I’m a Rangers fan but I’m GLAD I never played for the club – even though I wanted to

HE grew up dreaming of playing for the club.

But by the end of his career, he was GLAD he never turned out for Rangers.

Despite supporting the club as a boy, James McArthur admits it was a blessing in disguise that he never pulled on the famous royal blue.

Instead he enjoyed a fine career down in England after his meteoric breakthrough at Hamilton alongside fellow wonderkid James McCarthy (who of course DID turn out for his boyhood heroes Celtic at the end of his career).

McArthur won the FA Cup with Wigan Athletic (in the same team as McCarthy) in 2013 before joining Crystal Palace where he racked up almost 250 Premier League appearances before retiring in 2023.

He was also a Scotland squad regular for much of the 2010s, winning 34 caps before announcing a somewhat surprising retirement from international football not longer after turning 31.

The midfielder was linked with Rangers whilst at Hamilton and again during various points of his career down south, including when he was coming to the end of his nine-year stint at Selhurst Park.

But in an interview with PLZ, he revealed that for the sake of his family he is relieved he never played for the Light Blues.

He also believes it wouldn’t have been the right time if he joined Gers at the end of his career, with injuries taking their toll and potentially leading to him being labelled a failure,

Asked if he had wanted to play for the Ibrox club, McArthur said: “Obviously as a fan, yes.

“But as a family man, probably not.

“I love the way I can walk down the street and not get bothered.

“I love that my kids aren’t Rangers and Celtic players’ kids, like ‘That’s his, that’s his!’ My kids are who they are.

“Probably earlier on, I would have liked to have played for them but not at the end because I couldn’t move anymore.

“As a fan, you don’t want to go somewhere where you know you can’t succeed with your body, with getting injured and you then become probably a failure in a lot of people’s eyes.

“I’m happy with the way my career turned out and I wouldn’t change it.”

Watch the moment fuming John Bishop calls security to kick ‘aggressive’ audience member out of show – and gets cheered

FURIOUS John Bishop confronted a couple at his comedy show over alleged ‘aggressive’ behaviour before ordering security to kick a woman out.

The comedian was forced to act after the man and woman in the front row reportedly talked throughout his set continuously.

The 58-year-old made his feelings known by consistently asking them to stop speaking.

According to other audience members, the comedian eventually requested that they leave the theatre.

The man is said to have gestured towards Bishop in an aggressive manner before he was grabbed by security and escorted out.

Comic Bishop was heard telling them: “They all have as much right as you do to enjoy the show.”

He then waved at the woman before security escorted her out and said: “See you then.”

The room applauded the comedian while jeering at the woman leaving the gig, as reported by NeedToKnow.

The incident took place at the Princess Theatre in Torquay during Bishop’s Back At It tour last Thursday.

An onlooker said: “John warned a couple on the front row several times for the show to stop speaking.

“After the interval they continued doing so and then John told them he wanted them to leave.”

They claimed: “The man then stood up and gestured towards John as if he was going to jump on stage.

“Security got to him in time, grabbed him by the cuff of his shirt and then slammed him through two fire doors.

“My video only recorded the aftermath in which he then wanted this man’s wife thrown out of the building and slightly later two of their friends were also thrown out.”

Members of the public applauded the comedian for his actions.

George Rose said: “I’m not a fan of John Bishop’s comedy, but he comes across as a decent bloke.”

Gerry said: “There’s always one.”

Another added: “Good lad John for putting them in their place, you are brilliant.”

One stated: “Well done John.”

Another said: “Why do people do this?”

The Princess Theatre has been approached for comment.

It is the latest in a string of high profile ejections at comedy gigs.

So far this year both Peter Kay and Jimmy Carr kicked disruptive audience members out of their shows.

The much-loved takeaway operates out of multiple locations in Donegal and Sligo, providing food to locals for years and has established itself as one of the best in the North West.

On their official Facebook page, the team shared the devastating news, putting it down to a number of factors.

The team wrote last week: “We are sad to announce the closing our Donegal Town branch tomorrow Thursday the 27th March 2025.

“There are a few reasons for closing the branch, mainly the restructuring of the business.

“We would like to thank all of our loyal customers who have been an absolute pleasure to serve and so many of whom have become great friends to us.

“We have been so lucky to have had amazing staff right from the beginning and our current crew who we appreciate and who we wish all the best for the future, especially Paul Delaney who has been with us for 27 years.

“All our other branches Letterkenny, Buncrana and Sligo will be open to serve you and we hope to see you again.

“Thank you to Donegal Town for 33 wonderful years.”

Also taking to the social media platform, Donegal Online shared a photo of the staff, announcing their closure.

The staff can be seen smiling as they stand outside the takeaway on Quay Street in the town.

LONG HISTORY

In the caption of the post, it said: “After 33 years in business, the Four Lanterns Restaurant & Takeaway, Donegal Town is closing tomorrow (Thursday, March 27).”

The business is now permanently closed.

The post continued: “It opened in Sept ’91 and has provided employment to hundreds of local people in that time, not least its longest serving employee of 23 years; Paul Delaney.

But all hope is not lost, as they revealed: “The Sligo, Buncrana & Letterkenny outlets will remain open.

“The Grimes family pioneered fast food in Ireland 54 years ago when it opened its first store in 1971 in John St. Sligo.”

And last Thursday as the business was closing, the Donegal Town Four Lanterns team took to their own Facebook page to say goodbye.

First they shared a post saying: “We’d just like to thank all of our customers over the many years for their custom, loyalty and memories from all of the staff in Donegal Town, Four Lanterns.

“*LAST ORDERS TODAY* from 13:00-21:00, we are open for our final day.”

‘A PLEASURE’

They later wrote: “33 years and out. Thank you, it was a pleasure.”

Devastated locals shared their heartbreak in the comments sections of each of the posts, reacting to the news.

One person said: “When booked a weekend in Donegal town, the lanterns was a massive part of it, a few times in the same day I am sure a decision not taken lightly. Thanks for all the Big Fours”.

Another local said: “Really sorry to hear this in our house. It will definitely be missed.

“Had planned to get the kids one last order when I heard the news but the queue was out the door and down the street! Looked more like Saturday nights of old than a Wednesday tea time.”

‘ICONIC’

Someone else commented: “Sorry to hear this! Another great business that will be missed”.

Another said: “Really sorry to hear this.. End of an era”.

Someone else said: “Sad to hear any place closing. Especially somewhere as iconic as the four lanterns. It’s very beloved in Donegal.”

Another wrote: “A big loss to Donegal town and the most amazing and friendly staff ever. Best of luck to everyone in the future”.
