‘Every day there was a bomb’ – Sean Dyche breaks silence on Everton exit and reveals what he said to David Moyes

SEAN DYCHE insists he left Everton “in good shape” for David Moyes.

The 53-year-old was sacked in January with the Toffees sitting 16th in the Premier League and a point clear of relegation.

Dyche succeeded Frank Lampard in January 2023 and guided them from the relegation zone to safety with a final day win over Bournemouth.

The ex-Burnley boss then guided them to a 15th-place finish last season despite an eight-point deduction for breaching Premier League financial rules.

Speaking to Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football podcast, Dyche said: “The kind of things thrown at me – and other managers by the way – I couldn’t manage a big club.

“Well, what about a big club in crisis? Because that’s what I had to do.

“You get in there and you go, ‘What on earth?’ It was like every day there was another bomb going off.”

Dyche said he had no idea about the upcoming PSR breaches but suspected Goodison chiefs “knew a bit more”.

He said: “We went in there, and we’re thinking, ‘Goodness me, this is all over the place.’

“And that’s not questioning any other managers. Everyone has their own style of what they want to do. I’m not on about that.

“I’m on about the fans don’t want the owner there, they don’t want the chairman there, they don’t want a legend, Sharpie [Graeme Sharp], there, they don’t want the chief exec there.

“They’re not allowed to come to the games because they’re getting all kinds of threats.

“Then the crowd is against the team because the team have not been doing well. and then the negativity, the cloud around [the club] was huge.

“So without even worrying about winning your first game, you’re going, ‘Hang on a minute, I’ve got to somehow calm this a little bit and bring alignment.

“I always say there’s a truth line in a club, and this truth line was miles off! It was miles off the truth. And I thought, ‘Hang on, someone hasn’t been telling these fans what the reality is.”

Off-field issues were eased when the Friedkin Group completed their £400m takeover in December and weeks later David Moyes returned to Goodison as Dyche’s replacement.

Everton points deduction

EVERTON have become the first Premier League team to be deducted points for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations for profit and sustainability.

The Toffees’ ten-point hit comes after an independent Commission determined Everton recorded losses of £124.5million as per Premier League regulation calculations over the three years up to 2021-22 – exceeding the permitted £105m limit.

The Goodison Park club have posted financial deficits for five years in a row.

Manchester City are fighting 115 charges of FFP breaches put forward by the Premier League last season.

Only two clubs in Premier League history have been docked points.

Middlesbrough saw three points deducted in 1996-97 for failing to fulfil a fixture against Blackburn.

In March 2010, Portsmouth had nine points stripped for entering administration.

Both Middlesbrough and Portsmouth were relegated following their respective points punishments.

The ten-point deduction drops Everton to 19th in the Premier League table, level on four points with bottom-club Burnley.

The Scot has guided them 17 points clear of the relegation zone ahead of this summer’s move to the Everton Stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

On Moyes, Dyche said: “He’s someone I admire as well.

“I think his career, he’s taken some nods, but I think overall he’s been brilliant.

“I spoke to him in the process of the changeover and I assured him, I said: ‘Moysey, they’re in good shape mate.’

“But the weight of it’s got too much and they’re dwindling. A new face, a new voice, a new feel, a new change, whatever you need to change.”

And he also hit back at his critics, adding: “The one thing I stand by, if you remember me leaving when I put my statement out, I did put they’re in good shape and I got battered for it.”

Facing cancer twice left me terrified, but I found hope by speaking out, says Dublin woman

A WOMAN has told how she was left “terrified” after facing cancer for the second time.

Ruth O’Sullivan, from Dublin, was originally diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer in 2014 after finding a small lump.

Then in 2023 she found out that she had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer

She went through chemotherapy and radiotherapy twice

After going through chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the 55-year-old was deemed cancer-free in 2015.

She was physically doing well, but had to get over the toll the treatment took on her mental health.

Speaking to the Irish Sun, she explained: “It took a long time to get over that and start feeling safe again, because it was always on my mind that it would come back.

“It took at least about five or six years to stop thinking every little thing was the cancer coming back.

“I didn’t do well mentally after that at all. I went into medical menopause so that was going on in the background but this is 10 years ago now so at the time there wasn’t as much information about menopause and the effects that it could have.

“Mentally, I didn’t do well at all. I was highly anxious — terrified, really — all the time during and after treatment.

“I felt very unsafe, my foundations had been stripped away.

“It’s just so important to look after your mental health as well as your physical health because a lot of the times, especially when you’re finished treatment, people will say ‘that’s fantastic you’re through the treatment’ and it’s absolutely brilliant but there’s also that sense of ‘what the hell just happened’, and that uncertainty of ‘where do I go now?’ Then that fear that it will come back.

