‘I would not let you into my kitchen’ – RTE Home Of The Year judge left divided over Covid revamp home

RTE’S HOME Of The Year judges have been divided over a Covid revamp home on tonight’s episode.

The RTE series that showcases Ireland‘s most jaw-dropping houses made its return to the small screen last month.

The Kildare home made it through to the final

Looking for individuality, functionality and clever design, HOTY judges Hugh Wallace, Amanda Bone and newcomer Siobhan Lam each score the homes out of 10.

The home with the highest combined score in each programme immediately goes through to the final, where the winner is crowned.

Next up, the judges found themselves in Kildare where Vivian and Philip lived with their three dogs.

During the height of the Covid pandemic, Vivian and Philip moved into a completely empty shell of a house with no kitchen, flooring, or even a functional bathroom.

After eight long months their redesign began, with the couple having worked hard on design plans and the layout, completely changing the internal function of the house.

Vivian and Philip went for a contemporary mid-century style, creating a cohesive yet visually stimulating aesthetic throughout the house

Although the build was time-consuming for the couple, it was all worth it, as they created the show stopping home they had always envisioned.

Upon entering the homes living room, Siobhan said: “Oh wow this is beautiful. This room is perfectly put together very ordered and very gentle and restrained palette.”

Once they walked into the kitchen area, she then added: “Oo yummy. This is more like it! Yes! This feels luxurious.”

However, fellow judge Amanda did not make the same impression.

Amanda remarked: “For me it’s too busy, busy, busy, it has introduced an element of glitzy and that element of calmness in the home is now gone.”

Siobhan immediately sarcastically responded: “Oh my God, I would never let you into my kitchen I tell you that if you think that this is busy?!”

Hugh agreed with Siobhan claiming that the kitchen was “to die for.”

Also on the show this evening, the judges headed to an old stone-built farmhouse in Cork.

‘ALL TOO MUCH’

Couple Joan and Richard Bradburn are surrounded by animals and the sea in the quaint home, with their children all having left for college.

The pair bought this house in 2006 and it is estimated to originally date from the mid-19th century.

They rebuilt the “damp and dilapidated” home using only traditional materials and methods, with natural or recycled materials.

The family described the style they went for as being “period, natural, rustic and organic” as they wanted to be sympathetic to the farmhouse building and heritage of the property and its surroundings.

Upon arrival to the house, Amanda remarked: “There’s just too much heaviness, it’s all timber, timber, timber.

Siobhan agreed: “Yes I would have done a more contemporary revamp.”

Hugh said: “Absolutely not. They say there is too much timber? Ridiculous give me more timber. This is super.”

In the end, when it came to voting the Kildare home ran-away with the votes as it scored a whopping 26, making it through to the final.
