But he stayed behind bars while family members gathered for the service in Elgin, Moray.

An insider said: “Everyone expected Nat to be there.

“But his permission was revoked at the last minute and he wasn’t allowed to go.

“His family were disappointed because it would have meant a lot to have him there. But there was nothing they could do.”

Nat, 66, was locked up for killing wife Arlene, who disappeared 27 years ago this month.

She was last seen waving their son Jamie and daughter Natalie, then ten and five, off to school.

One of the biggest missing person probes ever seen in Scotland then turned into a gigantic murder investigation as suspicion fell on fruit and veg salesman Nat.

He’s twice been convicted of murdering Arlene, 33, and it’s claimed he paid a hitman £15,000 to avoid paying her £250,000 in a bitter divorce.

Nat’s kids were taken in by Ibby after their dad was locked up, but it’s thought they have always backed their dad and believe he’s innocent.

We told how Nat moaned to a pal about how much he missed his mum’s broth while he was behind bars.

She was described as a “much-loved mam, mother-in-law, granny, and great-granny”.

Natalie was one of the first family members to turn up for the service at William Watson’s Funeral Directors.

She was eventually joined by Nat’s sister Lynne and other relatives and they headed inside together. It’s understood none of Arlene’s relatives attended.

After the service that lasted about half an hour the family went off for a private cremation.

Nat was last seen in public in 2012, during the trial when he was convicted of murdering Arlene for the second time.

He’s serving his sentence at Addiewell private nick in West Lothian and won’t be considered for release for at least another five years.

A spokeswoman for Sodexo, which runs the jail, refused to comment.
