Six budget-friendly tips to make your Mothers’ Day flowers last longer

MOTHERS’ DAY may be over, but your beautiful bouquet doesn’t have to wilt away just yet, or be binned.

Extend its life with these easy, budget-friendly tips . . .

SUDS SAVER: Always wash your vase with hot, soapy water before arranging the flowers.

Leftover residue speeds up decay, so a clean vase means longer-lasting blooms.

To keep them fresh, try to change the water every couple of days or when it starts to look a bit cloudy.

WATER GOOD IDEA: Trim stems while submerged in a bowl of water, to prevent air bubbles from blocking their later absorption of water.

You should always try to cut the stems at an angle, as this creates more surface area for better hydration — the key to keeping flowers at their best.

LEAF IT OUT: Remove any leaves on the stems that will sit below the waterline in the vase.

If left on, they can quickly rot, which not only smells bad but means the blooms will fade and die faster.

POSY PICK-ME-UP: Add a spoonful of sugar to the water, to encourage your flowers to flourish.

A splash of white vinegar can also help keep water fresh.

CHILL OUT: Refrigerating flowers is one way to keep them lasting longer but a more practical option is to keep them away from direct sunlight and heat.

A cool hallway or side table works perfectly and should keep blooms fresher for longer than if they are on a warm kitchen surface.

PRESS PAUSE: Don’t throw away wilted flowers. Instead, air-dry them by hanging them upside down in a dark, dry space such as a cupboard, then use later as table decorations.

Or, if you’re feeling creative, press your flowers.

FRENCH SAND (5.30 Wolverhampton, nap)

Archie Watson’s three-year-old looked a nice prospect when finishing second on debut here 16 days ago. She showed lots of pace and had to be switched around rivals to make her challenge which wasn’t ideal. She stayed on well to the line and should have learned plenty from the experience.

HORN CAPE (4.00 Newcastle, nb)

All his best form has come at Gosforth Park where he has three hurdles wins on his CV. He came back to his best when third here last time and the handicapper has left his mark alone. He sees out an extended two miles strongly around here so the longer trip shouldn’t be a major problem.

ROADSHOW (3.15 Wincanton, treble)

An interesting hurdles newcomer for Paul Nicholls. He was a winner on the level in France where he held his own at Listed level when trained by Andre Fabre. Current connections forked around £60,000 and he can repay a chunk of that in what looks a modest contest.

LA DOLCE DOLLY (4.15 Wincanton)

Is worth a place in the Lucky 15. She relished moving up to this sort of trip when winning at Plumpton three weeks ago. A 4lb rise in the weights gives her every chance of following up.

Future of Alan Carr’s hit BBC show revealed after five series and hosting shake up

THE fate of a popular Alan Carr show has been revealed after airing five series.

Interior Design Masters, has been hosted by the comedian since 2021 and it has now been revealed that the show has been handed TWO more series.

Producers of the hit BBC programme have handed the show a seventh and eighth series.

A sixth is already filmed and ready to go with it expected to premiere on April 10th on BBC One at 8pm.

It means fans have plenty of Interior Design Masters action still to come.

Producers are now on the hunt for 10 budding designers who are hoping they have what it takes to bag the show’s top prize.

The BBC have confirmed that filming will take place in Summer this year.

For this year’s series, participants have the chance to win the opportunity to collaborate with John Lewis for their very own collection of homeware.

Speaking about being handed a huge run of episodes for the show, Alan said: “To get your show recommissioned is always a lovely thing but to get it recommissioned twice is really special.

“And it’s such a wonderful feeling to know that Interior Design Masters will, for the next two years, be keeping the UK entertained and also inspired.

“I feel the show goes from strength to strength and whether Interior Design Masters makes you giggle on the settee or propels you up a stepladder with a drill in hand to give your room some much needed TLC, we hope we put a smile on your face.”

One of the show’s judges, Michelle Ogundehin, added: “An abundance of reasons to celebrate! I could not be more pleased that Interior Design Masters will be coming back for two more series.

“This new partnership promises an incredible opportunity to our series 6 winner. I cannot wait to see their designs in stores across the UK!”

Alan began hosting the format in 2021.

Before that, the first series, which aired in 2019, was presented by Fearne Cotton.

Toxic influencer Andrew Tate blamed for alarming rise in young men choking partners during sex

TOXIC influencer Andrew Tate is being blamed for an alarming rise in young men choking partners during sex.

The trend is most common in those aged 16 to 34 — with 35 per cent of females reporting being throttled during consensual sex, a government-funded study found.

Tate often promotes the idea of male dominance and sexual control online.

A recent survey by the government-funded charity the Institute For Addressing Strangulation, found that strangling is most common in the 16-34 age group, with 35 per cent responding that they had been choked by a partner during consensual sex.

Non-fatal strangulation (NFS) was made a specific offence in 2022, and can lead to a five year prison sentence.

In the year up to 2023, around 700 offenders were sentenced for the offence.

Michael Conroy, from anti-misogyny training firm Men At Work, said: “The rise in choking comes from porn and I see Tate as part of the porn world. He is part of porn world. He is the idea of porn made flesh.

“There’s a visual grammar of heterosexual porn, which is that you – the man – are dominant, you are the controller, you are the one who tells them what to do. You are at the top and she is at the bottom. And then Andrew Tate says it and reinforces it.

“He is responsible for fuelling the fire of sexual violence by putting that feeling in their stomach. And he refuses to acknowledge accountability and responsibility and that is attractive.”

Harriet Smailes, research officer at Institute for Addressing Strangulation, a Home Office funded group that carried out the research on the rise, said the practice was being turbocharged by online culture, where porn, influencers, and viral content are reshaping sexual expectations.

She said: “Online culture plays a huge role in normalising certain behaviours, and strangulation is now showing up as just another part of the expected sexual script.

“It’s not just porn anymore – it’s TikTok trends, memes, influencers and music lyrics. And there is a really strong message that this is a violent act, predominantly done by men to women.

“And when used in a non-consensual sexual environment, it’s almost entirely done by men to women. This is an incredibly gendered act.”

Tate was approached for a comment.
