Drunk cop found slumped over wheel of police car while on duty after downing almost whole bottle of gin

A DRUNK cop was found slumped over the wheel of her police car while on duty after downing almost an entire bottle of gin.

PC Lauren Payne was found to be nearly four times the legal drink-drive limit by a colleague while she was parked in a service station.

The 27-year-old, who was in uniform, stunk of alcohol and had a near-empty bottle of gin in her bag, Reading Magistrates’ Court was told.

Payne sobbed as she avoided prison today after pleading guilty to drink driving whilst on duty.

She was instead handed a ten week sentence, suspended for one year, after the judge heard becoming a police officer was her dream job.

The court was told Payne had been sent to work from Aldershot Police Station in Hampshire due to staff shortages on January 17.

At around 3.30pm, she was released from her duties and informed her line manager she was on her way back to her usual area of Andover to finish her day.

But the force control room was concerned after receiving “inaudible communications” from Payne.

Colleagues went to Popham Services where they found the cop slumped over the wheel of her patrol car at 4.30pm – 30 minutes before her shift was due to end.

PC Claire Chivers, who investigated the incident, said officers initially believed Payne had suffered a “medical episode” but then smelt alcohol.

When she was breathalysed, Payne had 137 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath and she was arrested.

The court heard worked as a police staff investigator outside Southampton Central for four years until July 2024 when she became a police constable.

Charlotte Branfield, defending, said she had been involved in a car crash seven days before the incident.

She claimed Payne had suffered an extreme stress reaction and made the “fateful decision to open the bottle of gin and drink it”.

Ms Branfield added: “This is a very sad case of a young woman who has long suffered from mental health issues.

“It was a dream, in her words, to become a police officer, formed during her struggles as a teenager.

“She wanted to help people who were vulnerable and she felt the police force was the most effective way of doing that.”

Payne was sacked from Hampshire Police following a misconduct hearing.

She was placed on the College of Policing’s Barred List for five years and has lost her driving licence.

District Judge Samuel Goozee accepted Payne was suffering from alcohol dependence and a deterioration in her mental health.

He ordered her to complete up to 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days, 150 hours of unpaid community work and an alcohol monitoring requirement for 120 days.

The judge said: “At the time of the offence you were endeavouring to access community-based support.

“You have made focused steps to address your alcohol dependency since you were arrested for this offence.”

Terrifying moment cop is battered by thug in 50-second blitz of punches and kicks leaving him with broken bones

THIS is the terrifying moment a cop was battered by a thug in a 50-second blitz of punches and kicks leaving him with broken bones.

PC Nathan Attwell was on his usual response shift in Torfaen, Wales, when Richard Nodwell, 37, launched a frenzied attack on him.

Today Nodwell was sentenced to six years and four months imprisonment[/caption]

Nathan was responding to a report of a disturbance in Cwmbran on December 20 when he saw Richard.

He approached him and after speaking briefly Nodwell started to repeatedly punch and kick the police constable.

The attack lasted 50 seconds and left Nathan with a fractured eye socket, broken cheek bone and broken nose.

Nodwell ran after the assault leaving Nathan on the floor injured.

Officers quickly found Nodwell hiding nearby and he further assaulted two police officers – spitting at one and biting the other.

Nodwell was immediately arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker.

He was later charged for these offences and plead guilty at Cardiff Crown Court on January 20.

Today he was sentenced to six years and four months imprisonment with an extended license of three years.

Nathan said: “When you join the police service, there’s a stigma that sometimes you’ve got to put up with abuse, whether that be shouting, swearing, spitting, or kicking.

“However, no one goes to work to be assaulted, especially when they are just trying to help someone.

“The night of the assault I was afraid to go to sleep in case I didn’t wake up.

“Why is it, that people like Nodwell feel it’s ok to assault police officers and expect no consequences for doing so?”

Chief Constable Mark Hobrough said: “I would like to commend Nathan for bravely speaking out about this awful attack which has significantly affected him, his family, the wider community, and all of us at Gwent Police.

“Our officers, Nathan included, are more than their uniform – they are members of our community, they are parents, siblings, and friends, who love and are loved.

“They come to work to make a difference and will be there during your time of need.

“Just like you wouldn’t expect to be assaulted while carrying out your job, they shouldn’t either.”

THE HISTORY OF ALDI

The German discount supermarket chain came to Ireland in 1999.

Aldi’s first few shops opened in November 1999, with locations in Sandyford, Dublin, and Ballincollig, Cork.

By the mid-2000s, Aldi bosses had opened numerous stores, focusing on providing high-quality products at low prices.

As the recession hit 2008-2012, Aldi’s popularity grew as consumers became more price-conscious.

The supermarket giant continued it’s expansion in Ireland between 2013-2018, while refurbishing existing stores.

By 2018, Aldi had over 130 shops throughout the country.

The chain began to focus on expanding its range of Irish-made products and supporting local producers.

In 2023, Aldi had over 140 stores in Ireland.

The store invested in sustainability initiatives, such as reducing plastic packaging and increasing the availability of organic and eco-friendly products.

Aldi chiefs said: “At Aldi we are committed to supporting Irish suppliers. Developed in partnership with Bord Bia, Grow with Aldi is designed to help the very best Irish suppliers develop their brand.

Tributes have poured in for tragic Aoife Shelly[/caption]

Aoife, who is survived by her mum Claire, dad Joe and brother Eoghan, was a student at the University of Limerick.

And she was a talented GAA footballer who played for the Moyne Templetuohy ladies junior side.

