Grim map reveals Scotland’s break-in hotspots as locals blast ‘robbery epidemic’ rife with crime

JUST one in five housebreakings are being cracked in Scotland’s worst hotspot for the crime, we can reveal.

Last year saw Edinburgh emerge as the worst place in the country for burglaries, for the second year in a row.

Edinburgh is the worst place in Scotland for housebreakings[/caption]

Its 1,416 housebreakings in 2024 represented a rate of 27 crimes per 10,000 population.

Second worst of 32 council areas was Dundee, with 354 incidents meaning a rate of 23.7. Third was East Lothian, fourth Midlothian, and fifth Glasgow.

Official figures from the Scottish Government show Edinburgh and Dundee have been the worst two council areas in Scotland for the past five years.

And for 2023/24 – the latest available figures from the government – Edinburgh had the second-lowest clear-up rate in the country for housebreaking, with only 18.1 per cent of cases solved.

The details emerged after the chair of the Scottish Police Federation, David Threadgold, warned that a lack of investment in Police Scotland had led to large areas of the country becoming “policing deserts” with “an almost invisible policing presence”.

Last night, Scottish Conservative Lothian MSP Sue Webber said: “Brutal SNP cuts to police budgets mean they clearly cannot get a grip of this housebreaking epidemic in Edinburgh.

“That leaves many city residents at the mercy of offenders who know the police are simply unable to investigate every crime.”

And Scottish Labour justice spokeswoman Pauline McNeill added that housebreaking was “rife” in too many areas.

She said: “The SNP must show some leadership and support Police Scotland to tackle housebreaking and deal with this postcode lottery so that Scots can feel safe in their own homes.”

Edinburgh Western MSP and Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said: “This is a double blow for Edinburgh households. Large numbers of break ins and low clearance rates leave people feeling unsafe in their own homes.”

A total of 7,850 incidents were recorded in Scotland in 2024. But housebreaking reports have fallen nationally in the past decade, in line with wider crime trends.

Other factors behind the drop are thought to include better home security and a fall in price of electronic goods meaning rewards are no longer great enough for some to take the risk.

Top 5 Worst Areas for Housebreaking Rates

  1. City of Edinburgh (27.1)
  2. Dundee City (23.7)
  3. East Lothian (20.6)
  4. Midlothian (19)
  5. Glasgow City (17)

(Housebreaking rates in Scotland, 2024, per 10,000 population)

However, housebreaking rates vary widely across the country.

People living in rural and island areas appear least at risk. In 2024, the Western Isles recorded just five housebreakings, giving it the lowest rate in Scotland at 1.9 crimes per 10,000 people.

Shetland was second best with seven crimes, or three per 10,000 people. Orkney was third best with eight crimes, or a population rate of 3.6.

The housebreaking incidents included raids on homes, “non-dwellings” such as garages or sheds, and “other premises” like businesses.

Police Scotland yesterday said they had a specialist team tackling housebreaking in Edinburgh and claimed their detection rate had increased in the last year.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Mairs said: “We understand the impact that housebreaking has on victims and work is ongoing in both Edinburgh and Dundee to address this through local policing plans and by working with neighbouring divisions.

“Housebreaking is not just people’s homes, it can also be garages, sheds and commercial properties.

Top 5 Best Areas for Housebreaking Rates

  1. Na h-Eileanan Siar (1.9)
  2. Shetland Islands (3)
  3. Orkney Islands (3.6)
  4. Aberdeenshire (5.6)
  5. Moray (6.7)

(Housebreaking rates in Scotland, 2024, per 10,000 population)

“We have a dedicated team working in Edinburgh and the detection rates for these crimes, particularly in relation to people’s homes, has increased in the past year. The work ongoing in Tayside has resulted in the detection rate increasing to the highest it has been in five years.

“Information from the public, and their support in keeping communities safe has been a key contributor to this success. A close-knit community can be an effective deterrent against crime so get to know your neighbours and watch out for each other.

“We would also remind people to please be mindful of security. It’s crucial to keep valuables safe and out of sight. Stay vigilant and take small steps to enhance security and protect your property.

“Trust your instincts. If you see something suspicious, please report it to police.”

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “Although of little comfort to those affected, housebreaking has fallen by 74 per cent since 2006-07, with overall recorded crime at one of the lowest levels since 1974 and down 40% since 2006-07.

“Housebreaking is one of the priority areas of the Scottish Partnership Against Acquisitive Crime led by Police Scotland which aims to prevent, deter and ensure enforcement around this kind of crime.”

White Lotus fans horrified as incest obsession continues with Patrick Schwarzenegger’s Saxon and another sick fantasy

TV viewers were left reeling for another week after watching the latest episode of The White Lotus.

The Emmy-award winning, HBO drama aired its penultimate episode and yet again featured an eye-raising storyline about sex and fetishes, including incest.

This week’s shock scene came at a dinner party hosted by Gary (John Gries) and his much younger girlfriend, Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon).

Chloe sits with Saxon Ratliff (Patrick Schwarzenegger) at the party after in last week’s sleeping with his younger brother, Lochlan (Sam Nivola).

During the tryst, Saxon watched them and Lochlan also pleasured his brother.

As a means of smoothing things over with Gary, who learns of the romp, Chloe agrees to once again sleep with one of the brothers so that her boyfriend can watch them in the act.

She explains it ties into a fetish he developed after watching his parents have sex as a young child.

Chloe begs Saxon to sleep with her at the party so that Gary can walk in on them and catch them in the act and then she would “go off with Gary,” to have sex with him.

People watching at home reacted with strong feelings after the show featured an incest story for the second week running.

“You know this s**t getting messy af when saxon the only one in the whole episode that sounds sane,” wrote one person on X, formerly Twitter.

