The average price of a pint is set to soar above £5 in a devastating shock for beer lovers.

The average price of a pint is set to soar above £5 in a devastating shock for beer lovers
And in many cities, the price for a pint can average around £6.
The British Beer and Pub Association said the average cost of a pint will rise from around £4.80 to £5.01.
The research, commissioned alongside Frontier Economics, showed pub firms are expecting to raise the average price of a pint by 21p.
The increase follows a series of cost increases announced in last October’s Budget, which will come into force next month.
Some brewers have already warned that they will need to push up prices to cope with the additional costs.
However, there are still places in the UK where you can get a pint without burning a hole in your pocket.
Drinkers looking for the cheapest pint in the UK have been urged to visit Derby, where the average pint is just £3.60.
And you can get a pint for just £4 in cities like Aberdeen, Leicester, Luton and Southend.
In Newcastle, the average pint is £4.90, and in Liverpool and Manchester, a beer will set you back a fiver, analysis by card payment solutions provider Takepayments found.
Jodie Wilkinson, of Takepayments, said: “The idea that northern cities are universally ‘cheap’ is being challenged, with places like Manchester now ranking among the least affordable.”
Edinburgh and Manchester were found to be two of the most expensive cities outside of London for eating out.
A three-course meal in these two cities will set you back £20 more than Nottingham’s average of £70.
The company is known for brewing beverages including Birra Moretti, Fosters and Tiger.
The company also increased the cost of its wholesale packaged products by an average of 2.5%.
Simon Dodd, chief executive of Young’s said the chain plans to increase its prices by between 2.5% and 3%.
Wetherspoons has also recently hiked the price of some of its drinks and meal deals by up to 30p after a warning from its boss Tim Martin.
Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, warned that the only way many pubs can stay open is to pass on the upcoming costs to consumers.
She said: “No one wants to see the cost of an average pint increase by a further 21p and break the £5 average pint barrier that will be required for pubs to maintain their punishingly slim profit margins.”
She added that it is “more urgent than ever” that the Government looks at ways to cap or reduce the cost of doing business so we can keep pubs open, preserve their community value and ensure the price of a pint remains affordable.
Breweries and pubs struggle
Pubs and breweries across the UK have struggled in recent years as the high cost of living has dented customers’ budgets.
The increased cost of brewing, beer prices and rising energybills have also had an impact.
Figures published by the Altus Group revealed more than 400 pubs across England and Wales were demolished or converted for other uses in the year to December.
As a result, the number of pubs across the two countries fell below 39,000 for the first time.
More than 34 pubs a month called last orders for the final time over the year – the sharpest fall in pub numbers since 2021 during the coronaviruspandemic.
How can I save money at Wetherspoons?
FREE refills - Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day.
Check a map – Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other.
So if you’re planning a pint at a Spoons, it’s worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you’re settling in at the cheapest.
Choose your day – Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights.
For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual.
Pick-up vouchers – Students can often pick up voucher books in their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled.
Get appy – The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table – but you don’t need to be in the pub to use it.
Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play.
Check the date – Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry.
It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14.
As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.

A MUM-of-four spread ant killer over her ex’s home and emptied bins on his driveway after they became embroiled in a road rage row.

Instead he accidentally hit her elbow against the wing mirror of his car during an angry confrontation.
Over a six-hour period Collier rang the victim 123 times to verbally abuse him.
At the same time, she and her new boyfriend Jake Scott, 29, took photographs of Mr McDarmaid’s house and sent them to him with messages threatening to “get his gaff”.
One message Collier sent read: ”You won’t ever try to run me over again.”
The victim’s Vauxhall Corsa car was trashed in a separate vandal attack.
The road rage incident occurred at 2.40pm on December 12 last year when Mr McDarmaid was taking his housemate to see their girlfriend.
Miss Megan Horner prosecuting said: ”While driving he saw his ex-partner Miss Collier and her new partner.
“Upon seeing Mr McDarmaid, the defendants began to shout abuse and call him a ‘gay boy’.
”At a set of traffic lights Miss Collier picked up a stick and waved it around as she walked into the road towards Mr McDarmaid’s vehicle.
“She hit the wing mirror with her elbow and Mr McDarmaid drove off.”
The court heard Collier texted Mr McDarmaid at 5.46pm saying: ”I didn’t realise our issue was deep enough to resort to you trying to take our lives with your dinger.”
Scott also sent various texts to Mr McDarmaid saying: ”Bro you know you’ve f***ed it now. Every gaff you’re known to go to is getting it.”
Mr McDarmaid came home at 8pm to find bins upturned on his driveway.
Collier and Scott turned up at the property again at 9.30pm to pour a yellow “petrol like” substance over the front door.
Police were called and they escorted the victim to a nearby street where his car was found with its windscreen smashed and two tyres pictured and the wing mirrors bent.
The cost of the damage was estimated at £600.
In a statement Mr McDarmaid said: ”This incident has made me fell like I am unable to sleep.
“It’s only happened because I’m not in a relationship with Miss Collier anymore.”
At Manchester Crown Court Collier, from Wythenshawe, admitted stalking and was sentenced to a two-year community order.
Scott, from Salford, admitted stalking, criminal damage and breaching a previous suspended prison sentence and was jailed for 12 months.
Both were banned from contacting Mr McDarmaid for three years under the terms of a restraining order.
In mitigation Collier claimed to suffer from mental health issues.
Judge Nicholas Dean KC told them: “You clearly have still quite a lot of growing up to do.”