Aoife had helped the club to win the county Junior A title last year.

She also played a major part in U14 and U16 county teams and was part of various county development squads over the years.

Her death notice online reads: “To the inexpressible grief of her heartbroken mother Claire, dad Joe, brother Eoghan.

“Grandparents Tom, Anne Hassett and Eileen, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and a very large circle of friends.

“May Aoife rest in peace.”

The young footballer was a “proud member” of the wider Tipperary LGFA community and is being remembered as a “cherished teammate”.

Taking to Facebook, her club said: “It is with immense sorrow and heartbreak that we share the devastating news of the passing of Aoife Shelly, a shining star of Moyne Templetuohy Ladies Football Club, who left us far too soon at just 22 years of age.

“Aoife wasn’t just a talented footballer — she was a cherished teammate, a loyal friend, and a proud member of the wider Tipperary LGFA community.

‘CHERISHED TEAMMATE’

“Her passion, kindness, and radiant spirit lit up every pitch she stepped onto. Number 15 on the field, but number 1 in the hearts of so many.”

The club added: “Aoife’s success at club level can be measured a lot more than by all the medals she won with Moyne Templetuohy over the years. If she wasn’t playing in a game, she was always present at games, encouraging her clubmates.

“This loss cuts deeply through our clubs, schools, families, and communities. As we try to come to terms with the pain, we hold Aoife’s family, teammates, coaches, and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.

‘DIFFICULT TIME’

“No words will ever be enough, but we hope the love and support of the community brings even a small measure of comfort in this incredibly difficult time.”

The sudden loss of Aoife has sent shockwaves through the local community, with emotional tributes pouring in from friends, neighbours and acquaintances online.

One said: “We express our deepest sympathies to Claire, Joe and Eoghan at this awful time, also to grandparents Tom, Anne and Eileen and to all the extended Shelly and Hassett family.

“Our condolences to all Aoife’s friends and we are especially thinking of all her teammates in Moyne Templetuohy LGFA and Templemore Camogie Club.

‘FABULOUS YOUNG LADY’

“Aoife was such a fabulous young lady and her smile will last forever in our hearts and minds.”

Another person wrote: “My sincere sympathies to Claire, Joe, Eoghan and the extended family of Aoife.

“[She] was a darling of a person full of determination and ambition on the many sports she played to have known her to have met her was a privilege a smile that brought sunshine even on a rainy day.”

A third said: “Aoife was a very special person and a pleasure to speak to in Guilfoyle’s shop.

‘TERRIBLE TIME’

“We hope that the wonderful memories that you all have created with Aoife in her short life will help you to get through this terrible time.”

Aoife will be reposing in Grey’s Funeral Home Templemore on Wednesday from 3pm to 7pm.

Her funeral mass is due to be held at 12 noon on Thursday at Church Clonakenny.

Andrew’s ex cruelly ‘bets’ his ‘dying’ sex accuser Virginia Giuffre will ‘still be alive’ after heartless ‘karma’ jibe

PRINCE Andrew’s ex has sparked outrage after cruelly taunting Virginia Giuffre – by betting the sex abuse accuser won’t die from her injuries after a horror bus crash.

Lady Victoria Hervey doubled down on her brutal claim that the Epstein trafficking victim – who says she has just four days to live – is faking it, calling her a “fantasist” and suggesting it’s all unravelling.

The 48-year-old socialite, who briefly dated the disgraced Duke of York in 1999, caused fury online after re-posting a hospital photo of Virginia with the word “karma” slapped across it.

The post was backed by the glam rock anthem The Final Countdown.

But instead of apologising for the cruel jab, Hervey doubled down, saying: “Virginia Giuffre is a fantasist. It’s been a long drawn out process these last few years, but it’s unravelling.

“Her lies are being exposed. Let’s see in three days, but I bet she will still be alive,” she told the Daily Mail.

It comes after mum-of-three Virginia posted a bruised selfie from her hospital bed on Instagram.

She claimed to be dying from kidney failure after a “tin can” car wreck involving a school bus in Western Australia.

The Epstein survivor wrote: “This year has been the worst start to a new year… they’ve given me four days to live.

“I’m ready to go, just not until I see my babies one last time.”

The 41-year-old claimed the bus hit her car at 110km/h, adding: “No matter what your car is made of it might as well be a tin can.”

But cops cast serious doubt on the crash in Neergabby, north of Perth – confirming it was “minor” with no injuries reported.

According to police, a 71-year-old woman was behind the wheel of the car, and a 41-year-old woman in the passenger seat.

Damage to Virginia’s car is estimated at around $2,000 and the crash wasn’t reported until the following day by the bus driver.

A rep for Andrew’s accuser insisted she is seriously ill, saying:

“Virginia has been in a serious accident and is receiving medical care in the hospital. She greatly appreciates the support and well wishes people are sending.”

Her former lawyer Brad Edwards added: “We’re hoping for better news in the coming days.”

But Lady Victoria showed no remorse for her reposted “Karma” dig, insisting: “I re-posted the Karma (post) because I felt, well you know, she deserves it. But I also knew in my head that she was lying.”

She continued to stoke the fire, suggesting Giuffre’s estranged husband Robert – who now has custody of their three children – “knows the truth” and should speak out.

“If Virginia Giuffre really does have days to live, then a complete confession is needed,” she posted.

“I don’t believe it though, the FBI are on her right now and arrest warrants are coming. She’s conveniently dying to evade jail.”

Virginia and Robert, a martial arts instructor, split recently after 22 years of marriage.

She now claims to be estranged from her children.
