Nursery school & residents EVACUATED as road closed and cops probe security alert in busy town amid ‘stay away’ warning

A NURSERY school in Co Down has been evacuated due to an ongoing security alert this afternoon.

The nursery school, which is located in the Church Street area of Dromore, is closed as specialist police officers examine two objects that were found nearby.

Several police cars have been spotted at the scene of the incident.

It is understood that a number of residents in the area have also been evacuated.

Police urged the public to “stay away” from the area while the examination is underway, with the road currently closed in both directions.

It is understood that officers escorted some young children out of The Old Station Nursery building, which is located inside the security cordon, earlier today after they arrived on scene.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Church Street in Dromore, Co Down is currently closed in both directions due to a security alert in the area. Cordons are in place and the public are advised to avoid the area.”

Stormont’s deputy First Minister and Lagan Valley MLA Emma Little-Pengelly confirmed she has been in contact with police about the ongoing incident.

She said: “We have been in contact with the PSNI and have been advised that two cylindrical objects were found at A1 Recovery, the yard beside The Old Station Nursery and as a precaution the area has been cordoned off and evacuated until a special unit examines the objects.

“The police advise that there is no risk to the public but ask that people stay away from the area until confirmation that it is safe to return, hopefully later this afternoon.”

Alliance Party Lagan River councillor Jessica Johnston urged the public to “avoid the area” and give the PSNI space to carry out their duties.

She added: “Trust parents and children are all safe. Their safety is paramount at this time.”