“Never thought there’d be a conversation where saxon was the voice of reason,” added another.

“This Gary/Greg plotline just outdid the insane sibling incest, did NOT see that coming. White Lotus writers sitting around just dreaming up ways to become more depraved, love it,” posted a third.

Viewers’ strong reactions to the latest episode comes after fans were left shocked by flashback scenes in last week’s instalment that showed Saxon and Lochlan kissing and engaging in sexual acts.

Following the sexual encounter, it was confirmed to viewers that both brothers had blacked out during the night.

Later on in the episode, Saxon found Chloe and Chelsea by the pool and said how kissing his brother was a ‘joke’ and that they both had made them do it.

Swiping back, Chloe declared: “I didn’t force him to perform a sex act on you.”

Meanwhile, Lochlan’s memory of the entire night eventually came flooding back to him whilst meditating in the Buddhist temple with his sister Piper.

The drama’s executive producer David Bernard previously defended the incest scenes.

Asked whether they went too far, he replied: “No, in terms of that — that’s all [creator Mike White].

“Mike is brilliant, and I think those big story turns are not just for shock.”

Bernard added to the New York Post: “There’s a specific reason in terms of the narrative storytelling, and the larger thematic idea Mike is trying to get across.

“As the season wraps up, you’ll see the purpose of that story turn.”

Incredible moment referee KOs losing coach with karate kick to the face after he tried to attack him with a bottle

THIS is the incredible moment a referee KO’s a furious member of a losing team’s coaching staff with a karate kick to the face during a Peruvian league match.

Luis Alegre let rip with his right boot as the man invaded the pitch and ran towards him with the apparent intention of assaulting him with a plastic bottle in his hand.

The coach immediately fell to the floor[/caption]

He connected with his rival’s head, putting him on the ground and sparking the intervention of the police.

Things then took a turn for the worse as the ref and his linesmen were surrounded by angry players looking for revenge.

The drama occurred in the 82nd minute of Sport Huaquilla’s Copa Peru match against Magdalena CEDEC in Ancash north of the of the Peruvian capital Lima.

TV footage showed it happened after Mr Alegre brought out a red card after one of his linesman appeared to point towards someone from the Magdalena bench.

The video showed the ballsy ref was no martial arts beginner – with his right boot connecting full-on with the jaw of the unnamed individual who rushed at him and went to hit him with his plastic water bottle.

Remarkably Luis managed to keep hold of the red card he was brandishing in his left hand despite his rapid reaction to the assault he was about to become a victim of.

The linesman nearest the action ran towards the pair before the karate kick in an apparent attempt to protect his colleague.

Although he ended up trying to calm tempers elsewhere on the pitch as the situation threatened to derail.

The man on the receiving end of the referee’s martial arts technique got up moments after being felled looking dazed.

And perhaps thankfully for his own safety was persuaded not to react by one of his own team’s players who put his arms around him and moved him away.

Match commentators responded by saying, when it was already too late: “Calm down lads, calm down” before adding as police intervened: “This sort of thing can’t happen.”

The game was suspended after the incident.

It was not immediately clear if the man kicked in the face had needed to be taken to hospital or whether he and the ref would face any disciplinary action.

Britain’s Got Talent child star reveals she’s engaged – sixteen years after performance that sparked Ofcom complaints

AN iconic former Britain’s Got Talent child star is all grown up – after getting engaged.

Hollie Steel won hearts when she broke down in tears during the BGT live shows in 2009 aged 10 – sparking a national debate about whether youngsters should be allowed to perform on the show.

Sixteen years on Hollie, now 26 and a pro-singer, has also won the heart of Daniil Kiryakov, with the pair set to tie the knot after sharing a string of loved-up proposal photos online.

Daniil popped the question last December, and Hollie shared engagement snaps including a close-up on her diamond ring.

Captioning the photos with a ring emoji, the star, from Burnley, Lancs., wrote: “I said yes! Can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives growing together.”

Daniil is an ice skater with cruise company Royal Caribbean International and hails from Pervouralski in Russia’s Sverdlovsk Oblast.

They couple have appeared in photos online together since 2023, when Daniil shared a pic of him and Hollie in a convertible, gushing: “Always happy when she is there.”

Fans have rushed to congratulate the singer on her upcoming nuptials. One wrote: “Congratulations Hollie! I have been watching you since you were a little girl and now this is a huge milestone!”

Another added: “You deserve all the love in the world.”

It comes more than a decade after Hollie’s infamous BGT performance in the third series of the ITV talent show – where she was tipped amongst favourites to win after wowing the judges with her vocals during auditions.

However, during the semi-finals the youngster suffered a panic attack and burst into tears onstage, leaving her unable to perform her rendition of Edelweiss.

The heart-wrenching moment sparked hundreds of Ofcom complaints over the immense pressure she was put under.

Judge Simon Cowell let Hollie perform at the end of the show, calling her “the bravest girl in the world.”

She went through to the finals and finished the competition in sixth place, with dance troupe Diversity winning the competition and Susan Boyle coming in second.

It was BGT’s most-watched series, attracting an average of 13.3million viewers – more than double the 5.5million who tuned in to watch the launch of the current series last month.

Speaking on Lorraine in 2019, Hollie explained why she was so emotional, telling how she had been nervous and didn’t have her mum backstage.

She also said that someone backstage told her: “There are 50 million people watching, don’t mess it up.”

The singer, who has since released three albums and starred in the West End, told The Sun in 2023 that she’d had therapy and had “trauma” after appearing on the show.

“When I get on stage, sometimes I go back to that moment when I’m on TV and I’m about to have a panic attack,” she said.

“I’ve done a lot of therapy and counselling where I’m just like, ‘You need to breathe, you need to relax. You’re enjoying this. You’re fine’.”