A DAD who appeared on Channel 5 show The Accused has been jailed for murdering his daughter – 11 years after he violently shook her.
Kyle Kitchen, 37, attacked eight-week-old Primrose Kane on November 3, 2014, leaving her with severe brain damage.

Central NewsHe and partner Kenzey Kane appeared on show The Accused about the horror[/caption]
She tragically died six years after the horror on May 17, 2021, following years of living in constant agony.
Kitchen was charged with Primrose’s murder while already serving an 18-year sentence for assaulting her.
He has now been jailed for life with a minimum of 17 years after he was convicted of the charge following a trial.
Kitchen previously appeared on Channel 5documentary The Accused, which centred around Primrose Ivy’s mum, Kenzey Kane.
He was arrested for attacking her while she held Primrose in a row over the baby crying.
The Old Bailey heard the couple’s relationship was “frequently volatile”
Kane was previously jailed for causing or allowing serious injury to a child by failing to protect her daughter from Kitchen.
In November 2014, the killer dad either vigorously shook or hit Primrose Kane with a hard object when she was eight weeks old.
He called 111 to report that Primrose had gone “floppy” and would not wake up after making odd movements and sounds in the night.
Kitchen also claimed the baby had blood around her nose and was not breathing.
Primrose was rushed to hospital where medics found she had suffered serious brain injuries and a fractured skull that left her disabled.
When quizzed about the horror, mum Kane said: “It’s not like we knocked her or anything.”
Primrose’s quality of life was described as “very low” and a do-not-resuscitate order was implemented in 2016.
Following the attack, she was placed into the care of her maternal grandmother and went to a special school in London.
Although she suffered with cerebral palsy, feeding issues, an inability to communicate verbally and drug-resistant epilepsy, teachers described her as “characterful”.
On May 17, 2021, Primrose’s gran woke up to find the youngster’s normally noisy and laboured breathing had stopped.
A post mortem found her death was a result of the traumatic head injury inflicted on her as a baby.

TWO Scottish Green MSPs are plotting a joint ticket to oust one of their co-leaders, after Patrick Harvie announced he was stepping down.
Ross Greer, the party’s finance spokesman, and Gillian Mackay, the party’s business manager and who led the campaign to introduce so-called “buffer zones” around abortion clinics, are plotting a push to become co-leaders.
This is despite Lorna Slater, the party’s current co-leader, saying she intends to stand again for leader in the party’s leadership campaign this summer.
A Scottish Green insider said: “Ross and Gillian have a kind of agreement about running together”
It comes after the party’s veteran co-leader Patrick Harvie announced he will step down as leader after almost 17 years in the role – sparking the leadership battle within the party.
Ms Slater and Mr Harvie were elected as co-leaders in 2019, before becoming junior ministers after entering government with the SNP after the 2021 Holyrood election.
However the party was dumped by Humza Yousaf in April 2023 after Mr Harvie’s controversial comments about the Cass review which examined transgender healthcare for young people.
The decision eventually led to Mr Yousaf resigning as First Minister just days later as he faced defeat in a confidence vote.
In a statement on Wednesday morning, Mr Harvie announced he wanted to stay on as an MSP but not as leader.
He said: “It has been an extraordinary privilege to hold leadership roles in the Scottish Greens, first as Co-Convenor and then as part of our first ever Co-Leader team.
“The election of Co-Leaders in a pre-election year is an important moment for the party.
“I won’t be part of the leadership team that fronts up that campaign, but I’m optimistic to see the party choose the people who will do so, and to us building on our record results and delivering the largest possible group of Green MSPs in 2026.”
Any member can put themselves forward for the leadership under Scottish Green rules.
However insiders have said Mr Greer and Ms Mackay have been lining themselves up for the top jobs for months, given the likelihood Mr Harvie would step down from his long-held role.
The internal election will take place this summer, ahead of the Holyrood election in 2026.

GettyStephen Bunting is still searching for his first win in the competition[/caption]
It is Night 9 of the competition and it will take place outside the British isles for the first time this year.
And in another first, the action will kick off for UK viewers at 6pm.
That is an hour earlier than typically scheduled, with Premier League organisers looking to prevent a late finish as Germany is an hour ahead of the UK.
Sky Sports will broadcast the night’s play as always on their Main Event and Sky Sports+ channels.
A £10,000 jackpot is up for grabs with the winner of the night as well as five points, which could be crucial for players as they seek to qualify for the finals night next month.
Stephen Bunting is still looking to get off the mark after losing eight out of eight matches so far.
Following the 6-1 win over world No1 Humphries in last week’s final, the world champion said: “I think that goes to show how everyone does say I’m the best in the world at the minute.
“But you know me I’ll never really say I’m the best in the world.
“I but I’m performing better than these guys so maybe I should be saying I’m best in the world.
“For myself when I’m playing certain players I know when I’ve got them and it goes to show.
“Humphries shows a bit too much and as a player you’re like he’s at 60 or 41 and he’s not happy about it then his next throw he is the same score so you just have to pounce.”
