WILLIE MULLINS and Bryony Frost sparked a dramatic Grand National jockey storm – that left Paul Nicholls scrambling desperately for a rider.
Trailblazing jockey Frost had been booked to ride Nicholls’ 100-1 outsider Stay Away Fay in the £1m contest this Saturday.
But she sent him a text saying she had to stay in France, where she is retained rider for top owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede.
That led to Nicholls quickly snapping up the services of Jonathan Burke, with the legendary Ditcheat handler saying he was ‘delighted’ to land him.
But that soon turned to dust when Burke got a call offering him the ride on Willie Mullins’ big chance Minella Cocooner.
The 16-1 runner is a former bet365 Gold Cup winner who was a close third in last season’s Irish Grand National.
A confirmed stayer and ‘spectacular’ jumper, Burke admitted he couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
But the knock-on effect of that was to leave Nicholls without a jockey yet again.
And he finally had to call on the services of Paul O’Brien, who rides for up-and-coming trainer and former Nicholls assistant Harry Derham.
Jocking off storms are usually seen on the Flat but it’s all kicked off ahead of Thursday’s final declarations.
Explaining how it came about, Burke told the Nick Luck Daily podcast: “I didn’t have a ride in the race and everything looked closed off.
“But in the space of six hours yesterday it all just turned out.
“Paul called me and said the ride on Stay Away Fay was a goer, which I was delighted about because getting a ride in the race less than a week out is massive.
“I was racing yesterday but my agent messaged me saying there was a problem.
“I rang him and he said David Casey, Willie Mullins’ assistant had called up offering me the ride on Minella Cocooner.
“Faced with a dilemma but Minella Cocooner has the better chance.
“It’s not what I wanted to do and not how I would have wanted it to go.
“I’m sorry to Paul and Paul’s owners but also grateful he offered me the ride.
“But Minella Cocooner has the stronger chance… it’s not the way I wanted it to happen but it’s the way it has.”
The jockey merry-go-round also means it’s guesswork who rides Mullins horses in the National.
Paul Townend will be on I Am Maximus while Willie’s son Patrick says he wants to ride Nick Rockett.
Danny Mullins had been expected to be on Minella Cocooner but it looks like he could now ride Meetingofthewaters.
With Burke on Minella Cocooner and Brian Hayes on Grangeclare West that could possibly leave Appreciate It without a rider.

MOLLY-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury were all smiles as they headed for a pub lunch with adorable daughter Bambi.
The Love Island duo dressed down in comfy sportswear for their sunshine date, yet their happy expressions told everything about their reunion joy.
Tommy, 25, popped his head into the passenger side of Molly-Mae‘s £193K G Wagon car as he helped pick up some bits before they headed inside the rural Cheshire eatery.
The pair were seen giggling before the boxer scooped up their two-year-old tot and headed inside.
Maebe brand founder Molly-Mae, also 25, was close behind, pairing a black tracksuit with a leather jacket and sunglasses as she strolled up to the eatery.
Their outing came after the little family enjoyed a visit to the Lowry theatre in Salford.
They arrived at the eatery in separate cars for the secret Mother’s Day meet-up.
It came shortly before Tommy posted a gushing tribute to Molly-Mae following their secret reunion.
The former Love Island stars split up last summer due to Tommy’s “problem with drinking”.
The message – for Mother’s Day – was the first time he has posted about his former fiancé since their break-up.
It comes after The Sun revealed Molly-Mae is no longer hiding their reunion.
She broke her silence on their relationship last week after she posted an update following her Dubai holiday.
She said of the couple – who did not publicly state they were travelling together but who were seen at the airport: “We’re just figuring things out.”
Continuing, Molly-Mae shared: “We had a really really amazing time, probably the best holiday ever for all of us.
“It’s not that I’m hiding it, I’m not quite ready to talk about it.
She added: “It’s also private, but also it’s not really private.
MOLLY-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury are on holiday in Dubai after splitting in August. Yet have they dropped clues about their reunion before?
Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury appear to have confirmed their romance is back on with a joint holiday to Dubai.
Yet in January, the rumour mill had already started turning on their reunion after pics of Molly-Mae’s NYE snog with the boxer resurfaced
In February, Tommy, 25, then gushed how “life has been looking up” after the pair’s romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day.
The Sun exclusively revealed how the pair were spotted “canoodling” on their cute getaway.
During the same month, Tommy was also spotted leaving Molly-Mae’s Molly Maison home in his G Wagon in the early hours.
Fans then spotted clues the pair had spent another romantic weekend together earlier this spring.
Molly-Mae was also heard discussing having a second baby on her vlog, in yet another potential sign they are giving their romance another go.
“When you have a relationship in the public eye, trying to rebuild that relationship or work on that relationship or see if you have something worth saving…
“You can’t figure things out the way a normal relationship would.
“You can’t do the normal things a coupe trying to work on their relationship normally do.”
After sharing a New Year’s Eve kiss, the pair then headed off on a loved-up trip for Valentine’s Day in February, prior to their Dubai getaway.
It was revealed earlier this week that the pair are considering moving back in together.
A source previously told The Sun why Molly-Mae isn’t hiding their reunion and said: “In her mind they’re back together and back in love.
“She doesn’t care who knows, it’s like they’re in the honeymoon period all over again.”
It comes as The Sun revealed her fiercely protective sister, Zoe Hague, has been waving red flags, refusing to forgive or forget how things played out last the last time.
“They think this is a terrible idea and that it will end in tears again,” the source said.
“For them, it’s not a case of if it implodes – it’s when.”
