, to pneumonia is the development of significant shortness of breath and chest pain.
Unlike typical colds or flus, pneumonia often causes difficulty breathing and a sharp or stabbing pain in the chest that worsens with deep breaths or coughing.
If these symptoms appear, it’s important to seek medical advice promptly.
Asthma + Lung notes that you should call 999 if:
You’re struggling to breathe
You’re coughing up blood
Your lips, tongue or face turn blue
You feel cold and sweaty, and your skin is pale or blotchy
You have a rash that does not fade when you roll a glass over it
You collapse or faint
You become confused or very sleepy
You’ve stopped peeing or are peeing a lot less than normal
How serious can pneumonia be?
Most people will recover from pneumonia in about two to four weeks.
But you may need to go to hospital if you’re over the age of 65, have cardiovascular disease or a long-term heart condition or you become very unwell.
Babies or young children may need hospital treatment too.
Dr Andrew Whittamore, Clinical Lead at Asthma + Lung UK and a practising GP, previously told Sun Health: “Young children, those aged over 65 and those with existing lung conditions such as asthma or COPD, can be more prone to chest infections.
“They can also be more serious among these groups because the inflammation causes narrowing of the airways making it harder to breathe.
“Also, in young children and older people it may be harder for them to get rid of mucus because their body’s defences may not be working as well in the lungs.”
How to reduce your risk of pneumonia
Pneumonia can strike anyone and it’s not always possible to prevent it.
But several vaccines could protect you or your child from infections that can cause it.
They include:
Pneumococcal vaccine – recommended for babies, adults over 65 and people at higher risk of pneumococcal infections
Flu vaccine – recommended during pregnancy, for adults over 65, people with certain long-term health conditions and those at high risk of catching or passing on flu
RSV vaccine – recommended for adults aged 75 to 79, and during pregnancy (from 28 weeks onwards) to help protect your baby after they’re born
COVID-19 vaccine – a seasonal vaccine that’s recommended for people at increased risk from COVID-19

THIS Morning host Cat Deeley welled up as a guest held her dead sister’s hands after they were donated to another woman.
The incredible, moving moment left Cat and co-host Ben Shephard stunned as they admitted they had no idea the procedure to transfer hands could be done.

ITVCorinne Hutton received Julie Wild’s hands after nearly dying from sepsis[/caption]
Deborah Gosling appeared in the studio to explain how her late twin sister Julie’s hands have transformed the life of recipient Corinne Sutton, who lost hers to sepsis in 2013 along with her legs.
After Julie tragically and suddenly died from a brain bleed six years ago, Deborah and healthcare worker Julie’s twin sons agreed to donate her organs and hands.
Surgeons worked for 12 hours to attach Julie’s hands to Corinne’s body and she now has almost full feeling in them, and they have transformed her life.
Deborah said of her sibling: “She was absolutely perfect, my best friend.”
She recalled how Julie had complained of a severe headache on the day of her death, before slurring her words and becoming confused.
They rushed to hospital and while she was being checked in Julie went into a seizure, vomited and became unconscious.
At this time, a specialist nurse asked Deborah about organ and limb donation to which she agreed.
Corinne then spoke about how the hands had changed her life following a bout of pneumonia that developed into near fatal septic shock.
She waited four-and-a-half years for the perfect hands to present themselves.
“I get so excited about my hands,” said Corinne. “I’m so proud of them, but never ever do I think of my hands without thinking of Julie and what the other family went through.”
Deborah added: “Absolutely amazing. When you die your organs and limbs are no good to you and if it can change someone’s life, evidently.”
The pair then held hands and Deborah said: “They’re still Julie’s hands to me. It’s amazing. They couldn’t have gone to anybody better.”

LIVERPOOL icon Dirk Kuyt has admitted his infamous Merseyside derby tackle was “crazy” and he should have been sent off.
The shocking challenge was made during an ill-tempered fixture in 2007.

Liverpool beat Everton 2-1 as David Moyes’ side went down to nine-men after red cards to Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville.
Kuyt scored both goals for the Reds, including a dramatic 92nd minute penalty to win it.
The strike was highly controversial as the Dutchman somehow escaped an early bath for a reckless and wild lunge on Neville.
Kuyt went in two-footed above the Everton skipper’s knee but was given just a yellow by referee Mark Clattenburg.
Opening up on the moment, Kuyt told The Telegraph: “I was very lucky to come away from that because if I had a red card, I would not have managed to score the winning goal.
“It’s crazy when you play these kinds of games because there’s a lot of adrenaline, a lot of emotion.
“I flew through the air and thank God there was no VAR there at the time.
“When I was in the air, I knew I was way too late and I was on the point of doing something crazy.

“I tried to hold my legs inside me just to be lucky not to touch him. I think I was very lucky not to get the red card.”
Liverpool face Everton tonight and tempers could flare again after a huge bust-up at the end of their 2-2 thriller just seven weeks ago.

CORONATION Street’s Mick and Lou are hiding a massive secret that will be revealed before their exits this summer – their son.
The nightmare neighbours, played by actors Joe Layton and Farrell Hegarty, have caused chaos since arriving on the show earlier this year.

ITVBrody (right) has been terrorising Dylan (left) in the STC – and he’ll soon be revealed as Mick and Lou’s son[/caption]
And while The Sun has now confirmed they will both leave the show in the summer – they are set to leave a lasting reminder – their son.
It can now be revealed that their son will turn out to be another newcomer to the show – thug Brody.
A source said: “It’s going to be a big shock when Brody is revealed to be Mick and Lou’s son but it’s clear the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
“He’s been terrorising Dylan in the Secure Training Centre just like Mick’s been terrorising the residents on the cobbles.
“But there’s going to be a massive twist that reveals Brody isn’t Mick’s son – he’s really Kit Green’s.
“It’s going to be explosive as Kit discovers the truth and finds out he’s had a kid for years.”
Brody is played by former Hollyoaks star Ryan Mulvey, while Kit is played by his former Hollyoaks co-star Jacob Roberts.
Actors Joe and Farell will bow out of the show just six months after joining this summer in shock exits.
A Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed their exits and said: “Mick and Lou were brought into the show to cause chaos on the cobbles in the build up to a major storyline in the summer and they are already making their presence felt.
“Joe and Farrell were contracted for a specific length of time, some characters come in for a long time and some like Mick and Lou are brought to pass through and leave a trail of destruction behind them.
Coronation Street's 2024 shock exits
Corrie has said goodbye to several cast members this year. Let's break down who's left the famous soap:
The youngster moved to live with her dad Dom Everett, who went back on the £10,000 bribe Eliza’s grandfather Stu had offered to keep him out of her life.
The Weatherfield legend left his family and loved ones behind on Boxing Day, 2023, when his wife Carla Connor encouraged him to travel around the world with a friend.
Simon’s been on a downward spiral ever since and his exit could end in tragedy.
Alya Nazir is set to leave the cobbles as actress Sair Khan prepares to go on maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child.
It looks likely she’ll be heading to Dublin after securing a lucrative new job, leaving her colleague and fling Adam Barlow behind.
Show stalwart Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, is taking a break to star in the Sister Act The Musical UK tour. She will be back filming in May once her dates on the tour come to an end.
Her character left the Street after her son Jason broke his back after falling off a moped in Asia.
“Both actors are still filming with the show and will be on screen until the summer.”