“I’d be a strong advocate for people looking after their mental health and using any services that they can, for example the counseling services that the Irish Cancer Society provides and their helpline – there is help out there.”

But then in 2023, she got the horrifying news for a second time.

Ruth started noticing a bad pain in her hip and back – but thought it was sciatica as she had suffered from chronic back pain since she was a teenager.

She began attending physiotherapy and doing exercises, but the intensity of the pain led to an MRI.

‘Quite a shock’

And a visit to the doctor confirmed her worst fears – she had cancer again.

Ruth said: “I went for an MRI and they discovered a very large mass, which turned out to be a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer.

“It’s a completely different cancer from the first one, so that was quite a shock.

“I had just gotten to the point where I started feeling safe again and then I was just knocked back.”

During her journey with cancer the second time around, she turned to The Daffodil Centre for support, leaning on their volunteers to process the “whirlwind” of information she was receiving.

She explained: “It was really great to have that facility, to be able to chat and try to start making sense of all the information that I was getting.

“I felt that as professionals they understood what was going on and where I was coming from – that was really important that I had that available to me.”

Ruth said her family were also in shock at her second diagnosis.

She said: “My family were shocked, of course; they just couldn’t believe that this was happening again with a different cancer.

“My dad said ‘there’s four kids and what are the chances of one of the kids getting cancer twice?’”.

Due to the size, placement, and the fact that the tumour had woven into her bones and even ended up breaking her pelvic bone, it was inoperable — meaning she had to go through chemotherapy and radiotherapy again.

Ruth is now cancer-free but continues to be closely monitored, and wants to encourage people that there is hope after a recurrence, or second round of cancer.

‘Don’t lose hope’

She said: “One of the important things was that support and being able to talk about it, hearing other people’s stories of people thriving and surviving even after multiple cancers or recurrences.

“On the Irish Cancer Society website, they have stories of people’s experiences, which have been really helpful to know that there is hope.

“The treatments have progressed and come a long way and the research is constantly bringing up new options.

“I would say don’t lose hope and talk, if it helps you feel better to talk about it.”

Ruth wants to get across the importance of the public helping the Irish Cancer Society, who receive just five per cent from the Government – the rest are from fundraisers and Daffodil Day.

Frankie Dettori could land £6MILLION winner on first big rides since filing for ’embarrassing’ bankruptcy

FRANKIE DETTORI could land a £6MILLION winner on his big first rides since filing for his ’embarrassing’ bankruptcy.

The world’s most famous jockey will be in action at the star-studded Dubai World Cup night in Meydan on Saturday, April 5 – the same day Britain comes to a standstill for the Grand National.

On a massive day of racing across the world, Dettori will be aiming to put his name back in the news for all the right reasons.

Earlier this month, during Cheltenham Festival, Dettori, 54, announced he was filing for bankruptcy amid a long-running battle with HMRC over tax avoidance.

The shamed star, who left Britain for the US at the end of 2023, said: “For the last six-months, my advisors have been working with HMRC in an attempt to find a solution to my financial situation.

“Regretfully, I will be filing for bankruptcy.

“I am saddened and embarrassed by this outcome and would advise others to take a stronger rein over their financial matters.

“Bankruptcy is a major decision and its consequences will affect me for many years.

“I am relieved to be drawing a line on this long-term matter, which enables me to reset and focus on my international riding career.”

However, he could be in line for a whopping pay day if successful in Dubai.

Jockeys generally get around ten per cent of winnings in a race and Dettori will ride the favourite, Raging Torrent, in the Group 2 Godolphin Mile.

American handler Doug O’Neill is going for back-to-back victories in the dirt contest and victory last year with Two Rivers Over landed him and connections just shy of £500,000.

Dettori, who has won that race seven times, is also booked to ride 40-1 outsider Mixto in the Group 1 feature later on the same day.

The Italian has won the World Cup a record-equalling four times, most recently with Country Grammer in 2022.

He looks to have his work cut out on O’Neill’s other runner, but, should the miracle strike then they can expect a cheque of around £5.5m – one of the biggest for any race all year.

O’Neill said: “Having Frankie in the saddle, arguably one of the best of all time, is a great asset.”

Dettori, who is estimated to have made around £20m from his legendary career in the saddle, will be desperate to put his bankruptcy woes behind him with some high-profile winners.

His financial situation became public knowledge last December when his plea for anonymity was rejected by a High Court judge.

The case was brought against dad-of-five Dettori by his former tax advisors, who he had employed to oversee his and his family’s financial affairs.

The jockey ended the relations last year and employed a different set of financial experts in an attempt to resolve the case.
